featured artist of the month by deanmacadam n deacadam ma new to san diego we give artist dean macadam a warm welcome as our featured artist of the month with a style that is colorful and bold borrowing elements from cubism and classic illustration of the 1950 s he s great addition to the san diego creative community with that said we present to you dean macadam my parents have always been supportive and when an opportunity came for me to attend the art institute of fort lauderdale on scholarship i went for it it was a great experience and an eye-opener it was the first time i realized how much talent is out there like i mentioned before i was the kid who always drew pretty well but now i saw that there were hundreds maybe even thousands of other artists who were so remarkable at their craft it was very inspiring since art school back in the early 90 s i ve continuously freelanced for a lot of different ad agencies magazines toy manufactures and publishers that s what i love about my job you never know what the next assignment will be i just completed a game about sumo hamsters nuff said i love art i love illustration what others create still remains to be my inspiration i m also learning that san diego has a really great art scene and i m looking forward to being a part of it to see more of my work check out www.deanmacadam.com i 04 february2010/sdsocialmagazine.com ve landed in sun ny san diego i ve been here just six short months and i love it but then again what s not to love right previously my wife daughter and i were living in sweden the weather is just a bit better here i was born in latvia in 1972 and we moved to canada when i was a kid my mother said i had a hard transition with the language at first from russian to english and maybe that s when my passion for art first developed she said from the age of 5 i was always drawing or maybe escaping anyway from my earliest memories i was consistently doodling at first it was horses then super-heroes then vikings.

lifestyle fashion favorite designers dolce gabbana alexander mcqueen what was your favorite part of being on the show my favorite part about being on the show is that it allowed me to really figure out who i was as a designer how has being on the show changed your life how did you end up auditioning for project runway after watching the first season i was really inspired and knew i really wanted to audition but of course had to wait until i was 21 i knew i had the skills to compete on the show so when i graduated from college i just went for it and from there it all happened really fast i feel like i am living a dream what was the first garment you ever made i made a satin teal-green and white dress for my cousin s prom how would you describe your design aesthetic dark and edgy with a twist of punk how does your surroundings in mexico and southern california play a part in what you create and the feel of your pieces growing up in a fashionable what music/movies do you get inspired by i love musicals my favorite is rent who are your style icons victoria beckham and lady gaga family i was influenced by my mom s style and i also did a lot of people-watching i ve always been into the dark and mysterious aesthetics and that just stayed with me throughout the years what genres influence your style rock-and-roll punk glam and 80 s i feel so lucky to have such wonderful support from my family friends and fans being on the show has opened a lot of doors and i am really excited about the future what s up next for you right now i am working hard on my fall 2010 collection and i ve always been into the dark and mysterious aesthetics and that just stayed with me throughout the years -jesus estrada will be headlining a show with project runway season 6 alum gordana gehlhausen at la fashion week in march that s all i can say right now february2010/sdsocialmagazine.com 07

and almost 10 million americans taking care of loved ones suffering from alzheimer s a task both financially and emotionally taxing while care of those suffering is at the forefront of everyone s mind alzheimer s and dementia triple healthcare costs for americans 65 and older although it is commonly thought that the disease only strikes the elderly people in their 30s are increasingly being diagnosed and it s said that in the coming years as many 16 million will develop alzheimer s researchers have yet to find a cure for this devastating disease but medical and non-medical options are available to treat behavioral and cognitive symptoms and support is offered for those suffering as well as those who are affected by it fundraisers such as quash benefit the alzheimer s association and provide the means for more research care and support last year s event raised $32,000 for the alzheimer s association quash was described by one mission valley resident as a great event that engages participants to use brain power creativity and team building skills while rasing funds for the alzheimer s association it s a great way for san diegans to have fun while raising funds to help bring us one step closer to a world without alzheimer s one of the highlights of last year s event was actor seth rogen s participation in the competition most known for his blockbuster movies superbad and knocked up rogen and team memory finders were recognized for raising the most funds on event day 10 1 alzh e imer s wa rningsigns memory loss that disrupts daily life challenges in planning or solving problems difficulty completing familiar tasks at home at work or at leisure confusion with time or place trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships new problems with words in speaking or writing misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps decreased or poor judgement withdrawal from work or social activities changes in mood and personality 2 3 it is said that in the 4 coming years as many 16 million 30-somethings will develop alzheimer s 5 6 7 this year s 3rd annual quash competition will be held at embarcadero parok south on february 27th with registration beginning at 9am the quash challenge will take place shortly after the ceremony and competitors will be set free on the streets of san diego with the goal to have fun win the most points and raise funds and awareness the day will wrap up with a closing ceremony at 1:30pm to honor participants and those suffering from alzheimer s and an after-party ending at 3pm to sign up for a team join an existing team or donate to the cause visit the quash website at quash.kintera.org the site provides valuable resources for information about the cause and event along with tools and tips to help raise funds for yourself and your team for more information call 858 492-4400 or visit quash.kintera.org 8 9 10 february2010/sdsocialmagazine.com 13
