Dear Friends: After 2,734 miles through Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas, the Lord’s blessings far exceed the odometer reading. It was a joy to have Steve, Rebekah, and AbiNoelle traveling with Terry and myself as we returned to our former office in Dallas. We also had several other important stops—good to see you Debbie!—which made for a great, but quick visit to Dallas. From Texas we headed north to Frederick, Oklahoma where The Voice in the Wilderness founder, Dr. J. Royce Thomason, is buried. For years this has been a depressed area now facing a serious drought and job loss. We stopped in at the florist where Bro. Royce spent a good bit of social time, and Kim helped us with some flowers for the grave. After some time of reflection at the cemetery, it was on to Camp Meeting (top right) and a church meeting in Arkansas. It was an honour to preach four times Tornado Devastation and hear nineteen sermons by some of our Lord’s choicest servants. Thank you Bro. Burks and Bro. Ryder for this great opportunity. (Continued on page 28) Please consider a one-time gift, monthly support or an offering to help with the Venezuela projects and missions opportunities. Thanks for your consideration. Sermon OF THE MONTH S tanding Jeremiah 6:13-17 13  on TOP For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them every one is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely. 14  They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace. 15  Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore they shall fall among them that fall: at the time that I visit them they shall be cast down, saith the Lord. Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein. Also I set watchmen over you, saying, Hearken to the sound of the trumpet. But they said, We will not hearken. 16  17  We have chosen “Standing on Top” as our 2014 theme for The Voice in the Wilderness Ministries. It was my privilege to preach this message at the Arkansas Camp Meeting. For just a brief overview of Jeremiah’s ministry note the following: Jeremiah records God’s messages in the closing days of Judah, as well as, prophecies concerning the Messiah. Jeremiah’s commitment and deep spirituality is so very evident. He often wept over the messages he had to deliver to his people. It’s interesting in Jeremiah 16:2 that with his deep commitment came great sacrifice when God commanded him not to marry. Some have called Jeremiah the prophet of doom. He repeatedly warned of judgment. For Judah, this was inevitable. But there was great consolation as well. Jeremiah’s prophecies constituted the final gathering of God’s people for the Messiah’s everlasting reign. 4•The Voice in the Wilderness - Spring 2014 Quarterly Edition

n In Jeremiah 6:16, Judah’s refusal to walk the ways of true righteousness (The Old Paths) meant destruction. For decades, I’ve seen the sowing and reaping of people I thought lived in ignorance. Surely they do not understand God’s Word. They have no discernment. There choices, one after another, resulted in bad, simply because they made bad choices. But I’ve lived and preached long enough to see a generation produce a generation that says, “We will not walk therein.” Sadly, these people have posted and plastered all around the world on FaceBook and social networking their utter refusal to walk in The Old Paths. Now they will tell you, “I’m free at last,” “I’m still standing on The Old Paths.” “I’m just no longer a slave to some preacher’s rules, or a 1500’s hymnbook, nor outdated standards.” “I’m on this journey you see.” “I have the best relationship with Jesus ever!” By the way, the Jesus they talk about is the Jesus they want Him to be. They are, “Doing” but they are not, “Being.” Those who brazenly declare, “I will not walk therein,” have created a Jesus to fit their lifestyle and choices. “But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.” (II Corinthians 11:34) The apostle Paul makes it clear that there is another Jesus, another spirit, and another gospel. One pastor I’ve known for years stated to me, “ I want you to know, I still stand on the King James Bible. I just use some other versions on my powerpoint to make some passages a little more clear.” Once the camel gets his nose in the tent, soon the whole camel will be in the tent. When the ESV or the NIV or some eclectic hodge-podge of Bible versions becomes your source for discovering the TRUTH, you no longer have an absolute authority or anchor for your soul. You or the “higher critic” is now the authority. Jeremiah records in chapter 17:15, “Behold, they say unto me, Where is the word of the Lord? Let it come now.” They defy The Word of the More on @TheVoice_NC or visit www.thevoiceinthewilderness.org •5

