tuesday february 22 2011 beach metro news 3 community council gives go ahead to kingston road development by phil lameira councillor mary-margaret mcmahon did her utmost to get councillors to vote to oppose a proposed development at 580/592 kingston rd but in the end by a vote of 6-5 community council agreed to let the development proceed however to get final approval the developer must meet 43 conditions laid out by the city some of which deal with water issues and ravine protection the feb 16 toronto/east york community council meeting lasted a very long time to allow councillors to question city planners the city solicitor and residents deputations by local residents clearly indicated that the only thing that will have satisfied them is a total halt to the proposed development a six storey 47 unit apartment building with underground parking fronting onto kingston road the biggest issue according to residents many who live on glen davis crescent behind the project is that the ravine backing onto the development will be largely destroyed other concerns include the obstruction of sunlight and potential flooding due to water runoff ward 22 councillor josh matlow was very vocal in arguing that the city should not send its solicitor to the omb to argue against the residents association but should oppose the development matlow said that the city is powerless in making decisions regarding developments and will continue to be until the omb is abolished from toronto mcmahon asked councillors to oppose the development but many were torn stating that it was a very difficult decision to make councillor janet davis believes that approving the development with the 43 conditions to be met would better help the residents cause six of the councillors voted against mcmahon s motion while five voted for after the vote residents reacted with disappointment this will now set a precedent on how ravines are dealt with said martin gladstone all ravines in the city will be in jeopardy rein raamat of the friends of glen davis ravine said that the community will not give up and plan to challenge the decision at the omb he indicated that local residents will retain their own lawyer and planner to fight the development plans this is a broken planning process and residents should not suffer from such said raamat the residents also spoke highly of mcmahon saying that she has been very supportive and that she understands their issues and concerns a omb pre-hearing has been scheduled for march 21 your music store in the beach takamine~ovation~washburn~hamer new plans for offshore wind farms stating that there isn t sufficient scientific research to support such developments at this time offshore wind in freshwater lakes is early in development and there are no projects operating in north america said john wilkinson minister of the environment an anemometer was installed last spring off the scarborough bluffs to determine whether or not there is enough wind to generate power by building a wind farm the proposal to install a wind farm in lake ontario has stirred a lot of opposition from local residents and organisations wind concerns ontario has been very active since its inception in october 2008 in trying to put an end to the liberal s wind energy plans besides raising awareness and promoting their position on offshore wind energy wco is also calling for a halt to all wind farms claiming that over 100 people are suffering from various health affects such as sleep deprivation and headaches toronto wind action s sherri lange said with sadness at this time of encouragement we also think of our rural communities across the province who have been thrust into turbine hell adding that they will not rest until complete restitution is made we see this as a major victory said john laforet president of wco the province recognizes that the government has acted without science here the minister of natural resources linda jeffrey said that we need to base any future decisions on the best available scientific data the ontario government plans on working with its us counterparts in conducting more research they will also be monitoring the lake vanern pilot project in sweden and learn from its scientific findings another pilot project has been proposed in ohio some were also disappointed with the ontario government s announcement this is an unfortunate decision that surrenders the province s leadership role in exploring the potential for offshore wind energy in the great lakes said robert hornung president of canadian wind energy association a national non-profit association beaches-east york mpp michael prue finds the decision absolutely bizarre arguing that the announcement is simply a political move and that the pressure is on to hold on to key ridings such as kingston and the islands and scarborough-rouge river why did they push the project for two years if there wasn t enough scientific research phone fellow swimmers told her there had been a similar robbery the week before a few days later she went to a party and found out that it had happened again she learned from a supervisor at the centre that there had been more than 10 similar robberies in the women s change room and thefts had been reported at other city pools this woman is annoyed she feels that the centre s staff were aware of a problem and should have taken preventive action sooner why didn t they warn patrons to take their possessions onto the pool deck she asked according to a city hall spokesperson birchmount staff are now increasing patrols of the area and encouraging users to leave their valuables at home and take their bags on to the pool deck everyone has to check in with the receptionist and get a ticket ·06 feb 22.11 2/17/11 4:31 pm page 1 6 beach metro news february 22 2011 in my opinion board trying to find options to improve schools there is a proposal before the toronto district school board tdsb to put tv screens in the hallways of high schools the screens would