daemen college faculty community news conference presentations susan krickovich elizabeth wright and lisa waterrose drewniak presented in november 2010 at the national conference for the teacher education division of the council for exceptional children in st louis mo their presentation was the fusion of academic after-school programs and master level special education teacher preparation a model program reviewed this presentation is currently being prepared as an article co-authored by liz wright and susan krickovich for submission to the journal of teacher education in special education kevin kegler and brenda young were co-presenters with educating for sustainability through campus and community service learning at naaee north american association of environmental educators meeting in buffalo and aashe association for advancement of sustainability in higher education in denver they also presented on north american mobility projectsustainability scholars at aashe poster in denver community projects outreach mary wolfe s edu 311 students provided free art classes to the just for kids after-school program in williamsville just for kids offers a variety of activities to enrich and support children s learning the parent organization is the synergy group of the niagara frontier inc which has provided programs for children for over 15 years kevin kegler and brenda young s class campus environmental service learning partnered with buffalo reuse for a month this fall activities included composting putting vegetable gardens to bed for the winter and assisting in re-tree events mary fox s ind 101 class and several students from jeremy hall s class attended our song dec 1st at the new phoenix theater the play was directed by daemen professor robert waterhouse and written by his father keith waterhouse robert s father was a well known and versatile british writer who died in 2009 the play was excellent and was highlighted by a question and answer session with our daemen students joining in the student s homework was to connect the core competencies to ideas from the play nursing students preparing for survey distribution with mrs ware at st john tower nursing students brainstorm ideas with carrie bryant for research topics with seniors at the bfnc moot center cscce news events daemen college center for sustainable communities and civic engagement winter 2010/11 community foundation for greater buffalo grant awarded for refugee teen empowerment program service learning program serve as mentors and tutors to refugee students enrolled at buffalo s lafayette high school offering exposure to college life and the possibility of college after high school this grant will have a lasting impact on the refugee youth who dream of attending college but find it so difficult to pass the regents examinations most of the students have spent their lives in refugee camps with little education available to them but still have the same accountability as native born us students for testing after one year in the country this award will play a significant role in helping these refugees graduate from high school and achieve their dream of college the community foundation for greater buffalo cfgb is a public charity holding more than 800 different charitable funds large and small established by individuals families nonprofit agencies and businesses to benefit western new york for additional information visit www.cfgb.org 6th annual environmental summit a success the center s annual environmental summit was held at daemen college on september 25 2010 this year s theme was this land is your land reclaiming your home your neighborhood your community the inspiring keynote presentation was given by aaron bartley executive director of push buffalo highlighting buffalos proud past and the exciting revitalization efforts currently happening in the city participants had a choice of workshops to attend including land use lead and radon awareness and building community through gardens a new addition to the summit this year that was very well received was a discussion group on greening your congregation the summit came to a close with a lively panel discussion on reclaiming your neighborhood and community upcoming events february 21 8:00 pm an evening with joel salatin nationally known organic farmer april 9 weatherization project in seneca babcock june 18 10:00 am-3:00 pm wny earth day family expo at the buffalo zoo september 24 cscce environmental summit at daemen college art and violence an exhibition of paintings by kevin kegler jim allen felice koenig all daemen vpa professors and ben perrone ran for a month at el buen amigo s gallery in downtown buffalo and was extremely well-attended students from the vpa s arts administration program mounted both a visual arts show and a community forum discussion as part of their work for a graduate class towards the end of the show members of buffalo s community gathered to listen to speakers from the stop the violence coalition and to discuss the escalating toll of deaths by violence in our community students katie riley and alicia tos organized the events which were filmed by ynn as part of their work for their bs/ms degrees in arts administration passage by felice keonig daemen college has received a grant of $29,042 from the community foundation for greater buffalo for the college s refugee teen empowerment program coordinated by the daemen center for sustainable communities civic engagement since 2003 daemen college students and faculty have provided direct services to refugees living on the west side of buffalo through the daemen college-west side partnership the grant will make high school diplomas and a college education possible for refugee students who come to buffalo after escaping strife and often war in their native countries the focus of the daemen refugee teen empowerment program is regents exam preparation and high school graduation accomplished through tutoring sessions coordinated by the daemen center for sustainable communities civic engagement students in the daemen daemen students take part in extreme makeover project designed and directed by students in dr fox s ind 101 starring mrs triggs with assistance from cscce and mrs davis top left mrs triggs explains her mission of preventing another house from ending up in the landfill top right ind students enjoy a free breakfast from a generous neighbor bottom right workers extraordinaire they never took a break bottom left students putting on their much needed masks the center partners daemen college and its students with communities to promote civic responsibility leading to communities that are healthy safe and vital and will remain so for sustainable living and food over columbus day break keynote speakers anna lappe and sandra steingraber phd received rave reviews in addition there were 30 exhibitors 15 workshops pumpkin awards for area farmers created by mary wolf students and a wonderful creative vegetarian lunch prepared by amy jo decarlo and her crew