Lord. They have become hostile and sarcastic simply because I stand where they once stood. They now call the King James Bible, “your Bible.” They moved and now shake one of those modern versions in my face saying, “Where is the word? God has not judged us. That old path, King James Bible is outdated.” Thus, it is up to textual critics and countless versions to ascertain the truth. Jeremiah was met with such difficulty, defiance, and discouragement, but he said, “I have been a pastor following the Lord.” By the way, dear brother, don’t get weary in well doing. Don’t prevaricate and capitulate to the nay-sayers, no-seeums, and nit-wits that persist in their defiance, just as they did in Jeremiah’s day. Note the following outline: I. Stand ye II. See ye III. Seek ye (Ask for The Old Paths) “Stand ye in the ways” Praise the Lord when I got saved it was in the midst of solid, Holy Ghost, Bible preaching! Shortly after I was saved, I joined a church that had a weekly Bible Memory Program for adults and youth. Every Sunday evening each participant met with an adult hearer to quote the Scripture verses memorized for that week. There was at least one verse per day to be memorized. If you were successful in reciting your verses correctly, there was a small gift at the end of each month, each quarter, and finally a certificate of completion at the end of the year. Our church also had a Disciple and Training Class to prepare believers for ministry and service in the local church. Our pastor taught a Soul Winning Class that instructed each student how to share their faith and lead an individual to Christ. These are the “ways” I grew in the Lord and faith. “Stand ye in the ways and see…” The babe in Christ could “see the ways to stand” with the Saviour and steer clear of sin, Satan, and self. I am forever thankful that my local church gave me opportunities to “see the ways” a believer should live. “Seek ye” (Ask for The Old Paths”) It’s not some mystical hocus-pocus. The Lord wants to give us, “The 6•The Voice in the Wilderness - Spring 2014 Quarterly Edition

good way, the godly way, His grace way!” Sin, self, and Satan will take you a different way—a different walk. Now look again at Jeremiah 6:16, “Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways.” This is an abiding, the place for self to be, and a presenting of self in surrender to God’s way. We are to stand or abide in Christ. Then Jeremiah says see or behold. This is the looking unto Jesus the Author and Finisher of our faith. And then we are to seek or to ask for The Old Paths. There is an earnest desire to commune and worship the Lord. Stand, See, and Seek is a deeply spiritual—self-abiding in Christ. Looking and longing to Him for the hunger of our soul. This is an earnest desire that can only be satisfied in Christ and Christ alone. Jeremiah describes this as the good way that is rest for your soul. This is the good way, and the good Word living in and through us. However, the priest and prophets have dealt falsely Jeremiah said. Today, they have tickled ears. They placed a Band-Aid on the leprosy on this generation trying to Tweet, FaceBook, and rock-and-roll worship their way into a new age spirituality. Some time back, I was talking to an evangelist that many would know. We discussed how the church and world have changed over the span of our ministry. He stated his preaching had not changed. Yes, God’s Truth does not change, thus The Old Paths; however, God’s Word is not old fashion or out of date. Jesus addressed the woman at the well, the lawyer, and the hypocrites with truth applied to their need and time. Peter and Paul were relevant to Jew and Gentile respectively. The Old Paths apply to FaceBook, Twitter, Social Networking just as it does to the tribal in India. The Old Paths are not synonymous with antiquity or the way its always been done. There is an old way that wicked men have trodden down that leads to death and destruction. We are told to ask for The Old Paths, where is the good way, not the world’s way. Now let’s consider the question, “What are The Old Paths?” I. The Old Paths of Prayer Warriors II. The Old Paths of Preaching His Word III. The Old Paths of Personal Witness “The Old Paths of Prayer Warriors” I learned about prayer early on in my walk of faith. door. Two young men in white shirts and ties introduced themselves asking if they could come in and have a brief Bible Study. Of course, having just trusted Christ as my Saviour, I was very interested in the Bible. Inviting them into the living room, they began to talk about the Lord and scripture. Shortly into the conversation the name Joseph Smith came up and some very strange notions. Being young in the Lord, it seemed as if the Holy Spirit raised some red flags. Now, one of my high school buddies had invited me to the Christian Camp where I got saved. It so happened he had a key to the church where we attended, and we had made a practice of going to the church and praying together at the altar. You can imagine, two older teenage boys making a competition out of who could