·04 feb 8.11· 2/4/11 12:47 pm page 1 4 beach metro news tuesday february 8 2011 beach resident held in iranian prison wife hopes letter writing campaign will help fr him ee by bill maclean sometimes concern for your family trumps concern for your own safety but then again beach resident hamid ghassemi-shall really had no reason to expect any problems when he decided to visit his ill mother in his native country of iran hamid had been back to iran at least once before on the anniversary of his father s death in 2004 his wife antonella mega told me that he had been depressed after not getting to see his father before he died or making the funeral service because of the war in iraq when his mother fell ill hamid felt he must go see her in may of 2008 hamid who is a canadian citizen flew to iran to stay at the family home with his brother alborz while at the hospital visiting his mother the home was ransacked alborz was arrested and all hamid s official travel papers including his canadian and iranian passports were taken hamid immediately went to the canadian consulate in tehran to get his canadian passport replaced but was told there that he would need to get his iranian photo phil lameira passport replaced as well if he planned to leave the country apparently the iranian antonella mega is trying to help free her husband hamid ghassemi-shall from government does not recognize the an iranian jail by raising awareness about his situation concept of dual citizenship and requires passport when he arrived he was arrested and hustled off to that all iranian citizens have an iranian passport hamid contacted the iranian authorities several times and the infamous evin prison the same prison where canadian was eventually told to come to the offices and pick up his photojournalist zahra kazemi was taken to and subsequently died there or was killed as many contend at home antonella mega was frantic she didn t hear from hamid for another 18 months not until november 2009 when he called he tearfully told her that he and his brother were considered spies and that he had been forced to sign his own death sentence in january of 2010 mega was notified that hamid s brother had died while in prison apparently from stomach cancer the phone calls stopped after july 2010 following a prison uprising in section 350 of the prison mega said that hamid was not involved in the uprising but the event had resulted in a stricter lock-down of the facility and restricted all phone calls the family has retained the services of a lawyer in iran a woman named giti pourfazel she has tried with the help of several expert witnesses to convince the courts that the evidence they have against hamid and alborz an apparent email has been fabricated but has had no luck in getting him freed the canadian minister for foreign affairs the honourable lawrence cannon has assured mega that his department as well as the department of consular affairs under the newlyappointed minister honourable diane ablonczy is working on hamid s case but mega is not satisfied with the pace of negotiations i spoke to jeff richardson assistant to minister ablonczy who told me that the iranian government is very closed and that very little communication comes their way from it we are taking these cases very seriously richardson said referring to hamid s case as well as that of saeed malekpour a richmond hill resident who like hamid returned to iran to visit an ill relative and has been imprisoned ever since and sentenced to be hanged and hossein derakhshan another found myself outside my locked running car with the door slightly ajar perplexed i spotted neriks alterations tucked in by mcdonalds mr nerick kindly clipped and bent a wire clothes hanger after 20 minutes of failed unlocking attempts i gave up my technique was evidently flawed it wasn t possible to cab home to get the second set of keys because the spare house keys were in the purse locked on the front seat of the car when i asked a lovely woman in the parking lot for 25 cents she gave me 50 cents reluctantly nodding she didn t think i was the local panhandler while at the phone mr nerik stepped out of his shop to ask how was it going after hearing how the phone ate money he invited me in offering use of his cell phone and glasses next he put on his coat and decided to assess the situation himself he then proceeded to try a variety of methods nearly unlocking the door a second gentleman joined the fray he enthusiastically brought more implements that were modified and tested mr nerik had locked up his shop and the two men worked in the brutal cold for almost an hour when i asked them to stop go get warmed up my husband should be home one gentleman said so what can he do to which i responded so you know him moments later the door opened the two gentlemen wished me well and walked off when i entered mr nerik s shop to thank him he ever so graciously refused my modest gift explaining sincerely his thoughts regarding helping each other arriving home that afternoon i felt a strange calm prior events of the day that may have contributed to some distraction seemed remote and inconsequential still shaking from the severe cold i mulled how were those men feeling as lame as my problem was these people spontaneously gave their time with kindness and total disregard 12 beach metro news tuesday february 8 2011 boaters are told that industrial wind turbines blow no good by phil lameira they love their boats and they love their lake many of them rely on the wind to get out and enjoy the high waters but relying on wind for energy not in my backyard say some of the many boaters at the various yacht clubs at the bluffs on jan 30 the bluffers park yacht club was host to an information session on the facts about industrial wind turbines and their affect on health and the environment about 30 or so `captains and boat enthusiasts from the local yacht clubs attended the meeting which was organised by bpyc s past commodore grace morrison and roy wright president of save the toronto bluffs a group opposing wind farms in lake ontario beach metro was invited to sit in on the presentations but was not allowed to photograph anyone inside guests or presenters the reason given was that it was not a political meeting and politics were to be left out only facts morrison told me wright started things off with various statements suggesting that people should be very afraid of toronto hydro s plans to build a wind farm near the bluffs stating that even though the plan is to start with 60 wind turbines you can be sure that it