EVERY GRAM EARNS ITS WAY ONTO THE CAR. WELCOME The road to SEMA. It leads us to new places every year. We start with a lineup of vehicles that produces unmatched performance and capability — iconic nameplates such as Suburban, the longest-running nameplate in automotive history; Silverado, the strong, smart and capable benchmark; Camaro, the legendary, ever-evolving force in performance; Impala, the beloved sedan; Sonic, the small car gaining a big reputation. And of course, Corvette, the sports car that’s captured imaginations for seven generations. From there, concepts are sketched and brought to life with highly functional parts and specially crafted accessories. In the end, we find ourselves on new roads. This magazine highlights the results — this year’s SEMA lineup — and the unique development, design and engineering behind our award-winning vehicles. There’s nothing quite like the SEMA Show. It’s one of our favorite venues to showcase our latest personalization, customization and enhanced capability options. Thank you for visiting us this year. ALL-NEW 2014 CORVETTE STINGRAY Carbon nano-hybrid composite. Hydroformed aluminum. Carbon-fiber hood and roof. Meticulous selection and exacting placement of materials. Learn what it takes to build a show-stopper. 60 OFFICER PRESENCE Tahoe is ready for duty and offers a package with the content needed to protect and serve. 16 30 54 In the 60s, the Central Office Production Order (COPO) process was primarily used for configuring special fleet orders of mundane vehicles such as taxi cabs and delivery trucks. However, a few enterprising Chevrolet dealers used the system to configure some of the fastest Camaro vehicles ever produced. Since then, COPO has become synonymous with higherperformance models – not available anywhere else – which go on to become desirable collector items. This year, the COPO Camaro revisits the SEMA showroom; continuing to push the limits as a track-only drag-racing car. “We’re really excited to bring the COPO program back for 2014,” says Sandor Piszar, Director of Performance and Accessories. “We’ve had overwhelmingly strong enthusiast demand.” Only 69 COPO Camaros are being produced, but the 2014 COPO #1 can be yours. This special car, the only one finished in COPO Ice Blue Metallic, will be auctioned off by Chevrolet Performance at Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale Auction, in January. All proceeds will benefit the Freedom Team of Wounded Veterans, as they compete in marathons across the country. Those who are interested in purchasing one of the other limitededition COPO vehicles must go to chevrolet.com/performance/ copo-camaro and sign up on the COPO Camaro Mailing List. An independent third party will randomly select consumers. If you aren’t chosen for the opportunity to purchase a COPO Camaro, and you don’t make the winning bid at auction, don’t worry. You can build your own legend using the Chevrolet Performance catalog or a COPO replica using the COPO Build Book (part number: 88958767) available through your Chevrolet dealer. 12 Two new concepts give Corvette Stingray a whole new look using available Corvette Genuine Accessories. Includes a removable Corvette Generations poster. 04 I CHEVROLET SEMA 2013 EDITION 8 CORVETTE ATLANTIC AND PACIFIC Visit chevrolet.com/performance/copocamaro to learn more about the history and specifications of the COPO Camaro. CORVETTE STINGRAY VIRTUAL AND REALITY THE VIRTUAL WORLD AND REALITY HAVE COLLIDED YET AGAIN. THIS TIME, A TOTALLY NEW VIDEO GAME HERO HAS EMERGED. The relationship between Sony and Chevrolet dates back to the official Corvette Stingray reveal — a camouflaged “prototype” form of the iconic sports car was available for download and in-game competition prior to reveal, while a real car was available closely after. Now, the game has changed with the new Corvette Stingray Gran Turismo® concept, designed for play in Gran Turismo® 6. CHEVROLET AND SONY CREATE A GAME CHANGER Late last year, nearly half a million people around the world experienced the first virtual prototype of the all-new Corvette Stingray in the critically acclaimed racing game from Sony Computer Entertainment’s PlayStation® 3 (PS3™) system — Gran Turismo® 5. Now, to commemorate the 15th anniversary of Gran Turismo® and the release of the all-new Gran Turismo® 6 video game, Chevrolet and Sony have teamed up again to capture the imaginations of gamers and driving enthusiasts everywhere with the Corvette Stingray Gran Turismo® concept. THE NEXT LEVEL