pray the loudest and most eloquent prayer! That was my original introduction to prayer. There we would kneel at the altar and pray at the top of our lungs. So now, these two white shirt and tie fellows seated in my living room finish up their little Bible Study and ask me if we could pray. I said, sure. They ask if I would like to pray, and I said, sure. I slipped off the little foot-stool I was seated on and kneeling there began to pray at the top of my lungs just as my friend and I would at the church altar. “Dear Heavenly Father, In the name of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit,” and so on and so forth I preceded in my very boisterous prayer. When I concluded in the name of Jesus, Amen, and looked up those two white shirted and tie adorned young fellows were escorting themselves out the front door. I’ve never heard from them since. It has been a joy for over four decades to see the Lord answer a multitude of prayers. We are told to ask for The Old Paths. God will hear and answer unless we say, we will not walk therin. “One of the most important documents a man ever signs is his will. I can tell better what a man had in his heart by reading his will than I can by reading his obituary. His obituary tells the world what his friends thought of him; his will reveals what he had in his heart.” - A. M. Vollmer For as (a man) thinketh in his heart, so is he- Proverbs 23:7. Out of (the heart) are the issues of life - Proverbs 4:23. “The Old Paths of Preaching His Word” There is a famine in the land for faithful, old time anointed preaching, “Not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever” – I Peter 1:23. The “…word of the Lord endureth forever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.” I Peter 1:25 Chris McCandless starved to death in the bush of Alaska breaking his mom and dad’s heart. I came across this story in the 1990s while doing ministry in Alaska. There are so many examples of life illustrated in the seemingly rebellious demise of the young Virginian man, Chris McCandless. Chris went into the wilderness blaming his parents and others for a lot of things. He made bad choices and with food all around him, even in his stomach, Chris died of starvation. Subsequent investigation reveals a fungus or mold grows on legumes during summer months in wet conditions. A potent alkaloid forms and coats seeds. Ranchers and veterinarians know this, “swainsonine,” as a killer of livestock. The toxin inhibits the body from metabolizing food and no matter how much the victim eats, starvation is inevitable. The seed is corrupt and toxic. Food is there but coated with poison. Now watch this: We are not, “born again of corruptible seed” – I Peter 1:23. A healthy body with adequate stores of proteins and sugars can excrete these toxins through urination. But Chris, living in the wilderness, was mal-nourished. Eating corrupted seed, Chris starved to death. The Bible says, “…desire the sincere milk of the word that ye may grow thereby.” – I Peter 2:22. “…strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age…” – Hebrews 5:14. “…sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb…” – Psalm 19:10. Herein are our spiritual proteins and sugars to molecularly bind the world’s poisons and purge away deadly toxins. Wescott, Hort, Nestle-Aland, Critical Text, along with writers like Brian Edwards and D.A. Carson clearly state their position. They have and are discovering and ascertaining as precisely as possible, what reading of any particular passage is closest to the original. Listen to me, as kindly as possible, I do not have corrupt seed that needs to be fixed by man’s scientific method of higher criticism. Nor do I need some scholarly, More on @TheVoice_NC or visit www.thevoiceinthewilderness.org •9

evolutionist, German rationalist or an individual that does not even believe in the infallibility of Scripture to ascertain truth for me. God says His Word is settled – Psalm 119:89. The Words of the Lord are pure Words, preserved from this generation forever – Psalm 12:6,7. His Words shall not pass away – Matt. 24:35. Plainly put, The Old Paths is preaching the pure, powerful, preserved Word of God. Jeremiah tells us in chapter 36, verse 27, “…the King had burned the roll…” then in verse 28 he’s told to write the former words. No matter how men attack the Word of God, God has promised to preserve His Word, and God cannot lie. So here is the essence of Old Paths Preaching. 1. The elemental Truths relating to conversion, commitment, and the church. 2. The exercising and experiential and edifying Truth of God lived out daily. This is the GROW, GO AND GLOW of the Gospel. 3. The eschatological Truth of God’s Word - “Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.” “He hath made us kings and priests” Rev. 1:3,6. As a watchman on the wall, The Old Paths preacher has a responsibility to clearly sound out all the Word of God. That Old Paths preaching includes: 1. The Biblical account of creation. 