do you know how to develop and produce a unique game what determines the success of a new game why do people of all ages find themselves glued to their computer screens for hours on end trying to get the hang of a game are the graphics so compelling is the storyline so captivating or is it the audio quality that mesmerises the user as a game programmer or visual artist you will become an expert in developing high-quality games using creative design concepts and graphic design skills and technology choiceoptions what s your talent when you apply for the international game architecture and design programme the first choice you have to make is whether you want to specialise in 3d visual art programming design and production or art technology for next generation entertainment click or no click ambitious practical highly skilled creative the games industry is very different from the ict industry creativity is a critical aspect you need to be visually 3d visual art programming passion the most important thing is probably that you have to be enthusiastic passionate even about game development and programming there is no place for a 9 to 5 mindset neither in your studies nor in your future career working long hours is the rule rather than the exception competitive game development is a highly competitive field you have to be good at managing your time and following instructions to measure up to the academic demands of the programme design and production oriented and you need to have good drawing and computer skills what s also important is a sense of aesthetics and spatial aptitude art technology for next generation entertainment 3 2

educational vision the heart of the programme is the game lab it is nhtv s in-house game development studio in which you work in multidisciplinary groups in our game development studio you apply your knowledge to practical situations and specialise according to individual interest in a real-life setting you will find out what game development is all about an additional advantage is that you get to develop solid business relationships throughout the entire programme you will spend an average one day a week working in the game lab as you progress in your course of study the games you produce become more complex andrew paquette lecturer in 3d visual art andrew paquette has been working professionally as an artist since 1986 and in the game industry since 1994 he worked in the united states for three of the biggest game developers thq sony and universal studios he began his career as an editorial illustrator for time magazine later he worked as an artist on comics such as hell-raiser and daredevil additionally he worked as an art director in the video games business on games including scooby-doo and unreal furthermore he contributed special effects work for the movies `space jam and `spider-man education by all lecturers within this programme have a wealth of practical experience in the games industry you will receive up-to-date instruction from people who have an in-depth understanding of the ins and outs of game production what s more guest speakers from the industry will be invited on a regular basis to share their knowledge with you professionals game lab international focus many members of the teaching staff as the games industry is an international industry this programme is fully in the study programme you as a student are open learn to respect them you will be in a class with dutch and foreign students enabling you to learn to cooperate and communicate in an international setting taught in english have international backgrounds and additionally to other cultures and ideas and you quite a lot of them are native english speakers that is why cross-cultural aspects are extensively covered `i have a great deal of work experience in video games and the movie industry and i discovered that it was quite difficult to find young talent applicants often did not have the appropriate skills to develop and design 3d computer games when i heard about this course in the netherlands it seemed like a great challenge to me to lift the students skills to a higher level what i enjoy enormously is that the first-year students have already learned so much they really have a great passion for this field 12 13