would soon grow to 500 wright also said that he asked the new beaches councillor marymargaret mcmahon what her position was on the matter he said her position is the same as david miller s who started this thing in secrecy in 2003 that if there s sufficient wind toronto hydro can go ahead and put the wind farm in guests invited to the meeting were then asked to state what they understand about industrial wind turbines and how they can benefit or not benefit society the segment quickly shifted to blaming dalton mcguinty and the liberals for increases in hydro bills and a poor energy policy wind concerns ontario wco president john laforet was next to deliver his views on the matter laforet who recently ran for councillor in ward 43 informed everyone that the lake ontario wind turbine project which was started in 2003 was hidden from tax payers for nearly five years he argued that since no one in the world has been stupid enough to build wind turbines in fresh water the government clearly has no idea what they are doing he continued to focus on what sounded more like a conspiracy theory in which the liberal government and toronto hydro have been working in secret and telling lies to people in order to see the project through without any scientific research on the effects of wind turbines on people or nature nearby he used sentences such as they can do whatever they want and they deny science it s madness since there was no one from toronto hydro or any liberal government officials to rebut the statements i was left wondering about the validity of their assertions we were then treated to a 45 minute university lecture on `noise by dr lu lombardi the infrasound expert dr lombardi presented study after study after study on how noise is bad for people s health especially sub-sonic noise or noise you can t hear i also learned that aero-dynamic modulated noise cannot be shielded which apparently is a very bad thing john mason a volunteer and former campaign manager for laforet then concluded the meeting by having the audience ask questions bob cassidy a member of the bfyc took the opportunity to say that the g ove rnment doesn t give a rat s ass about us a woman sitting next to me did make a very important and valid statement at the end one i was itching to make myself i caution people that you haven t really presented a totally unbiased presentation said cheryl carr a local resident and a member of bpyc she strongly appreciated the presentation by the panelists and is grateful for their efforts but carr admitted she was disappointed that there were no representatives from other organizations to argue the other side morrison did tell everyone in the room that a club member with knowledge of the other side had invited someone to come but they did not respond that is a true statement she assured everyone when asked specifically who was asked to attend morrison did not know as for a non-political presentation i m not sure that continually referring to david miller dalton mcguinty and the liberal party as many times as the panelists and the guests did is in keeping with the spirit on nonpartisanship after attending and reading about a number of meetings on the issue what i would like to see is a comprehensive presentation of facts in layman s terms by activists as well as government officials environment groups and health specialists on both sides a civil and open discussion with no politics whatsoever tell me what good will a wind farm in my lake bring to the people of toronto and ontario and then tell me why it s a bad idea only then can i make a decision on whether or not i approve of it any organization willing to take it on they deny science it s madness john laforet carmen clairvoyant beaches `authentic medium guidance healing modalities 990 kingston road 416-755-1990 nightanddaydecor.com business personal events story on page 11 i am referring to my old hockey skates which have seen me through many a bleak and unforgiving canadian winter they are the last in a long line of skates i have possessed starting with my first pair which my parents gave me when i was about six years old they were used of course as i suppose every child s first pair was in those days because even second-hand ones cost a few bucks or more depending on the condition but anyway i loved them and that s what counts in matters of this nature at the beginning of this column i referred to my skates as companions of long standing and i believe that description deserves a little clarification it took me several years and dozens of truly spectacular face-first flops before i mastered the act of standing up and moving around on the things in fact those early difficulties directly contributed to my first broken heart back when i was 11-years-old i used to go pleasure skating every saturday afternoon at the local hockey arena and i one of my fellow skaters was a darkhaired charmer named esther i longed with all my pre-pubescent heart to link arms with esther for a romantic twirl around the ice one day she accepted my invitation and soon we were gliding about the ice to the haunting rhythm of the day titled `i ll be with you in apple blossom time that was the only record in the arena s music library but what cared i since i was actually holding the object of my adoration and she didn t seem to mind that one bit then my right skate caught a rut in the ice and down i tumbled taking my dimpled darling with me we were unhurt but after we clambered to our feet she told me in quite loud tones that the fall had torn a hole in her brand new silk stockings so her mother would would never buy her another pair which would automatically condemn her to a lifetime of scorn and social ostracism i took that to mean get lost jerk or some such similar sentiment so i skated away and never saw esther again just to make matters worse her heated condemnation of me and all my oafish ways caused the ice to melt and i was ejected for life from the arena on the grounds that it was all my fault to this day i regard that as a bum rap but it did get me thinking about how thoroughly frozen water has crept into our everyday vocabulary when our activities are such that we are heading toward trouble we are said to be skating on thin ice when we want a mutual friend to introduce us to someone we ask him to break the ice for us and we refer to a person we are fond of as being a good skate a person who cannot make his point is said to be skating in circles the jewellery we lavish upon our loved ones is called ice and just to adopt a lofty note i am pleased to