carry news and information that the school would like the kids to have access to much like the screens in the subway stations not a complicated issue on the surface what is difficult is that the company that is willing to provide the screens and the service wished also to include advertising in the package at this time the proposal allows only `nice advertising milk marketing board public service announcements and such the problem is that it is a conduit however seemingly benign directly into our schools for commercial enterprises there are those who believe that we are appropriately vigilant on our students part to keep `bad advertising out of our schools they also believe that this is the only way to provide the screens and soft and hard ware necessary for this new and attractive technology sheila cary-meagher trustee toronto district school board not so some schools have figured how to do this on their own and have no advertising of any sort except student events these are also schools with either a really clever parent/teacher/student collective and/or the money time and support to make this happen not all schools have such assets but with a little seed money and the right encouragement from the board they too could build their own in house `tv network so i am writing about the proposal to both let you know what is happening and to give you a chance express your opinion my plan is to create a small fund for each high school that wishes to participate and not be disadvantaged by being a school without means we can then encourage student creativity and initiative by re moving the obstacle of poverty · last year the ministry of education created a pilot solar energy project on the roofs of nine schools in the tdsb the instillations are smallish at kew beach school the project is only 20 kw when the roof would hold 64kw a group of folks in that area have taken the issue and have run with it on feb 17 they met to establish a community co-op to provide the additional 44kw s of solar panels on the school roof and to harvest the income for the use of the school the members of the co-op can buy green bonds which will provide the money to buy the panels we are working on many fronts to have these bonds be eligible as resp investments what a coup this would be a community investing in their local school to create green energy and to also be an education fund for their children s college or university education it is only in its infancy but if this comes to pass it will be a wonderfully creative commu nity initiative with winners all round · here s another fantastic though tiny discovery google translate there is a process by which you can submit any document to google translate and it will convert it into any language you wish how amazing is that and now for the bad news in october the friday before the election i was served with papers that charged me with conflict of interest i was of course shaken who wouldn t be somebody was suing me in the municipal act there is a clause that prevents elected representatives from engaging in any activity that would result in a pecuniary advantage for a relative or that representative that is as it should be but what quite often happens is that this is interpreted so widely that it becomes impossible to be an elected person who has relatives who works for any gov ernmental body i have a child who is a teacher as such i absent myself from any discussion on teacher negotiations i cannot and do not vote on teacher contracts our board is very careful about perceived conflicts of any sort when a trustee has declared he/she perceives her/him self to be in a conflict position all discussion stops until that person has left the room i love my kid but i think it would be an insult to her to imply that the only way she could get or keep a job was through her mother s interference she is way too talented and intelligent and proud to need me to get or keep a job how wildly stupid would i have to be to do anything to open myself up to being sued to endanger my job that i dearly love to embarrass and insult my child to break the law to do that just to vote on issues that cannot help my child in any meaningful way it boggles my mind would you do it nor would i beach metro community news published by ward writing to offer my thanks to an anonymous dog walker who performed a brave act of kindness that left me speechless and may have saved my own dog s life i took my dog olive down to the beach for a run in the leash-free area on the morning of saturday feb 5 we entered the leash-free area just south of the snow fence near the leuty lifeguard station although i knew that the storm from the week before had created glacier like ice mounds near the water s edge i did not imagine the sheer drops down to the water along the back of the glacial `berms i also did not realize that the ice rose so high above the water that in many places the only way to get from the water back onto land would involve an ice pick or ladder due to my own ignorance of these dangers i did not stop olive as she moved in the direction of the water s edge olive is usually a timid cautious dog who is familiar with the beach perhaps because of this familiarity with her surroundings she charged toward the water at full speed likely hoping to lap up water or wade in with her front paws by the time she realized that the water was four feet below the ice cliff she had charged upon it was too late she slid down the back of the mound of ice at the water s edge and disappeared from sight in the moments before olive s disappearance over the edge my daughter emma and i had been talking with a couple who had two of their own dogs with them as we were talking this man noticed that olive seemed to have gone over the edge and he and the woman he was with walked toward the edge with my daughter and i to see if we could see olive together we peered over the edge and saw olive several feet down on a small island of ice she was