·05 jan 25.11 1/24/11 11:55 am page 1 tuesday january 25 2011 beach metro news 5 farewell to cigarettes phil attempts the big `quit by phil lameira it s very difficult to describe to a non-smoker what it s like to smoke explaining why you can t `just stop is virtually impossible but let me attempt i smoked because it made me feel relieved re-charged re-energized re-focused re insert any other term here it seemed that the lack of nicotine in my system was enough for my brain to be fooled into wanting something that it didn t really need trying to argue with your brain though is perhaps not a wise thing especially when it comes to nicotine or any other addiction i presume if you have ever gone an extended period of time without eating you may actually have felt the same cravings that smokers have i m not talking about a late lunch i m talking about skipping lunch and having a late dinner the only difference is that nicotine wears off a lot faster than the digestive system takes to process your intake of food therefore smokers will satisfy their craving much more frequently on average i was smoking a cigarette every hour or about 16-18 cigarettes daily low compared to those who smoke one to two packs a day twenty years that s how long i have been poisoning my lungs minus a few days of quitting attempts that s nearly 7,300 days of puffing away just quit i have heard those two words so many times that i often thought why can t i just quit smoking is not only a chemical addiction it s a habit as well or a learned behaviour it is part of your daily routines and fits in with certain events throughout the day first smoke in the morning smoke after lunch smoke breaks smoke while walking the dog smoke after dinner smoke with coffee smoke with friends who smoke smoke while doing this smoke while doing that smoke therefore quitting is not only giving up the addiction to nicotine but having to deal with the cravings that magically occur during those routine periods coffee without a cigarette you re nuts i must have that cigarette stress well a cigarette will fix that that s why it s so difficult for millions of canadians to `just quit smoking then we re told if you don t quit it will kill you according to health canada s website more than 37,000 people will die this year in canada due to smoking of those more than 300 non-smokers will die of lung cancer and at least 700 non-smokers will die of coronary heart disease caused by exposure to secondhand smoke according to statistics canada smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer which has a mortality rate of 10.63 per 100,000 males aged 40-44 1998 what got me to quit now easy my kids and the stats if i want to see my children grow i must survive if i continue smoking statistics show that my chances of dying due to lung cancer increase dramatically it s a nobrainer my children are only four and two they have a lot of growing to go through i have not had a cigarette or any form of nicotine since dec 28 2010 at 9:30ish i remember that cigarette i still taste it and feel it between my fingers i flicked it into a puddle on the ground stared at it for a few seconds held the smoke in my lungs while thinking this is it and then exhaled said two words out loud not `good bye but the letter count does match that and walked away i haven t looked back that date was not exactly planned out but i knew i wanted to quit before the new year came about it felt too `cliche to quit on new year s day i m also not doing it without aid my doctor prescribed bupropion to me which i took for one week prior to quitting i m not sure if it s helping or not but i certainly haven t lost any battles against the cravings which are few and far between some battles i will admit are excruciating in one instance i drove to a gas station strategically parked outside so i could see the counter and let my conscience go at it for nearly 30 minutes my mind told itself countless times that it would be fine to have just one more that if you went this long then you will be able to do it again that i could buy a pack and just have one cigarette and throw out the rest that i could fail really it s ok that little voice in my head was persistent but in the end it failed and it continues to fail whenever it intervenes in my new life my biggest hope now is that it will just shut up it will happen editor s note you may have noticed stories and photos by phil appearing in the paper over the last few months phil has joined beach metro as our regular reporter/photographer phil s background as a freelance `spot news photographer will add a new dimension to our local coverage advertisement which of these costly homeseller mistakes will you make when you sell your home toronto a new report has just been struck again i am human and obviously forgot to lock the car again and stole a gym bag full of used work out gear some clothing to be returned to a store a dryer vent hose and a hands free phone set for us the attitude that we are somehow exempt from the price that comes with our forays into the good life and the proof of that is no further than the base of the nearest snowy hill as youngsters we soon learn the joys of tobogganing down a hill and coming to a gradual stop where mom and dad await you at which point one of your parents tows you back up the slope and launches you on yet another exhilarating glide to the bottom this is all well and good until the child reaches a weight i believe the figure is 65 pounds when the parents decide that the child is capable of doing all that hauling without their help which leaves the mom and dad free to sit around the living room fireplace and bemoan the rising cost of everything meanwhile reality is setting in for the child and he or she learns their first life lesson which is that if you want to take a toboggan ride down a hill you must be prepared to tow the conveyance to the top yourself pleasure skating gives yet another lesson that we must learn from the thick book of life it is truly a wonderful sensation to glide about an ice rink on a cold winter day whilst chatting merrily with your friends but eventually there i comes a time usually around the twohour mark when you discover that you cannot toss off that witty rejoinder in response to a friend s sally because your lips have frozen solid sturdy returns and speaking of cold conditions that brings us to the latest news about sturdy gert mccurdy who swept into town recently towing her latest love interest in her wake sturdy had been in the northwest territories in the little town of frugal while there she captured the heart of avalanche al obermeyer the assistant sports editor of the frugal bugle as his name suggests avalanche al is a huge man and he was completely in the thrall of sturdy as in fact many a man has before him