baseball2_layout 1 1/31/11 8:05 pm page 8 the eagle coaches success at ntcc after ntcc bill griffin 1992-94 the founder of the northeast texas community college program is the legendary bill griffin griffin began his coaching career at panola junior college in 1957 taking four teams to the college world series and winning the 1969 national championship griffin then moved to howard college and won several conference championships and the 1991 njcaa national championship he is the only coach in the history of the njcaa to win national titles at two different schools griffin came to northeast texas community college in 1992 and started the baseball program he coached the eagles for three seasons before retiring he then served as the athletics director for ntcc a two-time njcaa coach of the year recipient griffin has also been inducted into the njcaa baseball hall of fame and the american baseball coaches association hall of fame griffin is married to melba lagrone griffin of carthage and now lives in college station texas bill griffin s exploits career record 1,111 wins/446 losses ranks 4th in njcaa in all-time wins 1969 1991 njcaa national champions 1979 njcaa runner-up 1963 and 1970 njcaa college world series participant 1969 njcaa coach of the year 1976 coach of the united states baseball team which was the beginning of trying to get baseball as an olympic sport 19 times won coach of the year honors for the conference numerous players signed with universities and played professional baseball 1983 inductee to the njcaa hall of fame member of the american baseball coaches hall of fame 8

harrington one of just two coaches with 200-or-more wins as the bobcats skipper with prentice in second at 222 harrington reached the milestone in his sixth season while prentice got his 200th in the fifth game of his seventh season as head coach of the bobcats in 2004,texas state defeated no 16 texas a&m during the regular season and played 14 games against ranked opponents finishing with a 3226 overall mark and a third-place 16-10 record in the southland the 2003 campaign was a successful one as the bobcats finished second overall in the league just one game behind regular season champion lamar texas state posted a 30-28 overall record and a 19-7 southland mark with harrington guided the team to wins over defending nation champion texas as well as 2004 preseason top 25 pick baylor in 2002 harrington led the bobcats to a 36-24 record the second most wins at the time posted in a season by a texas state baseball team in 17 years his club collected 10 wins against nationally ranked teams including a 2-0 shutout in austin against the eventual national champion texas longhorns the win was a monumental moment for harrington who claimed his 300th-career collegiate victory with the win on april 23 2002 at his alma mater fifty-five athletes have been named to the all-southland conference teams under harrington s watch nine named to the south-central regional team and most recently three given all-american honors prior to taking command of texas state s baseball program harrington served as the head coach in 1999 at blinn junior college in brenham texas in one season with the buccaneers harrington guided the team to a 36-22 record and advanced to the region xiv junior college championship harrington began his coaching career at the university of texas where he served as a student and graduate assistant from 1988-1991 he then moved to jonesboro arkansas as an assistant coach at arkansas state harrington helped the indians establish several school records including most wins in a single-season in 1994 arkansas state won the 1994 sun belt conference championship and made an appearance in the ncaa regional tournament in his playing days harrington was a two-year letter winner at the university of texas where he played in the longhorn infield under collegiate coaching legend cliff gustafson harrington was a member of texas teams that advanced to the college world series in omaha nebraska in 1984 1985 and 1987 he also served as team captain on the 1987 longhorn squad as a player and coach harrington has been a part of collegiate baseball teams that have advanced to postseason play in 23 of 25 seasons harrington is married to the former leila baggett the couple resides in san marcos texas with their three daughters melaine emma and alle the head coach of the northeast texas community college s national championship squad in 1996 ty harrington has continued his successful coaching run now at texas state harrington was the njcaa coach of the year after guiding the eagles to a 48-18 record and the 1996 title in his four years at the helm of ntcc harrington recorded a solid .705 winning percentage winning 165 of 234 games while at ntcc harrington also assisted in the development of an academic accountability system that resulted in a team gradepoint average above 3.0 for three consecutive years since the year 2000 harrington has produced a great baseball team for texas state but in 2009 harrington went beyond great and turned out the greatest harrington led the bobcats to a 41-17 overall season marking the most wins in a single-season for the baseball program texas state finished 24-7 against southland conference opponents en route to their first-ever slc championship title harrington garnered the 2009 league coach of the year honor after the successful run but texas state was not finished with the season with its stellar overall record,texas state received an at-large bid to the ncaa regional championship tournament another first of its kind as the no 2 seed to compete in austin alongside 2009 college world series contender texas and army and boston college in 2010 the bobcats went 38-22 as they advanced to the slc tournament championship game as harrington enters his 12th season at the helm of the bobcat baseball program he looks to continue with his success harrington sports a 375-274 overall record the most wins ever recorded by a coach in the texas state baseball program during the 2009 season texas state opened southland conference play against texas a&m-corpus christi and a 7-4 decision over the islanders handed harrington his 300th win at texas state a