letter from the editor this semester we ve been challenged with an intangible theme unlike the green or circles issues of previous blending magazine editions spring 2010 tackles the concept titled timeframe for the final exhibition of the fua fine arts department we ll let prof eva rorandelli fine arts coordinator fully explain the theme s artistic-visual implications in the following pages and begin by asking our readers to truly keep the theme title in mind as you read the articles in the current issue timeframe but also separately time and frame how does a student or individual and in what contexts does he or she grapple with the issue of time how is the passing of time and the experiences lived within it perceived differently abroad in florence in italy as for frames what are the geographical social visual and cultural frames to capture and explore here we invite you to discover how one student conceives time as a musical soundtrack others who nagivate the contents of frames constructed by cities and landscapes faculty and staff offering their insights on life experiences and creativity and of course the rich artwork produced for the fua timeframe exhibition that was held at ganzo cultural association in via de macci il tempo scorre time flows and we hope to have expressively portrayed a rich accumulation of images and thoughts in the spaces and frames created in the meantime happy reading the blending staff may 2010 blending 6 1

timeframe florence university of the arts student exhibition april 7-20 2010 introduction by prof and studio arts coordinator eva rorandelli throughout history artists have had a unique relationship with time during most of the modern era the only way to visually record a memory of a place a face an object etc was by painting drawing or sculpting a scene but with the invention of photography capable of instantly capturing moments of time and 20th century revolutions such as einstein s theory of relativity artists were free to investigate time in different ways today with our new ability to access information instantly using networked digital technologies artists are representing time in entirely new ways timeframe is an exhibition that focuses on this new relationship with past present and future the aim is not to show how artists stop or freeze moments of time but rather how they frame it bracket it by putting slices of experienced time in context timeframe is thus not about examining the truth of things as they have happened or are happening in the world but rather the mechanisms by which those things are contextualized and made sense of any medium can be used to frame time drawing quickly captures a sense of a moment or visualizes possible moments or ideas for the future video and film frame time by flowing with it by giving it a frame not only at the edges of the picture but a starting and stopping point in time painting has an ambiguous relationship with time unlike photography which captures discrete slices of it paintings are elaborated over a series of moments days months or years and the experience of them is equally open sculpture enables an immersive interaction with time the time to see things from different angles like epochs of history printmaking builds up time on a surface in layers the impression of the print is an inversion of time a negative moment that can be repeated indefinitely through each of these media timeframe seeks to capture the nature of how time is represented an integral aspect of the identity of florence through the eyes of a young generation of artists student exhibition april 7-20 2010 blending 6 7

timeframe by katrina ballard addressing the idea of piecing together experiences from different times in life.the exhibit aimed to explore not the fact of one moment captured on film but the interpretation of many moments in the past present and future a quick snapshot timeframe the florence university of the arts student exhibition that opened in april was a unique combination of student artwork students featured in the exhibit responded to the theme in various ways from personal to philosophical to political representations one of the boldest and central pieces was a painting by katherine schanck depicting herself submerged in freezing water an expression of reluctance and irritation on her face the painting features small details like bubbles escaping the corner of the artist s mouth yet is complied in simple stokes with a few bright colors the artist brings the viewer into the moment sharply as though the viewer too has been suddenly splashed in the face with frigid water freezing the moment marina garcia s endless devastation is a pair of powerful portraits demonstrating the social conditions of civilian victims of the iraqi war a baby on one canvas and a woman on the other seem to represent a moment of separation between mother and child with dark smoky colors and hazy strokes conveying confusion and sorrow another painting featuring similar dark colors took on a much lighter tone rachel follis painting of a goat entitled at pantalica ranch requires a second look first the goat looks as though he is smirking conveying a sense of humor but from a different angle he looks old and wise follis says she intended to show things aren t what they seem yet her intention was to show how the goat s shadow painted in the murky background looks like a second goat is nearby other paintings rather than demonstrating significant single moments took on the forms of collages consistent with the theme of bracketing time,yu lan tang s thinking features many different objects representing convergence between the modern and traditional fantastic and realistic.the central image is a beautiful chinese bridge surrounded by chinese texts and forming the outline of a person s body this interesting approach must be examined carefully to see ironically sarah lovett chose to illustrate the absence of time in a painting of a victorian-looking living room with a back garden visible through a patio door the room décor is quite stuffy and stiff yet a regal orange tiger poses astutely on a rug in the middle of the floor strangely the full-grown tiger emanates a sense of peace over offered had a more literal interpretation of time using symbols to show movement and transformation for example sarah lovett s pen and ink drawing of an elderly hand holding onto a cane that turns into a tree trunk and roots clearly demonstrates the title age is beautiful savannah trevino s drawing of swinging pocket watches hands of time seems generic until the viewer notices that the watch strings are tied onto fingers like old-fashioned reminders overall the timeframe exhibit offers an interesting theme with at least one interpretation to which anyone could relate collectively the exhibit achieves the goal of framing many moments in time from several different lives propelling us to think about the extreme peculiarities in each single life let alone among them all 8 blending 6

