Albert Oberdorfer (Mag.phil.) is an Austrian-born teacher who currently teaches English at Chiang Mai University. Albert’s beloved wife, Associate Professor Peninnah Oberdorfer (M.D., Ph.D.) is a pediatrician and lecturer in pediatric infectious diseases at the same university. Self-help or religion is all about how well we are able to keep certain rules and regulations. But if we can’t, then we only have ourselves to blame and will feel guilt and condemnation. Jesus is not like that. The name ‘Jesus’ means savior. He said, “I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.” So Jesus didn’t come to condemn us. He came to help us. He said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” This means that Jesus invites us to link up with Him, so that He can save us. He wants to be our friend who bears our burdens. He wants us to find peace and rest through Him. Come on a journey with us. Let us show you how you can find real help through Jesus Christ by linking up with Him.

What Others have Said about This Book ! Treasure Found — for a while now, I've been looking for a simple, yet comprehensive book that can introduce the New Covenant (our identity, authority and relationship with Abba, Father) to the unbeliever — essentially to relate to the Thai mentality or folks who have no concept of God. Well, I FOUND IT!!!! Thank you Jesus! ! THIS is the book, 'FIND Real Help' by Albert & Peninnah Oberdorfer. ... [T]he book is presented with illustrations, examples, making it REALLY EASY for anybody — who hasn't got any background at all in God — to understand. It takes the reader step by step from the difference between self/help & religion to understanding God's original plan, Adam handing over authority, why Jesus, the finished work, the Holy Spirit, Law vs Grace — about 2[37] pages, in a paperback book. I will find out if this is already in Thai. It's a Must-get, Must-read, Must-give-away ... !! Debbie Kris Chia-Ekner

It’s a wonderful introduction to the Father's love and shows Jesus' grace to new believers in such a clear way! I like the fact that it makes difficult things simple to understand! I have been passing your book around and it helps the Vietnamese new believers a lot. Simplicity and straight to the point! Bravo! Jean-Marc Mignot I have been greatly blessed through reading your ‘Find Real Help’ book that was passed on to me by a dear friend … I am living down in the South of Thailand and delight to share the gospel with people I meet. Thank you for taking time to write your refreshing book that reveals the radical grace of the gospel. In fact I can think of at least 100 people, including many friends, who need to read it. Peter J Moulding We received your book yesterday — thank you — and I have been looking through it today. I am very impressed and I feel it will be a blessing to a great deal of people — me

Introduction This Book is Not about SelfHelp or Religion W HEN PEOPLE READ the title of this book they sometimes ask, “Is this another self-help book?” No, it’s not. So in this book we won’t be telling you what you should do to help yourself. NEW YEAR RESOLUTION THIS YEAR, I will … * loose 10 kg * eat healthier * stop __________ You might have already tried to help yourself by following some kind of self-help teachings. ! Such self-help teachings often say, “If you do good, good things will come

2! Find Real Help your way; but if you do bad, then bad things will happen.” So follow these principles: ‘Do …’, ‘Do …’, ‘Don’t …’, ‘Don’t …’”, and so on. But in this book we won’t teach more about self-help or religion. We won’t give you a list of rules that you need to follow to help yourself. Instead, we’ve good news for you. We will talk about a different system. We will talk about what somebody else has already done for you, and how you can benefit from that. This person is a man called Jesus Christ.

! Introduction! ! ! 3 But you might say, “Jesus Christ? Now this does sound like religion to me.” Yes—that’s what people often think. But it’s actually not true. Jesus Christ has often been grossly and unfairly misrepresented. He actually doesn’t have anything to do with religion. Here’s a story to illustrate what I mean. Life with Jesus and religion is incompatible. “Please, Help Me!” Coober Pedy is the world’s largest opal-mining area. It is located in the desert of central Australia. The township is surrounded by mining fields that are littered with about two hundred thousand (!) dangerous drill holes that are about 1.5 meters wide and up to 30 meters deep. ! Over the years, in their desire to find precious opals, hundreds of people have accidentally fallen down these holes and have had their bones and backs broken, and many have even died.

4! Find Real Help Now suppose a man has tumbled down such a mining hole. For a while, he stoically keeps trying to get out. But there is no way he could ever get out by himself. The hole is too deep. So soon he starts calling out in desperation, “Please—help me, somebody! Help me!” Then a person—Mr. Law— comes along. He stoops down at the hole and calls out to the man below, “Hey you. You should have been more careful. It’s your own fault that you’ve fallen down. Now try to help yourself!” But the man in the hole is stuck. He can’t help himself—no matter what. So all of Mr. Law’s instructions are of no real use to him. !

p. 13

! Introduction! ! ! 5 Then a second person—Mr. Grace—gets to the hole. Looking down he realizes that the man below has no chance to get out by himself. So he quickly gets out a ladder, begins to climb down and says to the man, “Don’t worry. I’m here to rescue you. Just reach out to me. I’ll help you.” And when he has reached the bottom of the hole, he grabs the man’s outstretched arm and then pulls him up out of the hole to safety. Now who of these 2 people could really help the man? You’d say, “Of course, only Mr. Grace. He didn’t just tell him what to do but he really helped him to get out.” So what do the 3 people in this story represent? The man in the hole represents us, Mr. Law represents self-help philosophy and religion, and Mr. Grace represents Jesus.

6! Find Real Help Self-Help and Religion Say, “Help Yourself” Self-help or religious teachers will say to you, “This is what you should do: follow these 10 rules. Then such and such will happen.” And when nothing happens, then they will say, “It’s all your fault. You In self-help and religion the focus is always on you. haven’t perfectly followed rules number 5 and 7.” ! So self-help or religion will always tell you what you should do. But if you rules can’t and keep all their principles, then you only have yourself to blame and will feel guilt and condemnation. (We will look at how the religious system works in more detail in chapters 5 and 10.)

! Introduction! ! ! 7 Jesus Says, “I Will Help You” But Jesus is not like that. He doesn’t have anything to do with self-help or religion! The name ‘Jesus’ means savior. A savior is someone who rescues others. Jesus said, “I came not to judge the world, but to save the world” (John 12:47). So Jesus didn’t come to blame or condemn us. He came to help us. He said Come to me , all you who are weary and burdened, and I will Jesus says, “Link up with me. I will help you.” give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light . — Matthew 11:28-30 A yoke is a piece of wood that connects 2 animals to each other so that they can share the load.
