The Bible, Genesis & Geology Dedication I dedicate this book to the memory of the pioneers of evangelical premillennial and dispensational theology. Men like Thomas Chalmers, Clarence Larkin, Arthur Constance, Finis Jennings Dake, Cyrus I. Scofield, and others who boldly trusted the Spirit’s admonition in Proverbs 3:5-6 and brought forth much wisdom for those who would follow in their footsteps in these latter days. I also dedicate this work to every intellectually honest man or woman who not only has the willingness to seek out the truth, but the courage to embrace the truth when it finds a place in their heart. – Gaines R. The Bible, Genesis & Geology Foreword The first edition of The Bible, Genesis and Geology was published on May 23, 2010, and the first e-book edition was released shortly thereafter. In order to keep down the cost of the print edition, the illustrations were black and white. Color was not an issue at that time because the majority of ebook readers were only available with monochromic screens. In three short years, many additional Scriptural and scientific observations concerning the doctrine of the Genesis gap have come to light. Much has changed with respect to traditional books and publishing. Electronic media are rapidly replacing paper-based media. E-book readers are now designed with color screens and can display documents embedded with interactive links to Internet resource references. These readers also have active Tables of Contents that allow quick chapter navigation, and fonts can be scaled to a desired size. My wife loves her Kindle, but I’m a little old fashioned and still prefer the look and feel of a paper book. Since I am not alone in that respect, I am publishing a Second Edition of The Bible, Genesis & Geology in both print and e-book editions. This Second Edition reflects the growing knowledge base for RuinReconstruction interpretation (Gap Theory) doctrine and also provides an enhanced reading experience in both print and e-book. It includes color graphics and illustrations, many of which are new. The Second Edition cover has been completely redesigned. I have also added numbered source reference notations throughout the print edition, and a complete table of these sources is listed following the last chapter. Direct links to the reference materials on the Internet are available in the Kindle edition. In response to suggestions from readers of the first print edition, I have included an Index of key words in the back of the new print edition. It is my sincere hope that the materials in this new edition will enhance your understanding of the Holy Bible, God's preserved written Word. I also hope you will gain a greater understanding of the Earth's geologic record, which is a faithful witness to God's Word, written in stone and preserved across deep time for our instruction in His wisdom. ix

The Bible, Genesis & Geology Preface "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." (Genesis 1:1 KJV) ? "And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters." (Genesis 1:2 KJV) Most people believe the seven days of Genesis to be some enigmatic description of the Earth's geologic history. Numerous interpretations have been put forth to harmonize the Biblical narrative with the observations of the geologic record. However, the Scriptural reality of the matter is this: The seven days are not a description of the Earth's geology at all. There is a time gap between the first two verses of Genesis. In this book you will learn about a controversial, lesser-known literal interpretation of the Genesis narrative that does not contradict the scientific 1

Gaines R. Johnson evidence for an Old Earth. Commonly called the Gap Theory or RuinReconstruction interpretation, it is a theological doctrine that predates Darwin's Theory of Evolution. It is based on the Scriptural fact that in the second verse of Genesis, the Holy Bible simply and clearly states that the planet Earth was already here in a ruined state before the Divine process described in those seven days begins. In other words, the 4.5 billion years of Earth's geology and natural history took place before the time of the seven days. That makes the seven days of Genesis a new generation of the heavens and Earth. Understanding this Biblical mystery begins with the precise wording of this New Testament cross-reference: "For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men." (2 Peter 3:5-7 KJV) Contrary to popular fundamentalist interpretation, the above passage is NOT a reference to Noah's flood. The only other place in the Bible where the Earth was covered in waters is Genesis 1:2. The ramifications are obvious. The literal wording suggests that the "heavens and the earth, which are now" (made during the seven days) was not the first-time creation of all things as is traditionally assumed. The Word of God is telling the reader there was a prior populated world on the face of this Old Earth before God formed the present world of Adam and his descendants, Modern Man. "And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth." (Genesis 1:28 KJV) The Bible itself provides insight into a great mystery in Earth's natural history at what is known as the Pleistocene - Holocene boundary. Science remains at a loss to definitively explain the Ice Age and the anomaly of the mysterious mega fauna extinctions across the face of the Earth about 13,000 to 10,000 Radio Carbon years ago. Geologic evidence from that period indicates a cosmic impact event about 12,800 years ago, precipitating extraordinary global massive volcanism, gigantic tidal waves, seismic activity on a vast scale, and extreme temperature swings on the Earth over a geologically brief period of time. It is no coincidence that the Bible in Genesis 1:2 describes the Earth as flooded, desolate, and in darkness in the time frame closely corresponding to these catastrophic events in the Earth's natural history. Clearly, these two mysteries are linked. 2

The Bible, Genesis & Geology Why the old "world that then was" ended and why God made a new world and Modern Man require a study into the ancient origins of Satan and the angels. The Spirit reveals these things in detail in the wisdom and prophetic books of the Bible. The Earth has an ancient natural history that can be deciphered from the geologic record, but it also has an equally important ancient spiritual history that can only be deciphered from rightly dividing the Holy Bible. Knowledge of both is required to correctly reconcile the observations of geology and the Book of Genesis. We pray you will find this material useful in your study of God's Holy Word. These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, (Genesis 2:4 KJV) 3

The Bible, Genesis & Geology Introduction: The Ancient Earth The first verse of the Bible makes this simple declarative statement: "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." (Genesis 1:1 KJV) There is nothing in this verse that tells the reader how God created the heaven and Earth, nor is there any indication given of exactly when He created the heaven and Earth except "In the beginning." Earth scientists estimate that the age of the planet dates back about 4.5 billion years to the beginning of the Hadean Eon, an obscure geologic time. The name is from the Latin word Hades and is descriptive of what scientists theorize was the state of the Earth when it was first formed. The prevailing theory is that the Earth accreted from rocks and dust orbiting the young sun. At first the Earth's surface was covered by an ocean of magma that eventually cooled. When the planet's surface was cool enough, the water oceans were formed and things progressed from there. 5