cscce seneca-babcock news events heck weatherization cscce fruitbelt news events first annual gary l milton dinner service learning works to revitalize seneca babcock a service learning class taught by instructor bill parke was at the leading edge of neighborhood revitalization initiatives in the seneca babcock neighborhood this semester called community planning and sustainability gvt 228 the class partnered with art robinson president of the seneca babcock community block club the cscce and executives from the wny railway historical society to investigate home weatherization practices and concepts for a rail museum and recreational trail/streetcar line on former brownfield and railway lands near the buffalo river wny railway historical society planners have envisioned reusing the buildings and rail tracks on lee street as a site for excursion trains rail and steelmaking museums and other cultural attractions for the weatherization aspect of this fall s class mr parke an urban planner with the city of buffalo who is also certified by the american planning association and ten students from daemen college researched the weatherization of homes as a practical way to help middle and low income house owners and renters save money on energy bills live in healthier homes and help the environment with more discretionary money that comes from energy savings and better health families can improve their financial situation which can also lead to stronger neighborhoods students participated in the home energy efficiency kit/apollo alliance workday in the seneca babcock neighborhood in october undertaking actual weatherization work on older homes students who worked on the rail museum aspect of the class enjoyed a tour of the proposed rail museum site and attended a press conference where plans for the museum were unveiled research and analysis inside and outside the classroom culminated in a presentation by the students to the seneca babcock block club at their december meeting learning about our growing world at reinstein woods field trips and activities for students at buffalo s mlk multicultural institute in partnership with daemen service learning students this fall professor kim charmatz developed a course to expand the partnership environmental education in the community ind 214 activities included nature walks composting documenting the deer population at tifft nature preserve and learning about the environmental history of wny kudos to dr charmatz and mlk staff for solving transportation and scheduling problems above service to the fruit belt award winners sharon benz altheria ware lauren breen growing our world was initiated last spring during global youth service day the mission of the program is to provide environmental information ellicott district council member dr curtis haynes listens attentively to dinner attendees each year the cscce partners with wny apollo alliance to weatherize 50 homes in a disadvantaged neighborhood in buffalo through the home energy conservation kit heck project on october 2 volunteers from daemen college university at buffalo and the trade unions worked on 20 homes in seneca babcock along with educating homeowners on where to locate additional resources for better home energy efficiency the remaining 30 homes will be completed on april 9 2011 volunteers received a two hour training from the district council 4 allied painters after the weatherization was completed an inspector checked for gas and carbon monoxide leaks at each residence significant leakage was detected at a number of homes making the importance of this project even greater funding for the heck project came from common councilmember richard fontana and council president david franczyk honeywell inc provided weatherization supplies for 50 homes united way day of caring kids2college program at the seneca street church developed by the sallie mae fund and the national council for community and education partnerships the kids2college program is a series of in-class lessons that culminates in a half-day on the partner college campus the project aims to provide information to students and families to help them understand college and career choices and promote finanin february of 2009 new york state higher cial literacy education services corporation hesc was the children attended eight sessions that named as a lead agency to administer an $8.2 covered education options career exploration federal grant for the college access challenge and attending and paying for college each of grant program last year in response to a call the participants did a presentation to the group for proposals from hesc admissions represenon a career option of interest to them on their tatives from alfred state college daemen last day the students visited daemen college college and d youville college collaborated for a tour a talk from the admissions with the commission on independent colleges department and a picnic lunch and universities to develop a project that would engage middle school students in the city of buffalo in learning about local college opportunities the project was awarded a competitive two-year grant of $400,000 this summer as part of this program 25 middle school children from the seneca babcock neighborhood participated in a kids2college fruit belt united president ronnie speed leads members in for introductions fruit belt reading camp 2010 our 5th annual fruit belt reading camp at the aloma d johnson fruit belt community charter school was held from july 6-15 2010 many thanks go to our daemen college special education graduate students who teach the children and project flight for donating books special thanks to the providence fund which provides camp supplies final celebration refreshments and backpacks with school supplies for the campers we truly could not do this event without them daemen faculty and staff help spruce up the friendly fruit belt block club community gardens block club members are still talking about what great workers they were and want them back next year mrs altheria ware president of the block club is interviewed by yuri yamada during the event yuri is a graduate of ub and filmmaker from hokkaido japan who finds many interesting stories in the fruit belt nys comes through decade old community plans are beginning to become a reality check out the new wall trees and sidewalk along the kensington expressway between jefferson ave and locust st summer picnic in the fruit belt senior nursing students from daemen present their findings from their survey of seneca babcock residents on signs and symptoms of pre-diabetes celebrating fruit belt youth with food face painting and even pony rides at the gary l milton playground and locust street art.