Gran Turismo® 6 will feature 71 layouts of 33 tracks, something that prompted Chevrolet and Sony designers to turn things up a notch. “Sony pushed us to create the ultimate track day car for this game,” says Frank Saucedo, Director of Advanced Design for General Motors. “Our main focus was increasing downforce and reducing lift even more on an already dynamically designed sports car … it’s the next level for this virtual Corvette Stingray.” On the outside are bigger and wider exterior vents, including a carbon-fiber hood vent for cooling, while a larger rear spoiler and ground effects package add prowess and help contribute to reduced lift. Chevrolet also worked alongside Michelin® to produce the latest and greatest track tires. Special graphics and various concept Chevrolet Accessories complete this flagship sports car concept that will make gamers want to hit pause. “The 15th anniversary Gran Turismo® hood graphic and racing effects are stunning and really convey the heart and soul of this virtual car’s performance,” says Saucedo. “We’ve pushed things further for this vehicle in terms of performance … it’s a good taste of what’s possible with Corvette Stingray.” “WE’VE PUSHED THINGS FURTHER FOR THIS VEHICLE IN TERMS OF PERFORMANCE … IT’S A GOOD TASTE OF WHAT’S POSSIBLE WITH CORVETTE STINGRAY.” You can experience the Corvette Stingray in Gran Turismo® here at SEMA in one of several video game simulators at the Chevrolet display. And be sure to race the Corvette Stingray Gran Turismo® concept in Gran Turismo® 6, available this December. THE ULTIMATE VIDEO GAME HERO Throughout video game history, there have been thousands of characters and icons that gamers have had the pleasure of living vicariously through — but perhaps none are more capable of helping them achieve heroic status than the all-new 2014 Corvette Stingray. Low, Light and Lean With a tightly sculpted and athletic exterior, it wears any color well. Every line and surface has been optimized to enhance its super powers. SILVERADO FIRST TO RESPOND When his pager goes off, Chief Philip C. Stittleburg heads to work. It could happen any time of day — noon, midnight, the middle of the preacher’s sermon, just as he’s sitting down to dinner. The pager is a part of him, 24/7. After a quick stop into the fire station in the little village of La Farge, Wisconsin, he and his colleagues head to the scene. Everyone has a designated task: fire suppression, water supply, crowd control, ventilation or search and rescue. They organize chaos. And it’s not even their day job. Stittleburg is one of many volunteer firefighters serving around the United States. They often receive very little or no pay, but give back everything they’ve got. Most just volunteer for the good of the community and the unbeatable feeling they get from saving lives. Many people don’t realize that the majority of all fire departments in the country are entirely or mostly volunteer. “It’s a very well-kept secret that three out of four firefighters are volunteers,” says Stittleburg, who is also Chairman of the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC). “The best compliment we can get is when people don’t even know the difference. They just need to know someone is coming when they call for help.” The NVFC is made up of firefighter associations from 49 states, excluding Hawaii, and thousands of members. Its goal is to create policies, standards and programs to keep firefighters safe. Its Heart-Healthy Firefighter program promotes good fitness, nutrition and health, since heart attacks are the leading cause of on-duty fatalities. To combat a declining number of volunteers joining the ranks, the NVFC reaches out to young people through the National Junior Firefighter Program. 1 Always use safety belts and the correct restraint for your child’s age and size. Children are safer when properly secured in a rear seat in the appropriate infant, child or booster seat. Never place a rear-facing infant restraint in the front seat of any vehicle equipped with a passenger air bag. See the Owner’s Manual and child safety seat instructions for more safety information. 2 Visit onstar.com for coverage map, details and system limitations. Services vary by model and conditions. OnStar acts as a link to existing emergency service providers. 3 Use only GM-approved wheel and tire combinations. 