sturdy s many friends in the community were beginning to think that maybe this was the romance that would lead to marriage until one night avalanche said something that caused sturdy to fetch him a clout alongside the head that rendered him unconscious for three days the last we heard he was in california looking for a dental surgeon who could repair the damage his departure didn t seem to bother sturdy sturdy being the kind of girl she is began looking for other pursuits to occupy her free time of which she has lots because she has been banned from arm-wrestling contests on the grounds that she wins them all the last we heard she was teaching the gavotte to a class of retired librarians i will keep you informed meloncolia sufferers unite in other news i attended a recent meeting at the mudslide which is a cozy little bistro located in the heart of the beach and among the topics discussed was the upsurge of various winter-related phobias in our community different phobias were discussed in quite a knowing manner but trouble erupted when one of the members brought up the subject of long-haired smoochaphobia which he defined as a fear of being kidded by a beautiful woman of which the beach area possesses in abundant numbers a spirited discussion followed ending only when one of the participants made the point that smoochaphobia is not a phobia at all but merely wishful thinking i didn t take part in the conversation but i have a phobia which is a morbid fear of being hit on the head by a melon the actual blow is bad enough but the collateral damage is worse consisting of melon juice and slippery little seeds dribbling down your front and that is not all the absolute bottom is reached when the melon splits open revealing little handwritten messages along the lines of die aged newsman it is not easy being me letters to the editor continue cont d from page 6 perhaps we pick up after their pet but then carry around the waste in a seethrough bag as if it were a trophy they then stop to talk to others on the street pretending not to notice while the dump swings back and forth like a hypnotizing pendulum they may even shake unwashed hands with each other which we are taught not to do after cleaning ourselves up in the bathroom why is it different when we clean up after our pets do people not realize that waste is waste whether it comes from a dog or a person imagine if we all walked around with our morning waste in one hand and a coffee in the other on our way to work we don t have dogs but we do have kids when they were younger and had exploded in their diaper we would fold it up put it in a plastic bag and then store it in a diaper bag until we got to a suitable place for disposal i appreciate that the simple plastic bag is much more environmentally friendly than a diaper but how about at least placing the tied up plastic bag in a diaper bag too in order to keep the illusion as they amble down the sidewalk they aren t half-way between a deposit and a flush i m sure even their dogs would try to cover up the mess if it was left to them as evidenced by the crap on our shoes or the spit on the balls that we bring to the park many dog owners will ignore this plea too that seems to be the culture of entitlement that exists in the beach at least having written this rant i feel somewhat relieved now where s my plastic bag peter bedard kenilworth avenue remember what s in that bag having lost the war in the beach to dog owners who won t recently at christie s in hong kong a case of 12 bottles of 1982 chateau lafite sold for roughly $90,000 astonishingly more than it would have sold for in the uk competing auction house sotheby s claims that over the last year it sold over $50 million worth of wine almost double its total in london and new york combined.why this huge boom the recent abolition of a 40 import tax has certainly made it cheaper to import wine to the former british colony aside from a burgeoning middle class who are starting to drink wine the other main factor is the chinese business custom of giving face to between the ages of 6 and 12 wisdom teeth do not typically erupt into the mouth until the age of 17 to 21 years when children are entering adulthood and allegedly becoming `wiser i know some parents out there may have in mind a different nickname for third molars because of the frequency of problems associated with the wisdom teeth questions abound regarding their existence do wisdom teeth serve any useful purpose why do we have them in the first place are all wisdom teeth a problem if you consider the ancestors of modern humans they had much larger jaws both in length and width the typical diet for cro-magnons and neanderthals consisted of raw meat nuts roots berries and leaves this larger jaw was not only necessary but also easily able to accommodate 32 teeth with the advent of the agricultural revolution came the refining and milling of grains the cooking and tenderizing of meat and of course the development of utensils for cutting food into smaller dr allan katchky is a dentist who practises in the east end 416-694-2220 pieces as our diet has evolved so has the human jaw gradually becoming smaller in an evolutionary sense however the teeth have lagged behind fitting the same 32 teeth into a smaller jaw can sometimes be problematic fortunately the teeth are starting to `catch up an ever increasing number of adults are missing at least one wisdom tooth and a very small number of fortunate ones are missing all four does this imply that all wisdom teeth are a problem and that all need to be removed certainly this is not the case just like humans vary in height so too do the jaws vary in length larger jaws can comfortably accommodate 32 teeth while smaller jaws may not it is important to also consider that wisdom teeth are extremely variable orientation are typically less of a problem while the angled ones tend to cause more problems typical problems associated with wisdom teeth occur due to lack of physical space pressure from teeth attempting to grow into inadequate space or from frequent food trapping due to inability to thoroughly clean the rear-most teeth in the mouth once teenaged patients reach the age of 18 if the wisdom teeth are not yet visible in the mouth radiographs x-rays are typically recommended to assess the position and orientation of the wisdom teeth with these x-rays the dentist can make a recommendation as to whether it is better to allow the teeth time to grow and attempt to retain them or better to have them removed third molar teeth which remain impacted blocked or unerupted beneath the gum can still cause silent problems even in the absence of pain or discomfort for this reason ungrown wisdom teeth need to be monitored throughout adult life the best news of course is that the futurists