hunched low down and afraid water was on all sides of the chunk of ice she was resting on i immediately lay down on the ice cliff which olive had slipped off i tried to reach down to her but was not even close to being able to grasp her at this point the man with whom i had been speaking said i m going to go down and get her he slowly lowered himself over the ice wall but had a really hard time stabilizing himself on the glacial outcropping below the woman he was with was not sure that what he was doing was safe and i was also worried the man reassured us i m o.k i might fall in but the water is shallow and i would be able to stand over there and pointed to the left the woman and i both laid down and extended our arms out to where the man was rescuing olive we did the best we could to hang onto him but when it came down to reach down and get olive we could not reach him with a swift movement the man reached down grabbed olive and handed and her up to the woman who handed her to my daughter the woman and i pulled and did our best to help the man cont d on page 15

s clothes get even with their owners during the summer various items of apparel such as shirts cotton trousers and light socks slip uncomplainingly onto their proper locations aboard their owner s body it is a different ball game in the winter and guys ignore this at their peril because there is a parallel that can be drawn between a man s overcoat for example and the womenfolk in his life a man s winter suit just like his sweetie does not like to be taken for granted and this vexation is shown in a variety of ways i take you now to the living room of a rising young executive who is on his way to an interview for a job he has coveted for years the initial stages of getting dressed such as the donning of trousers and so forth have passed without untoward incidents and now he is trying on his suit jacket at this point the garment in question which has been seething with unrest because it spends most of its time locked up in a dark closet next to an oilskin fishing jacket that reeks of halibut decides that enough is enough and it is time to exact revenge suddenly the coat s left sleeve which heretofore had behaved faithfully locks itself into some kind of knot and rendered itself impenetra ble sensing a distraction the right sleeve wraps itself around its owner s neck and slowly begins strangling him to death eventually things get sorted out but when the applicant arrives at the interview site he learns the coveted position had been awarded to the owner s nephew an indolent ne er-dowell who failed kindergarten three years in a row but who graduated with honours shortly after granddad purchased the school system there is a moral to this story but i don t know what it is and needless to say i would appreciate any input but now on to other matters i cannot speak for the rest of you but this winter has put me in an introspective mood and it has left me somewhat remorseful perhaps getting it out in the open will help me deal with this so here goes i am deeply sorry i threw that rock through my neighbour s garage door window even though i still believe i didn t do it my father held a different opinion and as a direct result of his conviction i bore strap marks on my hands for at least two hours i also deeply rue dipping virginia mcdowell s pigtails in my inkwell when she occupied the seat in front of me in our grade two class to this day i vigorously dispute the charge because i can prove that on the day in question i was in the principal s office bring pummelled for taking a bite out of eddie johnston s lunch apple a charge that i dispute to this day the worst part of all this soul-baring is that my misdemeanors did not end with my days as a well-meaning but somewhat misguided youth i still blush with shame when i recall the evening i closed the front door to dad s car on the ballgown my date was wearing the night we went out to our very first formal dance my date berated me non-stop as the evening dragged on then i got another earful from her father when he saw the bedraggled appearance of her gown when i took her home he launched into a truly impressive tirade directed at me pausing only long enough to ask me if i knew how much he paid for her dress things didn t get any better when i arrived back home either dad spotted a huge dent in the front door on the passenger s side and that dent puzzled me too for a long time i only found out years later it was caused by a lead weight my date had sewn into the hem of her grown for use in case i got any fresh ideas on the way home my feelings of remorse over all my past actions haunt me to this day and i can only say if there were frequent flyer points for guilt trips i could fly around the world for free be careful playing and walking near ice the beach is always a fun place to go and play or just to go for a walk however there are dangers that visitors and beach users must be made aware of the toronto beaches dog association is warning beach goers about the dangers of ice formations along the eastern beaches these formations are dangerous said chris yaccato chair of the toronto beaches dog association what happens is that ice forms to create what looks like a safe extension of an ice shelf attached to the beach but below those formations water in the form of waves carves out a type of cavern thereby weakening the formation if you step on that ice formation it could break and you can fall into the water while the toronto beaches dog association encourages people to visit the beach they strongly urge visitors and beach users to use caution when walking along the waters edge here are a few safety tips to consider 1 never allow children to wander out onto the ice formations 2 stay well beyond the ice formations 3 the warmer the weather the more dangerous these formations are 4 keep your dog well away from the ice formations use the off leash dog parks instead of the beach itself 5 just use common sense.