12 I CHEVROLET SEMA 2013 EDITION Now the NVFC has another advocate in its corner: Chevrolet. The organization and automaker have partnered to increase awareness about volunteer emergency service providers — the unsung everyday heroes. “THE ALL-NEW 2014 SILVERADO WAS ENGINEERED WITH MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGIES THEY CAN RELY ON IN THE TOUGHEST SITUATIONS.” “These firefighters are the kind of hardworking Americans who inspire us to build strong, dependable vehicles that will help them get the job done,” says Chris Perry, Vice President of Chevrolet Marketing. “The all-new 2014 Silverado was engineered with materials and technologies they can rely on in the toughest situations.” To honor their dedication and service, Chevrolet designed the Z71 Silverado Volunteer Firefighter concept. “We wanted to pay tribute to these men and women,” says Chevrolet Designer Amaury Diaz. “It’s a fantasy vehicle for firefighters.” The truck has a red and silver paint scheme with custom graphics. It grabs attention, but it has a utilitarian side, too. Custom lighting, a siren and chrome fire extinguishers could be put to good use in a call to action. Firefighter gear, including a halligan tool and an axe, is easily accessible in the cabin. Stittleburg says a firefighter’s truck has to be safe, dependable and hardworking, so Silverado is a great choice. With a structure made of high-strength steel, Silverado’s dedication to safety matches that of Stittleburg and his fellow firefighters. The full-size pickup truck is loaded with features such as available Lane Departure Warning designed to alert the driver if the vehicle drifts from its lane; Safety Alert Seat, which uses haptic vibrations to warn of danger; and Forward Collision Alert, which is designed to warn the driver when he or she is getting too close to the vehicle ahead. Silverado also comes standard with StabiliTrak® Electronic Stability Control, Trailer Sway Control, Hill Start Assist, head-curtain side air bags with rollover protection1 and a six-month trial of OnStar®2. Front and Rear Park Assist, Rear Vision Camera and spotter mirrors are also available on most models. GET INVOLVED: Interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter or supporting their work? SILVERADO ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN WHEN YOU’RE OUT ON THE ROAD. SILVERADO IS PREPARED FOR THE WORST. Whatever disaster may come, the survivalist is prepared. That’s the mind-set Chevrolet Designer Amaury Diaz put himself in when designing the Silverado Black Ops concept. If you had to take a truck to the edge of the earth and back, this is the one. The concept vehicle, based on the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado, is loaded with water, gas, a generator and has a TruckVault® full of survival equipment. “In a nutshell, this is the type of vehicle the hero would drive in an action movie,” Diaz says. “The hero always gets a high-tech vehicle.” Of course, in Hollywood, the hero’s vehicle still has to look good — even under the harshest conditions. In the real world, you’re more likely to encounter an ice storm or flash flooding, and in those scenarios Silverado is more than capable. Chevrolet engineers threw about 13 million simulated and real-world miles under the tires of the 2014 Silverado before bringing it to market, to ensure it’s ready for anything. In addition to seven million miles of real-world testing, the truck spent six million miles barreling over the deserts and mountains of Nevada, the frozen flats of Kapuskasing, Ontario, and inside the Climatic Wind Tunnel at GM’s Milford Proving Ground. “The designers and engineers who created the new Silverado have built this truck — and tested it to the extremes — to give customers the right tools for the tough jobs,” says Executive Chief Engineer Jeff Luke. Deep water. Death Valley sand and sun. Rocky Mountain snow. Silverado prides itself on its survival instincts in any scenario. Few of us would ever expect to take Silverado to those extremes. Then again, survivalists don't really expect to encounter disasters on their daily commute. But they’re ready for it, all the same. AVAILABLE PRODUCTION CONTENT: • 5.3L V8 EcoTec3 Engine • 355 Horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of Torque • 6-Speed Automatic Transmission • DURALIFE™ Brake Rotors • Fully Boxed Hydroformed Frame • StabiliTrak® Electronic Stability Control System • CornerStep Rear Bumper • Locking Tailgate with EZ-Lift-and-Lower Feature CONCEPT CONTENT: • Custom-Painted Production Z71 18-Inch Wheels • Z71 Off-Road Suspension with Enhanced Stance • Front-Mounted Winch • Bed-Mounted TruckVault Storage Unit with Survival