student-artist perspectives from the exhibition name anna cunningham city and state charleston illinois university eastern illinois university title of your painting living geologically dimensions 80x80cm medium paint on canvas twine artist s statement my painting is meant to portray the concept that the present is always built upon the past while regarding the layers in a stone one might my wonder what was occurring during its formation with each layer of sediment a new section is constructed which one day will result in something completely new what was once a sea could now be a mountain what was once a child is now a grandparent and what once was is now to never be again just like the layers in a rock life builds off of one another to create a new colorful solid foundation each strip of time leads to another and helps to make the reality we know today however just as there are gaps between the canvases there are places in time that we wish to forget but with this dismissal from the mind there are always strands of the action which still remain may it be shown by twine or loved ones or even the next layer of sediment time binds us all together.this piece is constructed by torn canvas paint and twine name sarah lovett city and state madison new jersey university university of delaware title of your painting we ve got time dimensions 80 x 80 cm medium acrylic paints artist s statement time is a frustrating concept there is never enough of it it goes by too quickly with my piece i have created a space where time does not matter my intent is to show a space that represents the absence of time essentially here time will never run out and if time will never run out you have all the time in the world i want this space to be peaceful and recognizable yet slightly fantastical as if it truly exists somewhere in the world using lots of detail and small slow strokes i try to convey a slow peaceful mood nothing is rushed and everything including the colors is soft and warm i think that time goes by too quickly and using my paintbrush i have tried to slow it down blending 6 9

framing timeframe a behind the scenes look at the student art exhibition by carrie schoenborn eva rorandelli is the coordinator of studio art at palazzi she has worked at palazzi for about three years and has as recently as this semester become the coordinator of studio art timeframe is the first show she has curated and in the following interview she shares her thoughts and experiences in organizing the exhibition whatwasyourroleinthe was it difficult organization of the student art curatingan exhibition with exhibition timeframe such a wide i organized it and came up with the theme variety of works timeframe a year ago we had an exhibit that was about shapes the title was circles so i figured this year we could do something different that has to do with time instead i was trying to find a title that was interesting and a theme that we could use with different classes different media so i came up with timeframe myself and a few other people selected the works that seemed to be better together more cohesive in the space at ganzo and that was the show no i think it was actually interesting because you can really see how there were so many different approaches to the same idea that when using completelydif fe rent materials and completely di f fe r e nt sensi bi lities individual people think of the theme in different ways howmany different classes were represented in the show were students asked to create works specifically related to the theme timeframe or was it just a common thread throughout many works we gave the theme actually not much before the show so it was a little bit challenging for the students but they managed to do a good job they were working on their midterm projects and some how they managed to create a project that also had to deal with the theme and everybody wrote a statement wrote some critical ideas of their work and how the work could be interpreted into the theme therewas printmaking sculpture ceramic fresco sketchbook there we realsodif fe rentle ve l s foundation intermediate and advanced drawing and foundation intermediate and advanced painting so many many studio art classes were there any works in the show that really surprised you well i guess they all surprised me in the sense that they were so different if you look at the show everything was so different so when you see them all together it was actually quite pleasant as a visual impact of the whole thing together i liked the overall environment so i don t have one favorite piece.

shakespeare in modern times an international romeo and juliet in florence by carrie schoenborn oh romeo romeo por qué eres romeo the words echoed down three stories through the open courtyard of palazzo strozzi to land upon the ears of the actors reporters and spectators below these were the first lines the audience heard in the improvisational theater spectacle conceived and directed by bari hochwald of florence international theater company and hosted by the palazzo strozzi foundation on the afternoon of april 6th several palazzi students actors actresses tourists and residents came together to perform a multilingual rendition of the famous balcony scene from william shakespeare s romeo and juliet the script included 9 different languages arabic dutch english finnish french german italian spanish and swedish and the impromptu cast was just as diverse including more than 20 juliets and 15 romeos ranging from school-aged children to adults in their 60s nearly 446 years after the birth of william shakespeare he is still bringing the arts to people around the world in response to stratford-upon-avon s challenge to bring to life the balcony scene people all over the globe are creating their own unique interpretation of the scene florence s submission to the celebration distinguishes its international standing in the world as well as the possibility for the classic to meld with the contemporary to create an exciting new experience anyone was welcome to join the cast and several palazzi students took the opportunity to create their own interpretation of romeo or juliet one such student elizabeth groshek commented it was nice that anyone could participate because i didn t feel so much pressure i had never been involved in a theater production before so it was the perfect opportunity to try something new it felt good to be a part of a bigger group something bigger than myself and people back home will be able to watch it and share a part of my study abroad experience and be jealous states groshek half-joking groshek believed that the performance was a creative way to bring people together and celebrate cultural diversity i was able to meet and chat with locals and really get involved in the community besan hasan another palazzi student performed the english and arabic lines from the script while besan has performed dances before this was also her début as an actress it seemed like a unique opportunity to become a part of my florentine community besan replied when asked why she had decided to participate even now centuries after it was created shakespeare s work still has an amazing universal ability to bring people together because of this and his numerous other contributions to the world i say happy 446th birthday william shakespeare to view the final video search an international romeo and juliet in florence on youtube.com 13 blending 6
