no one is watching. The first of the three sub-themes of honesty is being explored in classes with students looking to find and nominate a peer to be recognised as exhibiting these qualities. Double Dolphin awards will underline the value placed on this by the school, parents and the community. You will recall the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) material arriving in your letter box in July and within it the following graphic again underlining the three R’s of respectful, reasonable and responsible. The second sub-theme is responsibility followed by reliability. You may wish to enjoin the conversation at home and look at what this looks and sounds like at your place. Consistent expectations offer huge benefits for children. PB4L HUI The last day of July saw a small group of parents and staff attending the Term 3 ParentTeacher meeting looking again at the work done by trustees and the working group around the school’s response to student behaviours. A short presentation brought everyone up to date and some questions followed looking at the various aspects and application of what has been outlined. Nothing was altered and now with the third term underway the trial moves through the next few weeks to see whether changes need to be made or whether the revised policy and framework can be adopted by the board of trustees. Reference material will be placed on the school’s website in due course for your reference. Thanks to all those who have contributed to this review your input is appreciated and valued. BOARD OF TRUSTEES ELECTIONS The Havelock Board of Trustees has five parent representative positions for community/parent representation - usually a three year term. You do not have to have a child currently enrolled at the school to be a trustee but you could be nominated by a current parent. By rotation two or three of these positions come up for election every eighteen months or so. As it happens two are coming up in October this year and although October still seems far off it is only three months away when the formalities are put in place. The board has for some time been considering succession and this period leading up to this election is an ideal time to consider what you might bring to the table so to speak. Further info may be found on the NZSTA website. Current board members are listed with their contact details on our website here. . Mauri Ora na Akoranga ~ Learning for Life… since 1861 Page 5

NEW PARENTS’ WEBSITE The MoE have set up a central resource to give parents information and answers to their commonly asked questions in plain language. They also have redeveloped their main portal now at WINTER SPORTS AT THE RAI Despite the grey skies Friday the first of August stayed dry if not too warm – ‘tis winter not? After a slightly late arrival the day was off to a prompt start with seven rotations/activities to work through before 14:00. A senior and junior circuit saw a variety of acitivites undertaken from large and small ball skills/games and obstacle courses to Jump Jam. Behaviour throughout the day was exemplary despite mixing with a whole new set of peers. Mauri Ora na Akoranga ~ Learning for Life… since 1861 Page 9

The photos tell a story… Marcus has to get low to negotiate the hoop; Rachel becomes a human pole for the juniors as Josh tries to get the ball to behave; Mr Throssell getting seniors organised around the skills needed to enjoy the beautiful game; Ashelyn assumes the best position to get through the net although it did involve mud. Thanks to all those who so generously offered their time and vehicles to enable us to attend and thanks to Barbara at Rai and the large team that made it happen.