decade of baseball in the harrington era has brought about many milestones in 2008 he led texas state to his eighth 30-plus win season and coached two players selected in the major league draft both thomas field and mike hart played three years for harrington and in their tenure helped rewrite the texas state record books field scored 168 career-runs for the all-time record and hit seven triples in 2008 a single-season record in itself on the mound hart recorded 89 strikeouts a team-best for the 08 season and with a three-year total of 227 made him the no 3 all-time career strikeout leader at texas state in 2007 harrington coached his squad to a 37-23 finish a then-best mark of his career texas state opened the season with an 8-3 win over oklahoma and returned to bobcat field for a 3-2 upset of no 1 rice in front of a record crowd in 2006 texas state defeated three teams that made appearances in the 2005 college world series texas nebraska and baylor and in 2005 9

baseball2_layout 1 1/31/11 8:05 pm page 10 joe almarez joe almarez was at the start of the northeast texas community college program assisting the legendary bill griffin almarez is now in his third year as a cross-checker in the scouting department for the st louis cardinals almarez was previously the head coach for the johnson city cardinals a minor league affiliate for the st louis cardinals cross checker st louis cardinals almarez replaced dan radison as manager and was joined by sid monge who will take over the duties as pitching coach for the cardinals radison who led the 2006 squad to a .500 record is currently the minor league hitting instructor for the st louis organization monge will replace long time pitching coach al holland who has taken over the same duties for the cardinals class a affiliate in batavia new york almarez managed in the appalachian league leading bluefield orioles to the 2001 league championship he also managed the aberdeen iron birds in 2002 and 2003 almarez also served as a scout covering west texas for the orioles while also coordinating the orioles scouting in mexico prior to joining baltimore almarez managed for three years in the arizona diamondbacks system almarez also guided the 1999 missoula osprey to a pioneer league championship after directing the lethbridge black diamonds to the league championship series in 1998 todd shelton an assistant on the northeast texas community college national title squad in 1996,todd shelton now is in his fourth season as the head coach of the panola ponies in 2010 the ponies finished 32-19 and were ranked in the njcaa polls in 2009 he led the ponies to a 39-17 record while finishing as the co-champions in the region xiv eastern conference and earning a playoff berth in region xiv.the ponies were ranked as high as seventh njcaa polls he has an overall record of 104-59 shelton is a 1986 graduate of conroe high head coach panola cc school he received his bachelors degree from oklahoma state and later went on to earn a masters degree from cumberland university shelton attended and played baseball at mclennan community college before going on to play for the legendary coach gary ward at oklahoma state university as a catcher for the cowboys shelton had the opportunity to play in two ncaa regional championships and the 1990 ncaa college world series national championship game following the 1990 college world series shelton signed and played one season with the cleveland indians he began his coaching career at oklahoma state as an assistant before serving as the first assistant at the national association of intercollegiate athletics naia powerhouse cumberland university cumberland advanced to the 1993 naia college world series shelton returned to oklahoma state in 1994 as an assistant helping set the stage for the cowboys 1996 college world series berth shelton became the head baseball coach at eastern oklahoma state in 1997 and led the team to its first njcaa college world series in 2001 shelton stayed at eastern oklahoma until 2004 from 2005 to 2007 shelton was on the staff of oral roberts university during that time his teams have participated in two ncaa regionals and the 2006 ncaa super regional keith vorhoff after spending three seasons as an assistant coach with the northeast texas community college program keith vorhoff is in his fourth season as a volunteer assistant coach with the kentucky wildcats vorhoff spent three 2004-2005-2006 seasons on the staff at ntcc vorhoff handled northeast s base-running philosophies resulting in a school record for stolen bases vorhoff also worked with the pitchers outfielders and hitters vorhoff spent the 2007 season working as a volunteer assistant kentucky volunteer assistant with the southeastern louisiana university baseball program working mainly with the pitching staff.vorhoff helped improve the staff era from 5.34 in 2006 to 4.07 in 2007 vorhoff managed the scouting reports for future opponents handled all the video needs for the program and assisted with organization and planning of camps vorhoff has served as a summer league coach for two excellent clubs including a current head coach position for the chillicothe mudcats vorhoff also served as the assistant coach for the anchorage bucs in the alaska summer collegiate baseball league coaching 19 players selected in the mlb draft vorhoff is a 2004 honors graduate of missouri valley college with a degree in exercise science with a concentration on health fitness and sports management vorhoff also spent one season at arkansas state before going to missouri valley and helping the vikings win a conference title he also played two seasons at pratt kan community college earning all-conference and all-region honors vorhoff was named as a naia academic allamerican his senior season upon graduation vorhoff worked two seasons with his alma matter as a student assistant coach handling pitcher outfielders and assisting in player development 10

