worldmags consider stay in touch with us on twitter @maclife what s next in 2011 pple i m impressed as i write this it s been a little more than a month since ios 4.2 hit ipads everywhere pointlessly converting the orientation-lock toggle into a mute switch provoking rants far and wide across the applesphere but i ve just checked out the beta version of 4.3 and one of the main upgrades right there in the general pane of settings is use side switch to with options for lock rotation or mute there s really only one reply i can think of bravo in a crankier moment i might ve opted for some should ve done it that way the first time grumbling but here at mac|life hq we re all in generous moods as we put the wraps on our 50th issue that kind of milestone gets me thinking about where apple will take us over mac|life s next 50 issues and the ways i hope it stays as nimble as it was when it fixed that ipad toggle switch first up the evolution of multi-touch is there another mac interface on the way after the magic trackpad i hope so apple often has a lead foot when it comes to accelerating technological change and it clearly sees the person-machine interface as an important profitable frontier it ll be fascinating to see what the lion os brings in this area and beyond i m also rooting for some serious cloud-based action especially with my music but primarily i hope apple does some serious renovation in its software portfolio ical mobileme and itunes all need overhauls and big overdue features like wireless syncing of itunes libraries just need to happen on the hardware side apple must be looking long and hard at near-field communications nfc and flexible displays and both technologies are tantalizing in their potential for sweeping changes in how we use tech just imagine an ipad a that folds up to fit in your pocket or an iphone that uses nfc to become your bus pass credit card and more but i m most curious about the innovations we don t expect i d love to see a killer new mac pro and as lovely as macbooks are their form factor seems ripe for reinvention maybe an air with a touchscreen display that swivels to flatten converting it into an ipad of sorts and let s not forget the easy little things that apple really needs to deliver this year a front cam for the ipad usb 3.0 in macs and a robust iphone antenna all should be sure things over the course of 2011 whatever this year holds for us i have no doubt that it ll be fascinating apple s never been a company that rests on its laurels in the year ahead we won t either we ll be constantly working on bettering this mag creating more apps and whatever just imagine an ipad that folds up to fit in your pocket else you need from us in fact we re starting up a new way to connect with you to find out exactly what that is reader meet-ups check out p17 for the details and if you can t make it i hope you ll find us on twitter or facebook to grab one of our nifty 50th issue t-shirts or you can just ping me at paul@maclife.com lastly the news that steve jobs is taking another medical leave broke as we wrapped this issue and the only thing to say about that is we extend him our best wishes for a speedy recovery no 3 on p35 says everything else paul curthoys editor-in-chief overheard at mac|life this month got back to the hotel and realized my foot was bleeding from walking around washed the blood off and went back out robbie is ces hardcore clarus the dogcow is my bertrand serlet ray during the sometimes-tense negotiations involved in creating this month s cover story it s only fair that a guy with muscles like these helps out sometimes nic after selflessly volunteering to grab robin s layouts from the printer it s the swag at sundance that s infamous instead of ces s tension balls and totes it s prada parkas and d&g moon boots i ll be happy to grab a `focus on film pin robin while packing her bags for park city firefox is like the bad-boy boyfriend that s really hot but is always screwing up flo attempting to come up with an analogy to describe her relationship with her browsers you know what i bet woz would want it this way susie during our marathon discussions to rank the top 50 reasons we love apple p22 regarding nos 21 and 22 worldmags 8 mar· 11 maclife.com

share letter of the month it doesn t take a genius worldmags your opinions r ants r aves not so futuristic i was fully onboard with the macbook air until i found out it had no usb 3.0 from a company known for innovation and promoting cutting edge technology i found this very disappointing why not usb 3.0 i can t think of a single good reason dan coplan we can t either for a company so futurefocused apple s slowness to adopt usb 3.0 is a big missed boat we can only hope that they have something bigger and better planned but we re starting to wonder if they just blew it on this one nic as a long-time macintosh certified technician at firsttech computer an apple specialist in minneapolis i have a few comments about 10 fifteenminute mac how-tos feb/11 on p34 you mention a trip to the genius bar apple s own surveys show that independent apple specialist dealers consistently provide better-quality service than the retail-store genius bar perhaps i m wrong but i don t recall any mentions in your magazine of places other than the genius bar to bring a mac to be fixed you may be implying to the readership that that s their only option when they need service create more createmore.com is an apple specialist near at&t park in san francisco you can find other apple specialists around the country at applespecialist.com thanks i ve been a subscriber since macaddict #5 tom schmidt you re absolutely right there s no plainer way to put it independent apple stores took care of us all before the days of the apple store and the folks who work there are some of the most knowledgeable experts around we have huge respect for their powers we ll begin phrasing it differently in the mag and we encourage everyone to check them out tom thanks for pointing that out and for reading our mag for so long paul palm we ll always carry a torch for your desktop software more torch-carrying as an author and a speaker i depend on my calendar heavily and i chuckled at paul s palm reference consider feb/11 p6 while i own four macs and countless ipods i still need my palm tx in fact i even bought a backup for when my present one fails ical does not come close especially usb 3.0 mac users most wanted back to the future i like your design for the ipad 3d today s magic tomorrow s reality jan/11 p26 but what if it could have a dual use as a removable screen in an imac you could pop it in the middle since it would have no edge and there would be a screen wrapped around it this way you would still get the full 24-inch screen size and the ipad could sync and charge jason s kelley we have a hard time imagining how an ipad could snap into an imac s display without leaving visible distracting lines but hey the future s smarter than the present right it s an interesting thought and what we particularly like about it is the integration of macs and idevices here s hoping susie with the search function or spotlight on the iphone which is nowhere as in-depth or strong also it only goes back for a year while palm searches everything and any year i want to give up the palm but there s no better replacement maybe one day apple will make ical a little better hal becker and that will be a very good day we ve managed to part ways with our palms but the palm desktop software has a lot to teach ical every day and twice on sundays that said the iphone hardware and all its apps smoke every palm we ever used and so we re not too forlorn but we share your hope that big ical improvements are on the way ray applespecialist.com can point you to a specialist near you once you start dreaming might as well dream even bigger worldmags 10 mar·11 maclife.com