point out that years ago eugene o neill wrote an acclaimed play titled the iceman cometh perhaps this is as good a time as any to introduce a timely note into this communique so here it is we are all doing our best to cope with the bad weather that nature has thrown our way so be nice scrape your ice speaking personally i have already taken a few unscheduled plummets to the pavement this winter and while they were short trips they were not the sort of local merchants if you saw their ad in beach metro news let them know music wine go naturally it is said that music can soothe the savage beast maybe so but if a hungry lion is attacking you i rather doubt whether a little mozart will deter him when it comes to people it s a different story music can definitely affect us sometimes reflecting our mood other times altering it feeling down melancholy music usually fits the bill if elated or excited up-tempo stuff keeps pace if hyper often some soft music can mellow us out actually changing our perspective this is the power of music recent studies now suggest that the type of music you listen to while sipping wine can dramatically affect the taste a few years back heriot watt university psychology professor adrian north tested 250 students and found that the taste of wine changed by up to 60 depending on the vibe of the tune a red and white wine were tasted no type mentioned while four types of music were played carmina burana by orff powerful and heavy waltz of the flowers from the nutcracker by tchaikovsky subtle and refined just can t get enough by nouvelle vague zingy and refreshing and slow breakdown by michael brook mellow and soft the white wine was rated 40 more zingy and refreshing when just can t get enough was played but only 26 more mellow and soft when slow breakdown was heard the red was altered 25 by the playing of slow breakdown yet 60 by carmina burana how does this happen the results were attributed to `cognitive priming theory where the music edward finstein a.k.a the wine doctor wine writer according to these results it would seem that more bombastic up-tempo music affects the taste of wine more whether this research actually has any validity is questionable because several important criteria are missing from it the first is what exactly were the two wines tasted surely their inherent character alone would play a part in what was perceived i mean a light riesling or gamay is going to have a very different affect even without music on the taster than say a big oaky chardonnay or syrah/shiraz secondly the research never stated how all four types of music affected the wines taste or exactly how the red wines taste was altered only that it was did it make it less sharp more aggressive softer and rounder better balanced etc it didn t even say the proportion of men to women in the test group which might play a part in their reaction these are important issues to be sure 2560 gerrard st east east of victoria park dine-in take-out catering · 416.690.2098 mon-sat 7 am 9 pm · more inclined to purchase a french wine instead of a german one if accordian music was playing at the point of sale assuming the consumer likes both french and german wine this makes some sense the power of association could indeed stimulate a consumer to act in a certain way there s no questioning the power of music to move us and perhaps alter our state of mind somewhat as to whether it can actually affect our perception of wine i m not sure the research results are conclusive enough perhaps what we can conclude is that certain grape varieties and wine styles will probably be enjoyed perhaps just look for a pair of pants or a top in a cerend up at the back of the store at the bargain bins that is tain colour that way your eyes can focus on just that where you get the real deals get excited about and look forward to such as the birth of a child or buying our first home other changes fill us with trepidation that we either resist or ignore and hope will go away chip and dan heath in their book about change called switch give many examples of seemingly impossible situations where change happened one of those scenarios was a high school classroom that was being disrupted by the late arrival each day of rob and kent the change that mr miller the teacher was trying to bring about was to get rob and kent in their seats before class starts a daunting challenge the teens knew what was expected of them but prolonging the time spent in the hallway with their friends was way more important the hallway was the `cool place to be the classroom not so much mr miller made an inspired change in his classroom he brought in an old couch from home and put it right at the front of the room the couch was now the place to be you could slouch and relax rather than sitting upright in dorky desks suddenly rob and kent started arriving to class early so they could get the best seat genius queen street is a place where we see a lot of change cafés come and go stores move locations and the former bellefair united church is in the process of being turned into condominiums this is a change that beach united church has been instrumental in beach uc was born a little over three years ago when the congregations of bellefair and kew beach made the decision to join together it was the people that came together to form a new spiritual community buildings are not nearly as flexible these people had a vision where the church could be a central part of the community this meant letting go of the idea of a church as an organization that people joined and moving towards the idea of the church being a place nurturing the spiritual yearning that so many of us feel it means being willing to move beyond the walls of our church building and start to form partnerships with groups and individuals that might never step foot inside a church unless they were coming for another activity jesus had a knack for change he went to where people were told stories that people remembered listened to people and even on one occasion changed his mind and healed a woman s child a request he had initially refused he was the `couch because many people wanted to be where he was so what would the equivalent of the couch be at beach united church it could be the solar panels that will fill the roof of our `reduced-footprint newly renovated building on wineva avenue it could be the saturday morning `cooking with soul sessions where `foodies from all walks of life gather who knows but i hope that our couch has wheels because we have no idea where it might end up karen dale is