Supplies • Custom-Fabricated Lower Body Armor • Light Bridge with Forward and Rearward 40-Inch LED Light Bars • Solar Charging Panel • Borla® Performance Exhaust • Chevrolet Accessories 4-Inch Black Assist Steps “THIS IS THE TYPE OF VEHICLE THE HERO WOULD DRIVE IN AN ACTION MOVIE.” Silverado has good looks to spare, but this concept truck dresses for the occasion with custom graphics, lower body armor and a LED light bridge. Custom-painted 18-inch wheels with big-tread tires enhance the sturdy stance. “Most of our concept vehicles at SEMA are very realistic,” says Chevrolet Design Manager Dave Ross. “But the Silverado Black Ops concept is all about having some fun. Silverado is a very capable truck, and this concept talks about capability in a very tongue-in-cheek way.” 00 14 I CHEVROLET SEMA 2013 EDITION CHEVY.COM I 15

CHEYENNE LIGHTWEIGHTING APPLICATIONS ENHANCE PERFORMANCE MAINTAINING ITS “Carbon fiber is an extremely strong and lightweight material,” says designer Brett Golliff. “We really looked at how we could make variations within it for this truck.” The result was a larger weave design (like you see on many racing products) and toned-down gloss levels to give the carbon-fiber parts more of a performance look. Inspired by the Camaro Z/28, this concept also includes a hood extractor, racing-inspired ground effects, 19-inch tires, alloy wheels, carbon ceramic brakes and an aggressive lower suspension. Inside, there's RECARO® seats and a flat-bottom steering wheel. Stripping off the truck’s trailer hitch, spare tire, center floor console and sound-deadening materials helped this concept shed even more weight. Less weight plus more power (provided by Chevrolet’s 6.2L V8 with 420 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque) equals high-level performance. PHYSIQUE Truck owners use their trucks in ways that would blow most car drivers’ minds. They pull heavy trailers through mountains, haul supplies down washboard gravel roads and slog through mud and muck on construction sites. A truck this strong and capable must have to weigh as much as a tank, right? Not so, thanks to lightweight materials like aluminum and ultra high-strength steel. The Cheyenne concept showcases these materials, but takes lightweighting even further with additional aluminum components, carbon fiber and other composite components. These materials let designers and engineers swap out components and systems for those that weigh less and are just as durable — and, in some cases, more durable — than their predecessors. On the Cheyenne concept, the bumpers, tailgate and mirror caps all were replaced with carbon-fiber versions. While GM designers and engineers made many modifications to help reduce weight on the Cheyenne concept, several lightweight features found on the production Silverado remain, including the main rails and major cross members of the frame, which are made from high-strength steel. “High-strength steel reduces the weight of these components without sacrificing the toughness and durability customers count on,” says Executive Chief Engineer Jeff Luke, adding that hydroforming is used to improve strength and reduce the mass of the front of the truck’s frame. The cab structures also incorporate high-strength steel in the A-pillars, B-pillars, roof rails and rocker panels. Ultra highstrength steel is used in areas of the rocker panels and underbody in anticipation of new shallow-offset crash tests. SPEC CHECK CHEYENNE CONCEPT CONTENT • Carbon-Fiber Front and Rear Bumper • Carbon-Fiber Tailgate with Aero Lip • Carbon-Fiber Ground Effects • Hood Extractor Vent • Carbon-Fiber Pickup Box Inner • Carbon-Fiber Mirror Caps • Cheyenne Body Graphics • Lightweight Halogen Beam Headlamps • RECARO® Seats • Flat-Bottom Performance Steering Wheel • Borla® Performance Exhaust • Carbon Ceramic Brembo® Brakes • Tubular Sway Bar “HIGH-STRENGTH STEEL REDUCES THE WEIGHT OF THESE COMPONENTS WITHOUT SACRIFICING THE TOUGHNESS AND DURABILITY CUSTOMERS COUNT ON” Even the pickup bed benefits from tougher steel. The production Silverado has a roll-formed steel box floor, which is lighter, stronger and more durable than traditional stamped steel boxes used by major competitors. Aluminum is used in a number of areas to reduce mass without compromising dependability. Four-wheel-drive Crew Cab models, for example, use forged aluminum upper front control arms and cast aluminum lower control arms and steering knuckles for mass reduction. The strategic use of high-strength steel, aluminum and other