drinking time and then declines this is the case for all wine regardless of varietal or style all wine will keep for a bit however not every varietal or wine style is meant to age or will improve over time some wines are meant to be enjoyed over the short term because of their structure they are not generally longlived these are pretty much at their peak when made and are often fruit-driven with lighter body once this exuberant freshness is gone the wine simply tastes tired white varietals like sauvignon blanc gewurztraminer muscat pinot blanc pinot grigio muscadet muller-thurgau semillon seyval blanc vidal verdicchio trebbiano and riesling generally fall into this category reds that don t seem to age well are gamay dolcetto grignolino and malbec of course there are exceptions with some of these riesling especially in sweeter versions and the pinot gris incarnation of pinot grigio actually age pretty decently bigger sturdier structured wines usually last longer because they have more stuffing white varietals like viognier chenin blanc and some chardonnay especially burgundy have some staying power reds particularly with some tannic grip such as cabernet sauvignon cabernet franc carmenere cinsault grenache mourvedre nebbiolo pino edward finstein a.k.a the wine doctor wine writer educator judge consultant 416-261-0855 winedoctor@sympatico.ca www.winedoctor.ca the world s and zinfandel will all usually pass the test of time even within the realm of these reds sometimes certain styles are created to drink sooner and really won t last as long what is needed for a wine to age is reasonable fruit and alcohol a balance between the fruit sweetness and acid sourness and for red wine some tannin most of the bigger wines will improve with age over time components will harmonize hard edges will round out flavours will evolve and in reds tannins will soften speaking of tannins one must be very careful to ensure that there is enough fruit in a big red to counterbalance the tannins while aging if a firm young red wine is laid down over time to soften the hard tannins and there is not enough fruit to outlive those tannins the fruit could be gone before the tannins are soft making it taste like shoe leather regardless of whether a wine is meant anne-louise kelly decorating den interiors 289 200-2985 www.decdens.com/akelly gift certificates are always available private and corporate tastings available upon request for drinking now or over the long term it must be stored properly whenever you read tasting notes about how long a wine will keep or age it is always based on ideal storage conditions temperature should be approximately 55ºf or about 13ºc humidity especially for bottles with natural cork stoppers should be around 75 this keeps the part of the cork facing the world moist so it doesn t dry out the space should be vibration-free so don t stash your wine around busy noisy high-traffic areas keep your wines in the dark they re light sensitive that s why most wine bottles are made of darkcoloured glass if your wines have natural cork closures don t store them next to aging salami cleaning solutions chemicals paints or other ambient smells these closures are porous and eventually those aromatics will permeate it and get into the wine all naturally corked wines should be laid down horizontally as well so the cork side within the bottle stays in constant contact with the wine preventing it from drying out finally since whites are more delicate they should be stored closer to the ground as it s always slightly cooler at ground level even in the best of cellars keep in mind that anything above or below these conditions could speed up slow down or even alter the maturation and evolution of your wine copies of the doc s book ask the wine doctor are available at the bmn office for $24.99 each.

