you may have noticed on the cover the image of a polaroid camera and instant photos developing that image ties in to the theme of this year s magazine change and development welcome to collage the middle school literary magazine middle school is a time of change students develop physically mentally emotionally and spiritually this is evident especially now at the end of the year the once bashful seventh graders have become wise in the ways of the school the eighth graders once so bored of school now have excitement visible in their eyes as they get closer and closer to becoming highschoolers development being such a theme in the lives of middle-schoolers showed up readily in the works submitted in visual art we see caterpillars turn into butterflies as well as vivid drawings of roads with unseen destinations just out of view the prose features a disappointed girl who develops into a more thankful individual a teenager who grows to accept the things she cannot do and an unsure baseball team that changes from being unsure to a team full of winners the poetry in this year s magazine describes the theme beautifully we see poetry about unsure new students who change to become well aware of how to make it through school many students wrote meta-poetry poetry about the change from a blank page to a poem also featured is a poem about a girl who stared at a time when she shouldn t have and eventually developed a new perspective on staring development is also seen in the seasons and in this year s magazine we see poetry about all seasons and the changes that they each bring another aspect of cameras is the perspective when we see a photo we see only one person s point of view through collage we bring to light the perspectives of many different middle schoolers we hope that by reading this magazine you develop a more complete knowledge of the lives of middle schoolers and the way change and development affect each one of them leah schwartz editor in chief

snow days soft white snowflakes fall drifting down from the cold gray sky covering the ground in a smooth blanket laughter and joy come from children as they run across playing and smiling in the freezing air large sleds slide down the tall hill leaving tracks behind them snowballs small and round are made to be thrown at others just walking by despite the chilly winds wet boots and gloves come off as people go inside for hot chocolate and warmth on this snow day dina rabinovitz reflection black and white photograph rotem shoshani 4

the shadows by ethan steinberg the shadows had started to creep across the first base line even before the first pitch had been thrown bringing with them an icy chill that sent shivers up your spine it had been a season of dreams from the first day of tryouts through an undefeated season and all they way to today the championship game we had taken the number one seed never even being challenged a pair of mercy-rule victories had gotten us here and given us a little too much confidence our number two pitcher was on the mound and he was looking great the first batter struck out swinging and it all went downhill from there the next batter rolled over an outside pitch and hit a weak dribbler to our second baseman he fielded it cleanly and threw it into the fans behind first base putting the runner on second the next batter hit a sharp grounder right to our second baseman and it went through his legs by the end of the inning he had four errors and they had put five runs on the board he came back in threw his glove on the ground and started screaming obscenities the bench was dead silent except for the sound of sunflower seeds being cracked the next three innings went scoreless and the shadows crept even farther making it seem like the few fans we had had disappeared we pulled back in the next inning getting within 1 there was a feeling on the bench that can t be described a closeness that had been missing all season but had emerged right when we needed it our pitcher was nearing 100 pitches and in any other circumstances he would have been pulled but he was pitching the game of his life and we needed him to we held them scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when we got our final at-bats a couple of quick hits tied the game up with our second baseman coming up he worked the pitcher to a full count it seemed like the whole world was holding their breath for the next pitch ball four he took his base turned and took a medium lead on the first pitch he stole second base and was safe the next hitter drove a single past the second baseman to score him and we d won suddenly we were all jumping we were stiff from sitting around in the cold but that didn t matter someone brought out a soda bottle and we started spraying it around we dumped the cooler on our coach and maybe just maybe the shadows faded a little 6

balance i look out at the world and see freedom i see the little boy on the sidewalk riding his bicycle without stress or worry just smiling and feeling the wind in his hair i look out at the world and see struggle i see the single mother sitting with her head in her hands with a baby crying next to her and no one to guide her steps or teach her what to do i look out at the world and see patience i see the senior in high school sitting at the kitchen table and tapping his left foot waiting for replies hoping the envelopes are thick i look out at the world and see violence i see the soldiers with guns across their backs preparing for battle after writing letters to their families and hoping they re not their last i look out at the world and see balance i see day and then night the sun and then the moon the clouds above and the sea below and i notice how it all fits together just like a puzzle it can t be complete unless you have all the pieces tessa silverman 8 harlequin plaster aaron nadler

girls on the ceiling black and white film sydney green if only i had known i remember the moment clearly i was a little girl probably about 5 waiting in line for a ride at hershey park and then i saw her i saw the girl i saw her missing hand and the only thing i could do was stare i stared for what seems like forever looking back on it and now i can t imagine how much i hurt her feelings that stare that i gave this girl is a stare i have gotten so many times in my lifetime not because of a missing hand but because of a scar a scar that sits above my lip that represents my strength makes me unique and represents my bravery but some people don t see it in a positive light and they stare at me their eyes looking at me so intently makes me want to disappear and now looking back on how i stared at that poor girl i feel such guilt if only i had known what this look could do to someone if only i had known sara migler 9
