THANK YOU A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; AS I HAVE LOVED YOU, THAT YOU ALSO LOVE ONE ANOTHER. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another. —Jn 13:34-35 For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. ... And IF ONE MEMBER SUFFERS, ALL THE MEMBERS SUFFER WITH IT; OR IF ONE MEMBER IS HONORED, ALL THE MEMBERS REJOICE WITH IT. —1 Cor 12:12, 26 To our Thai family in Christ who have shared with us a part of our journey of faith. Thank you for all your help and encouragement along the way. To our spiritual sons and daughters in the faith. You are all dear to us! -! PiEaw and PiYuang for all your faithful help in the work of the Lord—You are very special to us! -! Kook and Jub—The Lord is with you! -! Pi Peaw, Yaa, Khun Yaa, Raquel (Nok)—You are all letters of the manifold grace of God! - Pi Son—We love you! - Pat—You are faithful to the Lord! ! Our common journey has just begun. PREFACE T ODAY A REFORMATION is sweeping the globe. Jesus is reforming His church back to the book of Acts. ! In Acts, the early disciples didn’t have denominations. They were a movement, a family of believers. ! In Acts, the early disciples didn’t focus on church buildings. They met in houses. ! In Acts, the early disciples, when they met, didn’t follow minutely planned programs. They allowed the Holy Spirit to lead them. ! In Acts, the early disciples didn’t have religious professionals. They didn’t carry any titles, such as Pastor or Apostle. Paul, for example, wouldn’t have introduced himself as ‘The Apostle Paul.’ He would have said, “Hi, I’m brother Paul.” In his letters, he always wrote, “Paul, called to be an apostle ...” ! In Acts, the early disciples didn’t argue about whether or not the supernatural had vanished. They all believed in the supernatural, and it was normal for them to display it. ! In Acts, the early disciples didn’t argue about whether or not believers should be baptized by sprinkling or immersion. They didn’t argue about whether or not you can be baptized as a child. They were all baptized by full immersion on their own faith. They all got baptized after they had heard and

12 ! PREFACE believed the good news about their co-death, co-burial and co-resurrection with Jesus. ! In Acts, the early disciples didn’t argue about whether or not everybody who believes in Christ automatically has the Holy Spirit. They didn’t argue about whether or not everybody speaks in tongues. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and they all spoke in tongues. ! And the list goes on. ! With this book we would like to make a contribution to that reformation back to Acts. We hope that it will help believers to come back to the simplicity of the gospel and the truth about receiving the Holy Spirit. ! The Holy Spirit is a gift that is for all believers. Just like in Acts, all believers can receive the Holy Spirit today. And, just like in Acts, when believers receive the Holy Spirit, there will be an accompanying sign (speaking in tongues). ! Of course, receiving the Holy Spirit is just the beginning. And speaking in tongues is not all. There is much more. But it all begins with receiving the Holy Spirit. Before believers can learn to be led by the Holy Spirit, they first need to have received the Holy Spirit! ! After people have received the Holy Spirit, they will often want to (and may have to) leave behind the old structures and the old systems they have grown accustomed to. Religious establishments don’t like Spirit-directed activities. Religion likes to hold onto the status quo, the protocol, the known, the predictable, the self-effort and selfrighteousness. But there is no power in that. So when people receive the Holy Spirit and discover the authentic Spiritfilled life and the freedom that Jesus came to give us, it will also cause them to come out of the box. !

INTRODUCTION “And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I WILL POUR OUT OF MY SPIRIT ON ALL FLESH … ” —Jl 2:28, Acts 2:17 “ … [and] the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.” — Hb 2:14 T ODAY WE ARE LIVING in the last days. God is pouring out of His Spirit on all flesh—on all kinds of people, from all continents, from all nations, from all tribes, and from all tongues, who all qualify to receive because of His matchless grace—in unprecedented numbers. There are currently about half a billion people from all around the world who have made what is called the Pentecostal experience—the infilling of the Holy Spirit—, and the numbers are rapidly increasing daily.

14 ! INTRODUCTION ! These are extremely exciting times to live in. ! Globally, we are seeing an unprecedented and unstoppable move of God, an outpouring of His Holy Spirit on a scale never before seen in history. ! And you and I can be part of it. ! I’ve (Albert) had my Pentecostal experience more than 20 years ago, in a dusty opal-mining town called Coober Pedy in Australia. I’ll talk about this in CHAPTER 7: FROM AN ALPINE LAKE TO A DUSTY OPAL-MINING TOWN—ALBERT’S STORY, how God led me from an alpine lake in Austria to finally find Him, hear the gospel of Jesus and receive the Holy Spirit in the desert of Australia. ! My wife, Peninnah, is a PhD and a medical doctor (MD) and specialist in pediatric infectious diseases. She’s heard the gospel of Jesus and received the Holy Spirit in Newcastle, Australia coming from a Thai Chinese-Buddhist background. She talks about her experience in CHAPTER 8: FROM LIFELESS IDOLS TO THE LIVING GOD—PENINNAH’S STORY. ! Ever since we have started our journey of faith, we’ve seen hundreds of people receive the Holy Spirit when we ministered to them. Most of them received the Holy Spirit when we prayed for them—either before, after, or while they got water baptized. Some received without us doing anything at all. Without us laying hands on them. Without us praying for them. In this book, we’re going Who this to share some of these experiences with you. book is for If you haven’t received the Holy Spirit yet but you want to, we hope that this book will help you to receive the Holy Spirit easily. The Holy Spirit is a gift. That’s the amazing thing about it! You can either keep

INTRODUCTION 15 trying hard to receive the Holy Spirit on the basis of your own merit. But then you won’t receive Him! Or you can hear the good news about what Jesus Christ has done for you already, and once you believe, you can receive the Holy Spirit easily by faith as a gift. ! If you already have received the Holy Spirit, we hope that this book will benefit you as well. We trust that it will give you some insights that will boost your confidence so that that you can minister to others as well, and help them to receive the Holy Spirit also. ! We’ve seen how receiving the Holy Spirit has changed people’s lives, What Receiving the Holy Spirit including ours. We’ve seen how it has Does to People ! made believers move from a cerebral experience of God (head knowledge) to an experiential level. Leif Hetland put it well when he said, “the Christian life is not an education; it’s an encounter.” I have found that when people receive the Holy Spirit and have this experience what is called the baptism with the Holy Spirit they’re no longer the same. They have moved from head knowledge to heart belief and experience. (We will go into what it means to be baptized with the Holy Spirit in more detail in CHAPTER 2: WHAT DOES IT MEAN ‘TO HAVE RECEIVED THE HOLY SPIRIT’? and CHAPTER 20: “IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ‘RECEIVING THE HOLY SPIRIT’ AND ‘BEING BAPTIZED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT’?”) ! I see so many well-meaning people trying to learn about God in religious settings. What those people need is not more education about God. They need an encounter. They need an ongoing experience with God. It makes all the difference. Someone might have written a PhD thesis about cheese cakes and ‘knows’ all about cheese cakes without