416-726-5729 musically enriching lives in the beach since 1994 ur dog stanley is no special dog he s not smarter or cuter or more lovable than any of your dogs but he may be more cartoon-like he has the good looks of snoopy the heart of the little dog in the grinch who stole christmas and is as dumb as they come with that classic cartoon nemesis the cat unlike your dog my dog very very rarely barks ask anyone in the four years we ve had him in our family he s barked on only a dozen occasions or so and most really called for barking he s sort of a barking minimalist the quiet type he observes yappy barky dogs with a sort of confused disdain being an english springer spaniel i imagine him with a british accent looking at other noisy dogs thinking is that barking really necessary couldn t you get what you want from your owner with a simple yet firm nose-nudge the second summer we had him he was a rambunctious but still silent year-old dog i was enjoying a rare afternoon nap at the cottage when loud barking woke me who the heck has a dog on our island i thought and was stunned to see over the edge of the hammock my own dog barking for the first time and i mean really barking loudly deeply fiercely at something just over the rise of a hill nearby hackles raised body on full alert the dog owner in me knew something was really different about stanley s behaviour i must admit that based on his tough-guy reaction i was prepared for something big and dangerous to be over that hill i crested the hill and looked across the small ravine toward my neighbour s cottage to find the source of stanley s defcon five alert to me a bear a moose no it was a cat it was a simple sweet-looking little tabby cat who faced stanley from about 60 feet away and appeared completely unperturbed by the noisy fuss my dog was making stanley ran an agitated circle around me growling deep in his throat i d never seen him look or sound well so doglike i had a moment of awe and dogowner pride it was like the moment when you look over at the teenager that used to be your baby and realize he s taller than you wears shoes bigger than his father s and has the voice of lou rawls you think where the heck did that come from i calmed him and said go see which meant he could stop protecting my life from this fluffy killer and go explore this new object in his year-old life he o cartoon dog vs devil cat cat-1 dog-0 christine yerrill bounded down our side of the ravine and raced up the other directly at the cat stopping just a dozen feet from him stubby tail wagging stanley thought he d found an island playmate it was as he was crossing the ravine that i took a closer look at the tabby there was something a bit different about his face and i squinted to see exactly what it was the cat s face was scarred and he was missing an eye he was the toughest looking little fluffy tabby i d ever seen i had a sudden flood of apprehension that this moment wasn t going to be as friendly as stanley hoped the cat casually licked a paw and stanley watched and bounced a little circle trying to engage this new creature in play the cat keeping his one mad eye on stanley body deceptively relaxed casually licked the other paw i opened my mouth to call stanley back to me but it was too late stanley took one more playful bounce toward this fluffy assassin and the cat exploded mad eye tabby went into full-hissing-spitting-spinning-circles-furflying-claws-extended-attack moving directly toward my excited and stunned dog luckily he instinctively backed up a foot or two so the swipe of razor-sharp paws missed his face but the shock ricocheted through his naïve body the cat had transformed into a whirling dervish of tasmanian devil-like sounds and psychotic motion and stanley made for the first time in his young dog life the right choice he did an abrupt about-face and ran tail between his legs yelping at the top of his voice back across the ravine and up the hill to me at the speed of a runaway train he didn t stop until he was directly behind me only then peeking out from between my legs shaking from head to toe to try and understand what just happened hearing the dog yelping my sons came running thinking the dog was injured they arrived to see the cat once again completely composed peacefully licking his paws sitting serenely in the sun stanley looked desperately from the boys to the cat his eyes beseeching them saying really you have no idea that cat is not sweet he is the devil he nearly killed me but the boys disdain was obvious they couldn t believe their dog who was supposed to be tough and protective was scared of a tiny little fluffy cat stanley has never lived it down when we nap now at the cottage stanley takes the high ground lying on our deck in the sun with a clear view across that ravine toward the neighbour s place and he sleeps with one eye open just like in the cartoons ross many talents benefited community cont d from page 4 details most common health risk factors is chronic stress in my practice i see many patients who are undergoing long-term or intense stress either physical mental emotional or chemical this stress can come from having high-pressure jobs family/relationship difficulties financial pressures chronic infections/allergies or sensitivities to the environment stress can come in many different forms and every person has their own way of coping with it however the effects of these longterm stresses can often lead to a condition called adrenal fatigue adrenal fatigue occurs when the adrenal glands glands which sit on top of our kidneys do not function at their optimal level normally they are