2. Faith in the inspired, infallible, preserved Word of God. 3. The virgin birth of Christ. 4. The deity of Christ. 5. The vicarious, substitutionary death of Christ. 6. The bodily resurrection and return of Christ. 7. A literal heaven and hell. 8. Salvation by grace, through faith in Christ and Christ alone. 9. Separation from the world, flesh and devil. “Lastly is The Old Paths of Personal Witness” “Ye shall be witnesses.” Jesus said, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” It has been said, if you ain’t fishin’, you ain’t followin’. Over these many years of ministry, it has been a joy to sow and reap, to labour and to enter into their labours. To plant, to water, but it is always God that giveth the increase. From pulpit preaching, to door knocking, to the bus ministry, to hospital visitation and the mission field—India, Mexico, the Philippines, Venezuela, we have followed and I declare, Jesus Saves. 10•The Voice in the Wilderness - Spring 2014 Quarterly Edition

The brother of a man in our church was unsaved. Many were praying for him. Donnie lived in a mobile home up a dirt path in the middle of a cornfield. I went to see Donnie several times, but he would not let us in. On one occasion, probably $100 worth of heat went out the door while we stood on the porch trying to tell Donnie about Jesus. It got to the point, if Donnie saw headlights coming up the path he would drop on the floor, turn the TV off, and lay there silently until we left. Eventually, I managed to get up with Donnie and establish a weekly Bible Study. Low and behold his rock band began to take off, and the Bible Study was dropped for practice time. Donnie ask me the question, “If I get saved will I have to give up my rock music?” I said, “Donnie what do you think?” His reply was, “I will have to give up my rock music, so I can’t get saved.” But the pure seed of God’s Word had been sown. Long story short, Donnie got saved, and the next day his wife called my wife and she too was saved. The Old Paths includes the Gospel of Jesus Christ and lives changed through His saving grace. In the opening of this message we read from Jeremiah 6:13-17. I’d like to close with this final admonition. Take a careful look at the conditions in Jeremiah’s day. Here are some words and phrases to give additional thought to: 1. Covetousness – They were given to covetousness. Vs 13 2. Dealing Falsely – From prophet to priest they all dealt falsely. Vs 13 3. A False Peace – They healed and said peace, peace; when there is no peace. Vs 14 4. Abomination – Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush. Vs 15 – This word abomination is used to describe things that God hates. Here are some references to follow-up on: • Lev. 18:22,23,24 • Lev. 20:13 • Deut. 7:25; 18:9,12 • Deut. 20:18 • Deut. 22:5 When God commands us to make distinctive the male and female, and we will not, there are inevitable consequences. The hedge of protection has been broken, and the devil rushes in. There is no shame and no blush. Thus adultery, piercings and sodomy has entered the church. “We will not” - Vs 16,17 – Just as Jeremiah preached the inevitable judgment of God, if we will not follow The Old Paths, there are certain consequences to those choices. Have you ever noticed the subtitle given to Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species? Here it is: “The Preservation of Favored Races...” So-called scholars seem to disagree when writing on the subject of race, racism, racial discrimination, ethnic discrimination or whatever label one uses. However, it is obvious if one believes “evolution” or some form of Darwinism, you are a racist. The Bible calls this heart condition sin. However, God’s Word condemns various sins that result in hatred and murder, yet it is a world of God deniers and Bible assassins who are indeed the racists and perpetrators thereof. It is interesting the hostile reaction the NBA, Clippers Basketball team, and the media had toward Sterling’s private racist remarks. Obviously his remarks made in private had only the effect permitted by individuals. However, the above-mentioned groups took drastic actions against Let it Sterling imposing strenuous judgments and even go! forced financial demands. NEWS BITS FROM HERE AND THERE Israel’s 66th Anniversary - It was May 14, 1948, when the Palestine Post recorded the rebirth of the State of Israel. Jewish people had been scattered throughout the world with millions killed. Many call it a history of judgment as Jerusalem was destroyed by Rome, the Jewish temple decimated and the people dispersed. Stay tuned, for soon to come is the Great Tribulation. May 14, 2014, marks the 66th anniversary of fulfilled prophecy when Israel must become a nation, the temple rebuilt and then “Behold, He cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see