premium materials enabled engineers to create a new Silverado. CHEYENNE CHEVROLET PERFORMANCE POWERFUL, YET EFFICIENT Like many of its key structural features, the 6.2L V8 engine powering the Cheyenne concept is available on the production Silverado in dealerships now. Its large displacement delivers the torque to power a Crew Cab and pull a substantial trailer, yet continuously Variable Valve Timing provides efficiency. The 4.3L V6 comes standard on 2014 Silverado Work Truck and LT models, and is part of the trio of new engines, dubbed EcoTec3, which also includes a 5.3L V8. “In creating the 2014 Silverado 1500, we looked at a wide variety of powertrain configurations and concluded that large-displacement truck engines could best provide the payload and towing capability that truck customers require, with the long-term dependability they expect,” Luke explains. All three EcoTec3 engines feature Direct Injection, Active Fuel Management™ (cylinder deactivation) and Variable Valve Timing, a combination not found in competitors’ trucks. “Our EcoTec3 engines offer technology no other truck maker can match, and we offer it in every one of our engines, for every one of our customers,” says Jordan Lee, Small-Block Chief Engineer and Program Manager. “It’s not an extra-cost feature. You get our best and most advanced technology regardless of trim level.” To provide the dependability and low cost of ownership that truck customers count on, all three engines feature a work-tested, race-proven overhead valve design that is light and compact, and has inherently low friction for improved fuel efficiency. They also have aluminum blocks and heads for lower weight. Every year at SEMA, Chevrolet Performance explores “what could have been” by rebuilding a classic and mixing in modern technology. The project this year: a 1978 Chevrolet Silverado with the innovative E-Rod 5.3L Crate Powertrain System. RESTORING CAPABILITY THE 1978 CHEVROLET PERFORMANCE CLASSIC PICKUP TRUCK ALL ABOUT INNOVATION This year’s Cheyenne concept is a nod to the innovative Cheyenne trucks of the past. 1971 Chevrolet C/10 Cheyenne Pickup Of all the Chevrolet truck models offered for 1971, by far the most popular was the 2WD C/10 pickup, with more than a quarter million built. The new-for-1971 Cheyenne package helped raise Chevy pickup style to all new levels. Back in the late 1970s, vehicle manufacturers had limitations on adding highperformance elements to their trucks, due to evolving emission standards. Today, thanks to Chevrolet Performance, owners of classic trucks can have the best of both worlds with the line of E-Rod Crate Powertrain Systems – added capability along with emissions compliance. No other manufacturer offers a range of EO-certified engines like Chevrolet Performance. The 5.3L crate engine is engineered for truck applications and offers a broad, flat torque curve that’s ideal for giving older trucks an excellent feeling of low-end power. At only 2,000 rpm, it delivers 300 lb.-ft. of torque and holds above that level all the way to 5,500 rpm. And it’s now totally emissions compliant to today’s standards. complete package like this today. It’s all pre-wired and with a few simple connections you have an integrated system that drives and works.” You can check out chevrolet.com/performance for a complete list of available Connect & Cruise packages. 2003 Chevrolet Cheyenne Concept The Chevrolet Cheyenne concept introduced at the 2003 North American International Auto Show had innovative designs not available in production vehicles at the time, such as side access doors and a unique cargo bed. Its engine was a supercharged 6.0L V8. Chevrolet Performance is designed to offer parts that not only increase the performance of your truck or hot-rod but also adds simplicity to the installation process. The “Connect & Cruise” Crate Powertrain Packages (LSA, LS3 or LC9 engines) are designed to do just that — and add peace of mind. “When you purchase a system like this, you’re buying an engine, a transmission and all the installation parts,” says Steve Felix, EGM, Engine Development & Validation Manager. “We’re the only ones who offer a 22 I CHEVROLET SEMA 2013 EDITION CHEVY.COM I 23