alabama mississippi and tennessee st julien spent the 2007 season scouting for the st louis cardinals organization st julien who was at ntcc for the 20042006 seasons served as the eagles pitching coach and recruiting coordinator area scout toronto blue jays prior to his stint at ntcc he coached at pratt kan community college and worked with several summer collegiate leagues he led the kearney mo river bandits to two national baseball congress regional championships and two nbc world series appearances in 2004 st julien served as the pitching coach for the lake havasu city heat as they advanced to the nbc world series a member of southeastern oklahoma state s naia college world series squad st julien helped the team earn the nation s number one ranking and a 49-11 record he also played at louisiana-lafayette and pratt kan community college following his collegiate days st julien pitched for the meridian brakemen of the big south professional baseball league before working for the new york mets organization in port st lucie fla and kingsport tenn while on the pratt cc coaching staff he worked with 12 players who were selected in the mlb draft five academic all-america selections and a total of 43 players who signed to play at four-year institutions josh reynolds after getting his coaching start at northeast texas community college josh reynolds continues to develop all-conference pitchers he is now helping his pitching staff rewrite evansville baseball history ue has produced four all-missouri valley conference pitchers in reynolds two years which ranks as the second-highest total among league schools relief pitchers tom heithoff twice corey davisson 2010 and j.r carbonell 2009 have all earned all-mvc pitching honors while davisson tied ue s single-season records for both appearances 33 and winning percentage 9-1 .900 last year heithoff also quickly emerged as one of the top closers in school his pitching coach evansville tory recording 18 saves in two years to rank second all-time in school history staff-wise the purple aces have also improved with reynolds serving as pitching coach ue has dropped its team earned-run average by over a full point over the last two seasons the purple aces have gone from ranking 250th nationally in hits allowed in 2008 to 106th in the country in 2010 reynolds himself excelled on the mound at ncaa division ii power university of central missouri formerly central missouri state from 1998 through 2000 reynolds was a two-time miaa and ncaa ii all-america pitcher for the mules while setting a school record with 32 career victories in just three years reynolds was selected in the third round of the 2000 major league baseball draft by the new york mets he ranked among the school s career leaders in victories innings pitched 248.0 and strikeouts 193 reynolds still ranks among the mules top five in each category and was inducted into the school s athletics hall of fame in 2007 reynolds pitched professionally in the new york mets san diego padres and boston red sox organizations he posted a career record of 21-15 with a 4.14 era as both a starter and a reliever while posting a near three-to-one strikeout-to-walk ratio 211 strikeouts to 72 walks in the minor leagues reynolds came to ue in 2008 after spending three seasons at kansas state and one year as pitching coach at ntcc in 2007 reynolds earned his bachelor s degree in social sciences from kansas state in 2006 reynolds and his wife ashleigh reside in evansville kirk mcconnell kirk mcconnell joins the university of mississippi after four seasons at northeast texas community college where he has served as the recruiting coordinator and coached outfielders the base runners and served as the hitting instructor mcconnell will coach the infielders and assist with the hitters at ole miss at northeast texas mcconnell helped lead an offense that hit over .315 and posted more than 100 stolen bases in each of his four seasons the eagle offense averaged 129 stolen bases a season during his time with northeast texas and is coming of a 2010 season that saw the team lead region xiv in hitting with a .342 average and runs scored twenty-five players have signed with ncaa division i schools since mcconnell arrived at ntcc several more garnered attention for their performance on the diamond including three all-america selections four all-region selections and 15 all-conference selections volunteer assistant coach mississippi prior to joining the ntcc staff mcconnell worked at southern arkansas university where he held the position of hitting coach in the fall of 2006 mcconnell s duties included overseeing hitters and assisting with outfielders base running and recruiting six mulerider hitters would go on to earn all-conference honors that season while one earned all-region and ncaa allamerican honors after completing his playing career mcconnell joined the ncaa division i coaching ranks at missouri state university he served as an assistant coach for one season working with bear hitters outfielders and base runners while at missouri state mcconnell worked with nine players who would be selected in the major league baseball amateur draft including two first round picks eight all-conference players and one usa national team member msu finished the 2006 campaign runner-up in both the regular season and missouri valley conference tournament an all-state and two-time all-conference performer at magnolia high mcconnell began his collegiate career at the university of arkansas where he was a freshman all-american honorable mention outfielder helping the razorbacks to two regional appearances and a super regional appearance as a two-year letterman mcconnell then transferred to missouri state university where he was an all-conference and all-region performer mcconnell was also named bears most valuable player during his senior season as team captain for the bears following his collegiate career mcconnell played professionally for two seasons with the river city rascals of the frontier professional baseball league mcconnell spent two summers as head coach of the columbia angels ark with american legion baseball leading the angels to two district championships and one state championship during those stints mcconnell saw nine players move on to the collegiate ranks and one to the professional ranks mcconnell earned his bachelor of arts in history from missouri state university in may 2006 mcconnell and his wife hannah are expecting their first child.
