w interedition january 2 0 1 0 news views a quarterly publication of saint joseph school martinsburg wv 5th grade collects blankets martinsburg during the long winter months many people often take for granted the fact that they have a warm bed to fall into each night ultimately forgetting that many other less fortunate members of their community do not live in such comfortable conditions students at st joseph s parish school are making it their mission to assist those who don t have a cozy place in which to sleep on a nightly basis and they are collecting warm items such as blankets and sleeping bags to distribute to the area s homeless fifth-grade teacher sylvia montgomery explained that the collection program is part of a service project for st joseph s school in conjunction with st bernadette catholic community in hedgesville where she attends church continued pg 4 shelter box assists with haiti earthquake relief come one come all to hear the great news saint joseph school has collected $1207.79 for shelterbox we continue to collect funds to help this super organization right now the volunteers are in haiti over 1,100 boxes have been distributed already and more are arriving daily shelterbox was also able to set up a field hospital for victims of the devastating earthquake while our goal term has been met please consider this with $500 shelterbox can provide teaching materials to start a temporary school for children after a disaster this is called a teacherbox and it contains enough materials for 50 students and a teacher how wonderful it would be if our additional funds could supply the children of haiti with a way to take those first steps back to a normal childhood so keep your donations coming super job saint joseph s school family![close]

news views st joseph school dividends for life in our parish jan 30 31 catholic schools week 2010 a student from saint joseph school will be speaking at each of the weekend masses time for hospitality and fellowship will be provided in lackey hall at saint joseph church after each liturgy all students who attend weekend mass are asked to wear his/her uniform to represent saint joseph school dividends for life in our community feb 1 open house from 9:00 a.m to 11:00 a.m for parents grandparents parishioners community members alumni and prospective families homemade cookies will be delivered to service agencies in our community police fire ambulance pre-kindergarten through 2nd grade will be preparing placemats for meals on wheels dividends for life in our faculty staff volunteers feb 2 employee luncheon in lackey hall sponsored by the school family association teachers receive hour off appreciation ticket great wall of thanks from employees to volunteers for assistance dividends for life in our vocations feb 3 all school liturgy at 9:15 a.m in gymnasium tribute to frank grimes students will assemble in the shape of a cross and recite the hail mary grades 3-5 will make valentine s cards for those who have heeded the call dividends for life in our nation feb 4 red white and blue tag day for all students faculty no charge letters will be written to troops by grades 6-8 goodie packages will be created and mailed to troops dividends for life in our students $1 tag day to benefit the shelter box project 8th grade vs faculty/staff volleyball game at 1:15 p.m all students will receive a treat during lunch time feb 5 2[close]

news views st joseph school technology integration in addition to the new mac mobile lab and neo boards that were introduced this year our students and faculty have been busy working with new technology in their classrooms classroom responders as part of our friday afternoon middle school electives mrs fitzpatrick and mr edwards have been working with students to create science reviews and other interactive activities to use with our primary and intermediate grades once the students in this elective have created their lesson they are scheduled to go to a class and facilitate the lesson with the students mimio interactive projectors mrs dowell miss yeager along with seven other teachers at least one from each grade level pk-8 will be receiving the mimio interactive a hardware device which makes the classroom whiteboard interactive this enables the teacher and students to utilize software programs and the internet right from the board rather than standing at the computer there are also a number of great features built in to the mimio software such as flashcards world maps and tools for taking notes and saving online documents with comments made right on the board prayer partners work together to test minerals students in third and sixth grade worked together in the science lab a few weeks ago testing the hardness and streak of minerals mrs crim even shared the students how opal glows under a black light and how sulphur burns 3[close]

news views 5th grade collects blankets continued from pg 1 the program kicked off monday and will conclude at the end of this month the 28 students participating in the project are from the fifth-grade classes of montgomery and teacher karen ball as well as a few students from the school s fourth grade class i thought of the idea through my church where there is a gentleman jeff mccoy who works with the homeless in the panhandle she said he has been going out several nights a week in the area to distribute blankets and sleeping bags to those who need them men women and small children are all using these items she explained that she and the students are collecting slightly-used blankets sheets of any size and older sleeping bags a group of women from st bernadette will help sew the blankets together to be made into sleeping bags i threw the idea out to the children and after just a few days they ve already dumped off bags and bags of items we ve got more coming in and we even have a local attorney s firm in town that offered to donate money toward this project montgomery said she said many students from her fifth-grade class have been shocked to hear that even in these frigid conditions the streets are sometimes the only option for a homeless individual to settle in for the night those who would like to donate can drop items off during school hours at st joseph s parish school or at st bernadette from 10 a.m to 1 p.m monday through friday the school is located at 110 e stephen st in martinsburg and the church is located at 109 w main st in hedgesville more information about the project is available by calling st joseph s parish school at 304 267-6447 the kids are really excited about this they ve done different service projects before and it s important that they can actually give back themselves and see what service really is helping out is not always about sticking your hand in your pocket for money montgomery said -story from january 8 2010 reprinted with permission from martinsburg journal erienne greene story writer 4 st joseph school school family association sfa crop our next sfa crop is scheduled for friday february 5th in the cafeteria if you or someone you know would like to register please print the registration form from sycamore or the school website save the date sfa tubing fundraiser white tail thursday feb 11 4:00-10:00 p.m more information will be posted on sycamore school carnival saturday may 8th committees will be forming soon check your email and sycamore for how you can become involved spaghetti dinner 2nd quarter awards assembly tuesday feb 2 5:30 p.m sjs cafeteria order form available on sycamore all orders must be placed by friday january 29th.[close]