responsible for producing over 50 different hormones and when they are underfunctioning their ability to produce these hormones is hindered if you are experiencing symptoms such as cravings for salt extreme fatigue burnt-out feeling difficulty waking up mild depression decreased libido pms symptoms or difficulty coping with stress you may be suffering from adrenal fatigue approximately 80 of us have experienced adrenal fatigue at some point in our lives but it is often overlooked/undiagnosed what are the causes of adrenal fatigue one of the major causes of adrenal fatigue is chronic stress however factors such as poor dietary habits exposure to toxins allergies infections pharmaceutical drugs lack of sleep smoking and lack of exercise or coping techniques can exacerbate the problem since these things tend to add even more stress on the body it is important that we try to avoid these things when we are trying to heal the adrenal glands jennifer chen bsc nd doctor of naturopathic medicine optimal health naturopathic wellness clinic 500 sheppard ave e suite 307 416 222-heal 4325 www.optihealthnaturopathic.com jchen@optihealthnaturopathic.com how can we assess adrenal function although signs and symptoms can give a good indication as to whether or not someone may be suffering from adrenal fatigue there are objective tests that can also be used to diagnose this problem the most common and reliable naturopathic tests to assess adrenal function are saliva hormone testing specifically testing for cortisol and dhea-s levels the koenisburg urinary test the pupillary constriction test and the orthostatic hypotension test how can we heal adrenal fatigue once adrenal fatigue is established implementing lifestyle and nutritional changes can help to support and heal the adrenal glands the first and most important step is to remove as many stressors as possible from your life however since it may be difficult or even impossible to remove some of the stressors in our life we need to take steps to teach our bodies how to cope with stress better it is very important to organize a list of priorities and try not to put too much on your plate relieve stress with gentle not strenuous exercise meditation yoga deep breathing and doing things you enjoy take breaks when needed and laugh as often as possible as this can be very healing it is also essential to establish a regular pattern for sleeping going to bed and waking up at the same time every day sleep before midnight and get at least eight hours of sleep a night when you have adrenal fatigue it is also crucial to eat regularly and to eat healthy meals at least five servings of vegetables/day do not skip meals and do not give in to the temptation to consume junk food e.g foods containing sugar or white flour or drink excessive alcohol these can all have a negative impact on blood sugar levels which are usually regulated by the adrenal glands avoid caffeine e.g coffee as this can add more stress to the adrenal glands and make it more difficult to recover from adrenal fatigue ensure adequate protein and essential fatty acids e.g fish oil in the diet for nervous system and immune system support nutritional supplements such as vitamin c b complex especially vitamin b5 and magnesium can help the body replenish vitamins and minerals depleted during times of stress herbs such as rhodiola ashwaganda and siberian ginseng are wonderful adaptogens which help the body to cope with stress rescue remedy a specific type of bach flower remedy can also be very beneficial for dealing with acute anxiety or emotionally stressful situations because everyone is different dosages of these supplements should to be individualized to the specific person in conclusion adrenal fatigue can be a serious condition that should not be overlooked however once it is diagnosed lifestyle and dietary changes can be very useful to return them back to their optimal state note this article is intended for educational purposes only it is not intended to replace proper diagnosis and treatment by a qualified redevelopment of the former corpus christi site highlighted another issue as well for the last 20 years the school had provided space for the edgewood connection a family resource and support program operated by applegrove community complex this program provided all the benefits of a good child care program to children who were not in formal child care reduced adults isolation and provided educational workshops on parenting and healthy child development in the centre the children played with other pre-schoolers and learned how to share take turns and make friends they sang songs and listened to stories and learned language and literacy skills they played with puzzles and developed their brains and did crafts to enhance their fine motor skills meanwhile parents and caregivers received support from staff member louise maynard and other adults learned about children s development through workshops and informal conversations and became part of the community edgewood connection was an integral part of the lives of many families in the neighborhood when the tcdsb sold the site the program was forced to close since june 2010 it has been unable to find a new home the edgewood connection needs a safe and welcoming environment of about 1,000 square feet with stroller parking appropriate flooring and carpeting painting child-friendly washrooms food preparation space and storage for snacks craft supplies etc kitchen cabinets and equipment were donated in 2008 and can be installed in the new space at the jan 26 meeting susan fletcher applegrove s executive director
