NYMF 2014 WELCOME Hello Friends, July 7 - July 27, 2014 Welcome to The New York Musical Theatre Festival, now in its second decade! Once again we’re presenting more musical theatre in one place than you’ll find anywhere else – right here on the legendary 42nd Street through July 27. With so many productions, readings, concerts, and special events to enjoy, you may need to work to schedule it all, but it’s worth it. This year’s productions offer musical styles to satisfy any taste – bluegrass, pop, jazz, rock, Weimar Cabaret, country rock, urban steampunk, flamenco, and more – and the scores envelop beautiful stories ranging from fantastical to historical. We’re very excited to be back at The Pershing Square Signature Center, PTC Performance Space, and The Studio Theatre at Theatre Row. The Laurie Beechman Theatre at the West Bank Cafe is a welcome addition this year. Each of these first class venues strives to create an exceptional patron experience, so please try to visit them all. As always, we’re indebted to many people – to the hundreds of writers, directors, designers, producers, actors, and technicians; to the NYMF team, each of whom carries their love of this art form to work every day; and to our Board, donors, and sponsors who steadfastly provide the leadership and funding. And to you, our audience – thank you for joining us, enjoy the show and please remember to vote for your favorite! Sincerely, Dan Markley Executive Director & Producer TICKETS AT NYMF.ORG OR 212-352-3101 3

My Administration is determined to ensure that people from every neighborhood can be part of New York’s extraordinary cultural life, and I am happy to recognize NYMF and its organizers for their commitment to supporting our theatre community and to promoting and preserving this important art form. NYMF 2014 ABOUT NYMF theatre. Since the first Festival, more than 350 shows have been presented, featuring thousands of artists. The musicals and artists introduced at NYMF have gone on to further successes on and Off-Broadway, across the country, and around the globe – reaching millions of theatergoers worldwide. From West Side Story to Rent, from Guys and Dolls to In The Heights, from 42nd Street to If/Then, one thing is certain: musicals and New York City go hand in hand. Though song and dance have long played an important role in storytelling, it wasn’t until the turn of the 20th century in New York that book, music, and lyrics came together for the first time to form what we know today as the “book musical.” It is clear that even the earliest musicals were shaped and nourished by this city, influenced by the rumble of the subway train, and the rattle of the taxis. Even when it is not explicitly stated, New York City is a character in so many of the musicals we love, just as musical theatre is part of the identity of New York. In 2004, The New York Musical Theatre Festival was launched to provide a platform for artists to continue to mount exciting new works in the heart of New York’s theatre district. NYMF combines a grassroots festival model with a technical framework geared specifically to musicals. The Festival provides or subsidizes all the key components needed to realize a show, from theaters and technical equipment to marketing, industry, and audience outreach, giving independent artists and emerging producers resources and opportunities they couldn’t otherwise access or afford. Last year, NYMF was honored with a Drama Desk Award that recognized a decade of creating and nurturing new musical WRITERS LIVE HERE By making it possible for dozens of musical theatre writers each year to professionally realize their shows in three dimensions with top-notch actors, directors, and designers, NYMF gives authors the essential chance to hone their craft, their projects, and their professional networks. NYMF provides individualized attention to its many participants, including the ten Next Link Project teams who receive dramaturgical support, guidance building a creative and production team, industry networking assistance, and financial subsidies to ensure that their Festival debut is as successful as possible. NYMF 2014 ABOUT NYMF THE NEXT LINK PROJECT One of NYMF’s flagship programs, NYMF’s Next Link Project is open to any writer – produced or unproduced, with or without agency representation. The program receives hundreds of submissions from all over the world each fall, and every script and demo recording are reviewed by numerous members of NYMF’s Reading Committee. A double-blind screening process, designed to ensure it is the quality of the work and not the name of the author that guides our readers, culminates in a select group of finalists being reviewed by a Grand Jury of leading musical theatre artists and producers. Finally, ten shows are awarded production spots in the Festival. Once selected, the writing teams embark on an intense development process in preparation for their Festival productions with help from NYMF every step of the way, including seminars on fundraising, logistics, marketing, and producing led by industry professionals; networking events; dramaturgical support; a $5,000 production subsidy; casting assistance; and the immense marketing and industry exposure that comes with appearing at NYMF. This year’s Grand Jury included Abrams Artists agent Beth Blickers, Tony Award®-winning actor Michael Cerveris, OBIE and Drama Desk Award-winning actress Donna Lynne Champlin, Tony Award and Outer Critics Circle Awardnominated actor Hunter Foster, Tony Awardnominated composer and lyricist Amanda Green, Tony Award-nominated director Thomas Kail, associate producer of the Old Globe Eric Louie, Outer Critics Circle-nominated director and choreographer Josh Prince, and Tony Award and Drama Desk-nominated actor and writer Tony Sheldon. The Next Link Project was vital in the development of our show. With the stellar support from the folks at NYMF and the terrific exposure we gained, our show received a licensing deal, and we as a songwriting team were hired for our next big project.” — Omri Schein & James Olmstead, authors of Gary Goldfarb: Master Escapist, Next Link ‘13 Photo: Krista Buccellato and Jared Loftin in Gary Goldfarb: Master Escapist (Russ Rowland) NYMF’s writer service program empowers ten teams of musical theatre writers each season by providing entrepreneurial training, career networking opportunities, dramaturgical support, and other services culminating in a subsidized production in the Festival. Submissions for the 2015 Next Link Project will be accepted starting August 2014. Visit nymf.org for details on how to submit. TICKETS AT NYMF.ORG OR 212-352-3101 11

NYMF 2014 ABOUT NYMF NEXT BROADWAY SENSATION NYMF’s Next Broadway Sensation (NNBS) combines singing competition and master class to discover the stars of tomorrow and give them their big break today. While receiving coaching from some of musical theatre’s leading artists and hottest emerging writers, performers compete to claim the ultimate prize: their very own solo concert produced by NYMF. Contestants have gone on to appear in numerous Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, including American Idiot, Dogfight, F#%king Up Everything, Hair, Les Miserables, South Pacific, West Side Story, Violet, and more. NNBS auditions are open to any adult performer who has not yet appeared on Broadway. From hundreds of auditionees, 20 contestants are chosen to compete in a series of performance heats, singing for a live audience and a panel of industry judges who provide guidance and feedback to the contestants. Past celebrity judges have included Jonathan Groff, Marc Shaiman, Tom Kitt, Andrea McArdle, Lucy Simon, and Gavin Creel, among others. After the contestants are whittled down to a smaller group of Grand Finalists, each performer is assigned a mentor from among the most prominent new theatre composers. Working directly with those writers, the Finalists perform a special showcase concert sponsored by The ASCAP Foundation. After one final round of competition, a contestant is crowned NYMF’s Next Broadway Sensation and begins planning his or her personal showcase concert, to be held several months later at “Broadway’s Supper Club,” 54 Below! This year, two of our past winners return to NYMF with great new shows! Don’t miss 2012 NNBS Winner Alexis Fishman in Der Gelbe Stern (The Yellow Star) and 2013 NNBS Winner Erica Lustig in This is 30. The search is on for Broadway’s next great performer! My experience with NYMF’s Next Broadway Sensation competition was amazing. Getting to work with composer Ryan Scott Oliver, perform for professionals in the field who judged the competition, and then the euphoria of actually winning? Priceless. And putting on a show at 54 Below was a dream! It was definitely the highlight of my year!” — Erica Lustig, 2013 NNBS Winner Photo: Erica Lustig at 54 Below (Mo Sadek) Auditions will be held in late September for this year’s competition – visit nymf.org for more information.