CHEVROLET PERFORMANCE BEHIND THE SCENES THE 1978 CHEVROLET PERFORMANCE CLASSIC PICKUP TRUCK The goal: make it better than it was out of the factory. It was inspected, torn down, painted, and then meticulously built back up starting from the frame. Rusty Sampsel, Development Engineer from Chevrolet Performance, completely rebuilt the original 4x4 transfer case, the front and rear axles, and changed the axle ratio. New technology (a high-pressure fuel system, electronic powertrain controls, and emissions compliance hardware) was introduced into historic infrastructure. The truck was built, driven, and tested to today’s high standards in the Chevrolet Performance Build Facility at GM’s Milford Proving Ground in Milford, Michigan. “ There are thousands of parts on this classic truck,” says Larry Hebert, Lead Build Technician. “Each one is individually handled like a restoration … from start to finish, it’s similar to completing a jigsaw puzzle.” 1978 CHEVROLET PERFORMANCE CLASSIC PICKUP CONCEPT • Two-Tone Custom Black and Red Exterior Paint • 16-Inch x 8-Inch Wheels PowderCoated Switchblade Silver • Re-trimmed Seats in Red Simulated Leather and Red and Black Houndstooth Cloth • 5.3L Chevrolet Performance E-Rod Crate Powertrain System with: --336 Horsepower @ 5300 rpm --350 lb.-ft. of Torque @ 4400 rpm --Programmed Engine Controller --Engine Wiring Harness --Electronic Throttle Pedal -- Oxygen Sensors and Mounting Bosses --Mass Air Flow Sensor • 4L70E Transmission with: --4-Speed Electrically Controlled Automatic --5-Pinion Gear Sets --Heat-Treated Stator Haft Splines --Induction Hardened Turbine Shaft --Seven Plate Clutches --Transmission Controller Kit • Original Transfer Case • Sandblasted and Powder-Coated Matte Black Frame • Front Suspension (Rebuilt Springs and Front Axle) • Rear Suspension (Rebuilt Springs and Bushings) • Rebuilt Brakes (Production Calipers, Rotors and Drums) • New Power Brake Booster and Master Cylinder • Rebuilt Production Power Steering CHECK SPEC Looking to restore a classic? Chevrolet Performance Spotlight: PERFORMANCE The words “Chevrolet Performance” stir the hearts of race fans and car buffs around the world. There is a long and storied history for Chevrolet, and it all started over 100 years ago with the co-founder of the company, Louis Chevrolet. He was a self-taught engineer. A car guy. A racer. He built race cars and used the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as his proving grounds. His innovative mechanical abilities and fierce competitiveness on the track greatly influenced the development and accomplishments of racing and high-performance automobiles. CHEVROLET AROUND THE BLOCK It ’s the very foundation of where Chevrolet stands today. From Chevrolet’s continued presence at numerous racing circuits across the country, to the ingenuity that is steeped within iconic nameplates like Corvette, Camaro and the all-new SS, the principles of innovation and track success remain a part of Chevrolet’s performance heritage. They’re even present in the philosophy of Chevrolet’s Performance Parts showcased here at SEMA. Chevrolet’s influence in the performance aftermarket began with the Chevrolet small-block V8, which became a staple of the performance industry after it debuted in production vehicles in 1955. Today, it remains the hot rod engine of choice for builders, whether they’re using a classic Gen 1 “350” or a latemodel “LS” Gen IV engine. “The Chevrolet small-block is the perfect combination of performance, durability and affordability,” says Jim Campbell, U.S. Vice President, Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. “It’s also very easy to modify, which makes it very popular with car enthusiasts.” This year at SEMA, Chevrolet Performance is showcasing several engines and initiating a new era in small-block performance with the LT1 small-block crate engine concept. The small-block Gen V LT1 production engine will be used in the all-new 2014 Corvette Stingray, making it the most powerful standard Corvette ever (460 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque with the available performance exhaust) — the result of complete reengineering for superior performance and efficiency with technologies that include Direct Injection, Continuously Variable Valve Timing and Active Fuel Management™ . Chevrolet Performance is also upgrading its existing small-block portfolio and showcasing some new enhancements to its crate powertrain systems with the addition of manual transmissions. PROVEN TRACK RECORD When it comes to racing, Chevrolet has a presence today in all of the premiere racing series — stock car, drag, road, open-wheel and sportsmen classes. Wherever Chevrolet has raced, they have left behind a lasting legacy, but most importantly, they still race to continuously explore new technology, push boundaries and find out what’s possible between man and machine. 26 I CHEVROLET SEMA 2013 EDITION CHEVY.COM I 27

