newsletter ­ 4th feb 2011 from the principal nau mai haere mai tauti mai welcome back to springston for another year we look forward to working with you to ensure that your children have an enjoyable and rewarding year i hope you all managed to find time to relax and rejuvenate after the stresses of 2010 i took a complete break from school and walked the banks peninsula track in the week before christmas and then had three weeks at tata beach doing very little i was more than ready to get back to school our teaching staff all travelled to palmerston north at the end of january to a conference about creativity in learning and there was a lot of excitement about getting back to school and putting ideas into practice the school roll on wednesday was 172 this is considerably higher than our starting roll has been for many years and assures the school a consistent level of both staffing and funding it is anticipated that we will grow to around 195 by the end of the year thank you for the time taken to prepare for the goal setting interviews on tuesday teachers appreciate the thought you put into what you would like to see happen for your child this year there is quite a lot of information in this first newsletter for the year so please do persevere to the end new faces this year we welcome simon dakers to our teaching staff simon is teaching our year 7/8 class and we are delighted that he is starting his teaching career in our school amanda graves amanda joins our staff to leadership release for our principal each thursday provide deputy we also extend a warm welcome to the many families who are new to the springstson school community we ve got the power our learning theme for this year is power term 1 has a health and physical education curriculum focus on what helps us to be powerful learners cyber safety information evening you may have read in the press over the holidays an article about children s skill development in short it concluded that more children can use a computer a cell phone and an mp3 player than can tie shoelaces make themselves a snack or play card games there is no doubt that we live in a digital world with this in mind we have updated our school s ict procedures and will soon be sending out important new documents to be signed by parents and students regarding the need to be good cyber citizens teachers will be shown the new material shortly and students will then be having lessons in class appropriate to their year level being a good cyber citizen is about more than keeping safe online and with this in mind allana and carol will be holding a session for parents at school on wednesday 2 march 7:00 8:30 pm please fill in the reply slip at the end of this newsletter and return by thursday 10 february.

school bus clarification route 7625 thank you to the parents who have returned the requested information about children travelling on this route the school is required to hold this information to ensure that children who have an entitlement to travel have priority the moe requirements have not changed in any way we simply have not gathered this information in the past receipt of this letter does not mean that your child is no longer able to travel on the bus if you have not yet returned the form please do so as early as possible next week if you have any questions or concerns about the ministry regulation please do not hesitate to give me a call can you help us if you are interested in helping us in any of the following ways please complete a reply slip at the end of the newlsetter and return to the office · reading tutors we are very keen to utilise parents as reading tutors in our junior classes children really benefit from having that extra bit of one-on-one assistance in class we are able to provide training in how best to assist young readers so please let us know if this is something you would be keen to do numeracy project if you would like to know more about the numeracy project operating in schools either with a view to helping out in classes or for your own personal interest then we would like to hear from you school timetable the structure of the school day remains as follows 9.00 ­ 10.40 learning block 1 10.40 ­ 11.00 playtime 11.00-12.00 learning block 2 12.00-12.30 lunch break 12.30 ­ 1.30 learning block 3 1.30-2.00 playtime 2.00-3.00 learning block 4 this timetable is known to benefit both learning and behaviour bible in schools this programme will get underway for the year at the beginning of march and will again take place on a thursday at 11 a.m if you wish your child to take part in this programme please complete the permission slip at the end of the newsletter only children with a returned slip will be able to take part coming home with this newlsletter is the information about the triathlon next friday and two other public notices ng mihi ki a koutou katoa liz weir principal important dates february 11 springston school triathlon whole school assembly 2pm 16 senior swimming sports halswell 23 board of trustees meeting 7pm march 2 cyber safety meeting 7pm 4 whole school assembly rm 5 16 craft day 25 whole school assembly rm 1 april 15 end of term 1 whole school assembly rm 6 · · we need assistance from someone who is handy with a sewing machine we have a large piece of fabric to be made into a `green screen for filming in front of it requires seams and some eyelets and cord rather like a blind to allow us to mount it on the wall and roll it up.