Him, and they also which pierced him…” which includes Israel. Jews are returning home “And I will bring you out from the people, and will gather you out, of the countries wherein ye are scattered, with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out” just as God promised. Regardless your eschatology, the world news still features Israel, and Obama is pandering to Palestinians and Islam. Still don’t believe! Then read Isaiah, chapters 10 and 43 and Ezekiel 36:11,24. Israel is literally blooming as desolation turns to “blossom and bud and fill(s) the face of the world with fruit”- Isaiah 27:6. Will even the Dead Sea come alive and fish swim where now little can live? - Ezekiel 47:1011. The liberal media has featured the Eastern Gate. It has been sealed for about 500 years and will be opened when Jesus returns – Ezekiel 44:1-3. On that incredible date of May 14, 1948 five Arab armies swarmed into Israel with the purpose of killing the Jews as predicted by U.S. General George Marshall to Prime Minister David Ben GurIon. But the superior Arab army was defeated by Israel just as the Bible promised in Zechariah 12:6. Prophecy after prophecy has been fulfilled and all shall be Chick Publications April 15 letter states: “Where is America going? Without the Lord, beloved, America is going down. What’s the Answer? The Gospel! Beloved, please read this warning by Daniel Webster, 1823: If religious literature is not widely circulated among the masses in this country, I do not know what is going to become of us as a nation. If truth be not diffused (promoted), error will be. If God and His Word are not known and received, the Devil and his works will gain the ascendance. If the evangelical volume (the gospel) does not reach every hamlet, the pages of a corrupt and licentious literature will. If the power of the gospel is not felt throughout the length and breadth of the land, anarchy and misrule, degradation and misery, corruption and darkness, will reign without mitigation - or end!” 14•The Voice in the Wilderness - Spring 2014 Quarterly Edition

right up to and including the return of the Lord Jesus Christ. 5 to 4 Decision on Prayer – On May 5, 2014 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled, “The town Greece, NY does not violate the First Amendment by opening its meetings with prayer that comports with our tradition,” Justice Anthony Kennedy said, “and does not coerce participation by nonadherents.” Just moments before the opinion was announced from the bench the high court began its public session as it has for decades: with the marshal invoking a traditional statement that ends, “God save the United States and this honorable court.” The several hundred people in attendance, along with the justices, stood for the brief ceremony. Terrorists Attacks on Israel – In 2005 Israel gave Gaza to the Palestinians. Terrorists now overrun the area. In a single day in March 2012, terrorists fired 60 rockets into southern Israel. Threats by Islamic Jihad continue warning Israeli’s to get out of their country. A terrorist’s spokesman has threatened longer-range rockets into Israel. It appears that violence and murder is all the terrorists know. International threats and pressure for more boycott and divestments have become just too much for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In March, Netanyahu declared in Washington, DC, that’s “Enough.” It appeared that Mahmoud Abbas, Chairman of the Palestinian Authority, was waiting for the West “to make his dream of acquiring a possession without concession” come true. This racism thing plagues the world. Israel has been bombarded by an intense propaganda campaign claiming Israel as an apartheid country with no legitimate right to exist. Is $1 million enough? – It all depends on your lifestyle, investments, taxes and inflation, according to recent reports from financial consultants. If you are planning on retiring and living on this savings, well then $1 million will last 19 years drawing $60,000/year; 24 years drawing $50,000/ year; 32 years drawing $40,000/year, but reports say with interest rates as low as they are, that’s not really feasible. So they still recommend $1 million to be a good starting point, if you want to have a retirement to do what ever you want to do.WOW. Americans with this amount of savings are looking to 30 or 40 years of unemployment, called retirement. (Obviously Christians should look at retirement as an opportunity for ministry. A lifestyle of golf, fishing, and motor homes is certainly expensive to maintain. But many Christians with substantial retirement packages could invest in The Kingdom rather than just luxury and recreation. Matthew 6:20,21) The reason why congregations have been so dead is because they have dead men preaching to them. How can dead men beget living children? - George Whitfield If we do not stand for something, we fall for everything.
