gridiron girls cadets top stunnas by alycia catizone staff writer on wednesday night october 13 student council hosted its 21st powder puff football game this year the two teams that went head to head were the classy cadets and the shady stunnas as it seems every year the participating female players embraced the chance to prove that football isn t just a boy s game before the event a number of players could be seen wearing game jerseys face paint and even spray painted hair as admission to the game a canned food donation was required the food items that were collected are added to the month-long feed-a-friend food drive the donations are then made available to families in need during the holidays even though the powder puff game was the kickoff to the food drive the bins were already very full like regular season games the powder puff classic began at 7 p.m with each team stretching out and running some pregame drills the classy cadets took control of the game early with a quick score in the first quarter the cadets managed to hold the lead throughout the first half until the stunnas answered back with a score of their own despite a hard-fought effort by the stunnas the classy cadets came away with a 25 18 win in the end tori bainbridge one of the classy cadets players stated that she really enjoyed all of the aspects of the game according to bainbridge practices went well and the players had a good relationship with their coaches she said that the team had a lot of confidence in each other which helped contribute to the win for the shady stunnas tara farlow admitted that she and a lot of the other players enjoyed the intensity of the game she admitted that the practices were demanding and required sacrifice of free time but it was representative of a real football program 5

traditions remain the same at north schuylkill by anna james staff writer this year homecoming week was a success the football team dominated the game students and teachers showed their spartitude by participating in the spirit week activities and the school came together in an effort to show their pride for north schuylkill the idea of coming together follows a tradition in homecoming celebrations but could have been taken very literally in the first north schuylkill homecoming before 1977 north schuylkill was divided into high schools in ashland frackville and ringtown much like the elementary buildings were prior to the mrs dottie miller librarian aide and former north schuylkill student new construction three years ago the fall of 77 was the first year that all students of the district celebrated homecoming together in the same location a student from that year mrs dottie miller our librarian aide shared her memories of what the inaugural event was like there were no spirit days only on friday we were allowed to wear uniforms she explained the homecoming dance was also different instead of having just the dance it was themed and you could dress up for the event that year on a bitterly cold october night north schuylkill s spartan football marched onto the new field and defeated the mahanoy area golden bears winning the game only helped to pull the students closer it was a good crowd miller stated i remember the huge stadium and since people started knowing each other from the other towns more people showed up and cheered along with the excitement there were also some hectic events such as the introduction of the candidates miller added that was the most hectic year for homecoming people were late missing corsages and everything seemed turned upside-down despite the last minute rush miller remembers a time that people counted on their friends and had fun no matter the decade you attended north schuylkill whether it was 1977 or 2010 we all share one common bond the pride of being a spartan homecoming is a time to celebrate the bonds we ve made as friends and to make memories that we will carry with us for the rest of our lives 6

student council lends a helping hand by tara farlow staff writer the holidays are right around the corner and for a lot of families it means sharing great food while celebrating the good times unfortunately there are many families and individuals in our area who have to do without those things for this reason many local organizations including north schuylkill are contributing to wnep s feed a friend campaign feed a friend is an annual event that kicks off every year during homecoming week the food drive asks for donations of nonperishable food items but will also accept cash donations as well above sc members mike mcgrath and jess pukavage north schuylkill s connection to feed a friend is through the student council members mr lucas the student council adviser stated that as of the third week of october we have collected eight boxes of food and raised almost $200 in donations although we have yet to reach last year s numbers the school is asking that you continue to offer what you can lucas stated that there is no anticipated goal to reach he continued our only goal is to help as many people as possible donations are collected for the salvation army in pottsville and will run through the third week of november the money collected will then be used to buy turkeys to prepare thanksgiving dinners 7
