t 4:30am most port macquarie residents are fast asleep their homes and streets are quiet and will remain so for several hours however for 22-year-old apprentice jockey melissa brown this hour of the morning and the hours ensuing are the most active and enjoyable time of her day six days a week from 4.30am brown participates in early morning track work where she puts prominent port macquarie trainer wayne wilkes horses through their paces and she does so with a smile on her face it has always been my passion ever since i was a tiny little girl it was my dream to be a jockey brown explains i would not want to do anything else in the world and with the success brown is enjoying why would she by the end of 2010 the 159.5 centimetre 53.5 kilogram brown had ridden an amazing 33 winners and featured in some of the biggest races in country new south wales she has claimed first and second place prizes on five-year-old horse `mr armstrong in the 2010 muswellbrook and taree-wingham cups and taken the five-year-old `ford to a memorable second in this a it has always been my passion ever since i was a tiny little girl it was my dream to be a jockey i would not want to do anything else in the world photo by kylie biltris 4 lifestyle magazine

year s port macquarie cup brown is nothing short of proud of such great results riding in races like that is so much more competitive than just the average race it has definitely improved my riding by miles it seems the early starts are paying off for the talented jockey brown s hard work is contributing to a growing reputation on the local racing scene however if her mother sue had her way during brown s younger years the pocket rocket would have been watching the horses past the winning post instead of riding them my mum was like `no way never it scared the hell out of her to think of me going that fast on a horse brown recalls despite her mother s fears it was inevitable brown would eventually saddle up and race these large magnificent animals at break-neck speeds her father glenn is a former apprentice jockey himself he gets out to as many of her races as he can and has always been supportive of his daughter s decision to become a jockey nanna betty and mum sue attend the meetings too and to sue s relief there are yet to be any major spills and only a few bruises on the injuries list although brown has experienced some success in her short career the job has had some downsides being an apprentice jockey is not only physically demanding but mentally consuming brown says training is very big you have to be fit and do large amounts of cardio work as well as be on top of your diet mentally you have to find time throughout the week to have a little `me time so you can chill out and relax for a bit on a social level brown has sacrificed nights out with friends because of her constant racing demands however she accepts the challenges friends are like `come on let s go out and have a few drinks and i have to remind them i m racing in a couple of days despite such a demanding routine the confident brown would not want her life any other way and loves working in her home town the same town where as a teenager she attended westport high school i really enjoy the lifestyle of port macquarie it is laid back yet the town is always growing and becoming more city like every day this is not to say brown does not possess the aspirations to compete against the finest in horse racing later in her career at the moment i know i am not quite up to that standard however it is my dream to be up against the best of them brown not only aspires to race the cream of the racing crop but acknowledges it is well within her grasp if she takes fellow country jockey corey brown as any sort of guide corey brown comes from taree wingham area so i idolize him as a jockey because he has come from a country area and been so successful brown explains for brown to imitate her namesake s success the early starts to the day will need to continue but brown does not mind she is fulfilling a childhood dream and doing so with a smile on her face by tony varapodio mel brown in action orange cap photo by alyson thompson www.lifestylepublications.com.au 5

did you know t hat during world war ii thousands upon thousands of bags of peas beans carrots and tomatoes left port macquarie for city markets and army camps excludes jewellery in the early 1940s they were grown on almost every hillside in port macquarie with some with mitch mckay gardens as large as 100 acres 40 ha such was the volume of the town s produce that in july 1940 growers met to form an agricultural bureau the bureau s objective was to have fruit trains stop at wauchope to pick up consignments for the sydney markets in the latter stages of the war a rural co-operative society was established to help with produce handling however from 1949 port macquarie had 15 consecutive years in which rainfall averaged 70 inches just under 1.8 metres crops were destroyed and gardens themselves destroyed and for the growers this spelt ruin by 1957 this co-op had branched into general retailing opening a large store in munster street and another in horton street port macquarie for a period of some 15 years after the war had more cultivated paddocks than it had houses other produce grown in port macquarie during this period were bananas grapes and pineapples the pineapples were of 3 varieties the queen pineapple the hawaiian prickly pineapple and the south sea islands prickly pine between 1922 1939 our pineapples were sent in case lots 18 per case all over nsw by rail for 10 shillings per case while the rural co-operative society closed for business in june 1978 its legacy will long be remembered massive summer sale plus many more for more information contact mitch mckay on 0447 429 016 or visit www.pmheritage.com.au shop 4b quay north clarence street port macquarie www.lifestylepublications.com.au phone 6584 9696 11

the natural way de-stress and re-balance so we have managed to survive another christmas and enter yet another new year after the lights come down and the christmas tree packed away friends and family have moved on it s time to re-establish some inner peace and balance christmas can be a stressful time and it s not always easy to rebalance when the body is stressed muscles tense and can stop the even flow of blood and removal of toxins this along with overly rich food and a tad too much drink leaves us feeling groggy and depressed when you start thinking about your detox programme this new year consider also a de-stress and re-balance programme for yourself so many of us see our hair stylists or nail technicians regularly or visit the gym for a regular workout so that we look good and feel good too each year we start a detox programme so we can clear our insides of all the rich food we have enjoyed over the festive season and all of this is good but rarely do we stop and be still allowing our body and mind to rest and re-charge when the mind is rested we are able to cope better with stresses that are constantly in our lives some stress is good but stress that remains unchecked becomes unhealthy and is detrimental to the health of our mind body and spirit a healthy diet and regular exercise are important in stress management but we also need to nurture ourselves with massages walks on the beach meditation and gentle exercise practices such as yoga so this year instead of thinking that you are toxic and overweight and need fixing why not consider that you actually are ok you just need some nurturing and begin the year with a programme of relaxation and stress management enquire at trendessence located at trendz 104 horton street where i am from wednesdays to saturdays to discuss a programme that will best suit you throughout the year and make this year a good year as it should be teresa wright massage therapist 0438 827 298 www.lifestylepublications.com.au 13
