independence years 7 and 8 offer new opportunities to students at king s a purpose built wing of the school with its own computer rooms social areas and spacious air conditioned classrooms provides a superb environment for our eleven to thirteen year old students under the care of four housemasters and housemistresses the students begin to establish themselves as independent learners taking increasing responsibility for their learning and actions with a carefully designed safety net beneath them students in year 7 and 8 spread their wings and are encouraged to demonstrate their leadership skills and capabilities with the guidance of specialist teachers seeing students striving all the time to realise their true potential and demonstrate how confident and capable they are becoming is a source of great pleasure for us during years 7 and 8 our students thrive academically and socially thanks to the positive atmosphere within the school and their increased independence personal goals are respected and celebrated extensively maintaining our students excellent approach to their studies some of our students would like to show you around and tell you what it is that makes them proud to be here we look forward to meeting you soon.

standards an enthusiasm for working hard is a noticeable characteristic of our students feeling successful is an important factor in helping inspire students and through careful setting and meaningful differentiation lessons are delivered at an appropriate pace for each student which helps to maintain their positive attitude developed over their years in the junior section of king s heads of year monitor and track the students performance and liaise with parents and teachers throughout year 7 and 8 together with the director of studies they compare measures of students potential with their actual performance and take steps to address any anomalies that emerge the work of the learning support department and regular opportunities for extension work offer teachers the opportunity to tailor the curriculum carefully to students needs.

challenge students enthusiastically try new activities in years 7 and 8 and thrive on the challenges that they are presented with as the range of extra-curricular opportunities expand in addition the year 7 and 8 musical makes use of the school s main theatre as the students creative aspirations grow and the wonderful porta library is made available to the most enthusiastic readers regular sporting tours and excursions overseas broaden what is offered to students at this point a positive attitude is nurtured ready for the full range of opportunities ahead in the senior section of king s «parents feel that they are supported their aspirations have been realised »

space as they become increasingly reflective learners and their social interaction takes on a new significance we offer the students their own social spaces one with table tennis tables a dedicated area of garden and a seating area and the other with tables and seating for quiet study or reading there are also three areas with computers which the students are encouraged to use for personal study and independent work within their wing of the building are the housemasters and housemistresses studies which offer students an easy point of contact with key members of staff the staff are on hand to celebrate successes deal with problems or offer some gentle advice this easy contact helps the students feel secure and confident and allows the staff to support sensitively.

ambition students in year 8 are encouraged to shoulder responsibilities around the school and may be chosen to be prefects librarians or monitors through their service to the school and by leading younger pupils our oldest students build their leadership capabilities which many of them will develop through the ely scheme in the years ahead personal goals and aspirations surface and students begin to make decisions about their targets for the future year 8 offers students the chance to feel they have achieved something special prior to moving to the larger environment of the senior section of king s moving on at the end of year 8 is a cause for celebration due to all that has been achieved in these formative years sights are set high and students feel excited about the adventure ahead « taking chances enjoying the adventure at school »
