Chapter 1 2012 1.1 January (2012-01-14 15:35) MFL Sunderland is back! Regular users of MFL Sunderland may have noticed that the site has not been updated since the end of August 2011. The necessary steps have now been taken to enable the site to be updated regularly and new resources to be added. The site will shortly have a new(ish) look with slightly different and, I hope, improved navigation. Be warned that some of your bookmarked and favourite pages may no longer exist after this update. In the past, updates to the site have been logged on the [1]”What’s new?” page of the site. This page will now be placed in the Archive and this blog will take over its job. If you add the blog to your Google Reader you will always find out when new resources have been added. MFL Sunderland relies on donations of resources from users. I upload all of my own resources, but be aware that I teach KS2 French and Spanish now. New resources for KS3 and KS4, and anything German or Italian, will have to be donated by other users. Do you have a resource that you would like to donate to MFL Sunderland? Just email it to [2]mflsunderland@gmail.com. All resources will be very gratefully received. More news soon! Clare 1. http://www.sunderlandschools.org/mfl-sunderland/whatsnew.htm 2. mailto:mflsunderland@gmail.com MFL Sunderland: first step complete (2012-01-16 08:49) If you look at MFL Sunderland today, you will notice that the navigation has changed. Each language now appears on the button bar at the side of all the pages for easier access to the resources that you want. The ”Resources” page, the one with all four languages and the general resource headings listed, no longer exists. I hope that once you are used to the changes you will find the site easy to use. Please email any feedback to [1]mflsunderland@gmail.com or leave a comment on this blog. 7

Clare 1. mailto:mflsunderland@gmail.com Primary French and Primary Spanish (2012-01-20 15:32) This afternoon I have added the first in a long queue of new resources to the website. There are some new number worksheets on the [1]Primary French resources page, along with some PowerPoints for numbers and other topics too. I have also started to add the first of this year’s [2]Primary Spanish resources, starting with Family, Pets and Sports, including the first Olympic resources. Some of these resources will also come in handy for KS3 beginners or SEN. I will, of course, let you know as soon as I upload more resources. Clare 1. http://www.sunderlandschools.org/mfl-sunderland/resources-pr-fr-resources.htm 2. http://www.sunderlandschools.org/mfl-sunderland/resources-pr-sp.htm A friendship bracelet for el Día de la Amistad (2012-01-23 19:45) 14th February is well known for being Valentine’s Day, but did you know that in much of South America it is also Friendship Day, or el Día de la Amistad? Last year my KS2 Spanish students found out about Día de la Amistad and we had a go at singing the song [1]”Hay un amigo en mí” (You’ve got a friend in me) by the Gipsy Kings from Toy Story 3. Then they made [2]Valentine’s and Friendship cards. This year, our Spanish link primary school in Madrid has asked us to make them something for 14th February which they will be able to display in their school. The children will be thrilled to see a photo of their work being displayed in another school in another country, so this week they will be making friendship bracelets for their penfriends and attaching them to a small card on which they will write a saying or proverb to do with friends and friendship. If you’d like to have a go at making the friendship bracelets, you’ll find available to download here the instructions, the friendship sayings and a PowerPoint to introduce the day to your class. There are still more resources to come! If you have any resources that you would like to share with MFL Sunderland, please email them to [4]mflsunderland@gmail.com I can’t pay you or offer lavish prizes, but the MFL teaching community would be very grateful. Thank you all for the 56,398 hits in January. That is a significant improvement on the 52,062 in January 2011. 1. 2. 3. 4. http://www.sunderlandschools.org/mfl-sunderland/resources-pr-fr-resources.htm http://www.sunderlandschools.org/mfl-sunderland/resources/PrimaryFrench/navet-enorme.ppt http://www.sunderlandschools.org/mfl-sunderland/resources-pr-sp.htm mailto:mflsunderland@gmail.com Random Number Generators (2012-02-23 20:46) One of my current interests is the contribution that MFL makes to maths and numeracy, and I’ve put my findings so far [1]here. I spent this afternoon [2]completing sequences (also available in 10

Spanish), [3]rounding numbers up and down to the nearest ten and working out ”[4]greater than, less than and equal to” in French with Years 4, 5 and 6. Knowing what they are expected to do in maths has given me lots of ideas for teaching numbers, and, of course, it’s reinforcing the maths that they do. In EYFS they work on single digit recognition, in particular recognising and saying single digits and then numbers to 20 in random order. I have created a resource which will help you to do that in MFL - a random number generator. It works in Excel and is therefore pretty low-tech, but it’s simple to use. All you need to do is press F9 to change the numbers. The single number is for the most simple practice. Change the number and the students call it out in the target language. You could also make this a team game, where you have a member of each team at the front and the winner is the one who calls out the correct number first. There is also a 2-number version which could be used in a similar way. If you want to change the range of numbers used in this generator, all you have to do is to change the numbers in the white boxes at the top. There is also a version with 3, 4 and 5 numbers. You could use this to practise hundreds and thousands. Alternatively you could generate a group of, say, 4 numbers, and the students have to say them in the language in the right order. Hence the generator gives you ”5 2 8 4 7” and the students have to work out ”deux quatre cinq sept huit”. They could also add them up and give you the answer in the target language. The idea is that they move around the board in the pattern used by the knights in chess. They have to say in the target language each number they land on if they are to ”win” that square. There is a certain amount of strategy involved, and the winner is the player with the most squares marked off. More information about how to play is included in the PDF. 11

On a [2]new MFL Sunderland page I have outlined and summarised the KS2 numeracy objectives and uploaded some custom-made resources to complement them. The resources are intended not only to help you to meet these objectives but also to give you some more ideas for teaching numbers and other aspects of maths. I will be adding more resources to this page soon. Take a look - you’ll probably be surprised by how much you already do. Did you know, for example, that every time you do a Venn Diagram activity, you are teaching Data handling? Easter links and ideas for French (2012-03-27 20:44) It’s finally the last week of term (for most of us!) and people are looking for activities with an Easter theme. My Year 2 French classes today made [1]Cloches Volantes We talked about the chocolate shapes that we have at Easter (eggs, rabbits and chicks) and then I showed them some of the chocolate shapes that can be bought in France - fish and bells. I gave them the basic bell and they coloured it in and some drew wings on them. You can download the bells and the PowerPoint below. Last Easter I showed my Year 2 children a video of a procession of Nazarenos, and then we made [1]our own procession, with lots of different cofradías. I’m going to be doing the same with my current Year 2s tomorrow.