Chevrolet Performance The racing technology from the C6.R race car program was put into the current 2014 Corvette Stingray. Engineers discovered a way to cool the engine by angling the radiator and allowing the air to pass upward through a hood extractor. By doing this, the engine is cooled and the vehicle achieves reduced lift and improved downforce — two benefits key to performance cars and racing. Last year, Chevrolet accounted for The C6.R race car also incorporates the use of lightweight materials, such as carbon fiber, with the goal of delivering a higher horsepower-to-weight ratio. This tested knowledge was applied to the 2014 Corvette Stingray, which has a carbon-fiber hood and carbon-fiber roof. Both of these elements reduce overall mass, and help lower the weight and center of gravity in the front of the vehicle, for a near 50 percent front and 50 percent rear weight distribution. “What we have on the Corvette Stingray is not race-inspired technology, it’s race-derived technology,” says Campbell. performance cars one of four in the United States PERFORMANCE ENHANCERS Chevrolet Performance announced these upgrades at SEMA: •U pgraded Small-Block Lineup – ZZ 383 Small-Block Now with 450 Horsepower New ZZ5 Small-Block with – 400 Horsepower sold •N ew Sonic Performance Parts One reason Chevrolet has a proven track record is because of what they refer to as technology transfer. It’s taking the engineering and design lessons learned from racing and applying them to production vehicle development. So although every consumer may not race for a living, each Chevrolet is designed and built with performance-enhancing systems and parts inspired by the same technology that makes its racing machines so legendary. “What we learn on the racetrack does help us build better production cars and powertrains for the showroom; that’s a fact,” says Campbell. “Vehicles like the Corvette are better because of our experiences in racing.” The technology transfer has helped deliver the nextgeneration Corvette Stingray. It has also been instrumental in developing the aerodynamics, durability, efficiency, cooling, lightweighting of performance systems and overall integration of other performance variants within the Chevrolet lineup, such as Camaro and SS. THE TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER In addition, Chevrolet is learning from participating in the IndyCar Series. The series requires the use of a V6 turbo engine with a 2.2-liter displacement. “We like the IndyCar Series because the advanced powertrain technologies used in it are exactly what we’re applying to our current production car powertrain lineup, as well as future developments,” says Campbell. “We’re learning a lot around direct injection and turbocharging, and putting that directly back into our advanced powertrain engineering for future applications.” CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT In addition to the technology transfer, Chevrolet heads to the racetrack because it’s a great place to train engineers. “In a fiercely competitive motorsports environment, where we’re racing against great competitors, you have to move fast with quality, because the next weekend the green flag is dropping whether you’re ready or not,” says Campbell. “These engineers work in the very fast-paced racing environment utilizing high-quality decision making and implementing solutions to win. They then take that same spirit of continuous improvement into Chevrolet production vehicle engineering around the world.” Chevrolet is also on the track to win championships. Winning attracts more people to the brand and creates more dialogue surrounding its award-winning products. Just visit any track where Chevrolet races prior to the flag dropping and you’ll discover the importance of this two-way conversation. “We always want to interact with our current and prospective Chevrolet customers and show them our race cars, new cars and trucks, parts and accessories,” says Campbell. “We want to listen to their feedback and understand what they want next, while showing them ways they can personalize their vehicle with accessories and performance parts.” The track is where shared passions for racing and iconic Chevrolet vehicles combine. It’s also where Chevrolet will continue to push the innovation of its vehicles and performance parts into the future — in the very spirit of its race car driving co-founder, Louis Chevrolet.
