dictionary a community is a group of people with shared interests living in close proximity to one another the rockland jewish community is indeed just that for although we are a diverse people we are bound by a shared set of values a commitment to helping those in need an emphasis on educating our youth and a dedication to speaking up for what we believe in at jcc rockland we take these values seriously as they form the basis of change4change a new teen-led global project dedicated to the memory of the 11 israelis killed at the 1972 munich olympics in coordination with the jcc maccabi games set for 2012 in rockland and sponsored by active international and good samaritan hospital change4change aims to address the core jewish value of feeding the hungry by fighting against hunger in rockland and israel our goal is to collect 11 million coins ­ one million for each of the munich 11 ­ and make a lasting significant impact on the lives of hungry people in november following the official launch of change4change ankie spizter wife of slain fencing coach andre spitzer came to rockland to meet with middle and high school students at many of the local public schools as well as students at reuben gittelman hebrew day school and ashar and leaders throughout the community during the course of her presentations the jcc announced the launch of a new educational website munich11.org which will tell the story of the munich 11 and provide educational resources for rockland and the global community at its core the story of the munich 11 is about terrorism a topic that resonates deeply in our own lives it is also a story of hope and the importance of educating our young people providing them with the tools to create a world of peace and brotherhood in which all nations can flourish 2012 will mark the 40th anniversary of the 1972 olympics and the fateful day that 11 israelis lost their lives in the last four decades the olympic games have never included a moment of silence in honor of those killed in munich ankie spitzer and the munich 11 families have spent the last thirty-eight years petitioning the olympic committee and jcc rockland will add its voice in support of a formal tribute to those who died as we approach our own set of games in 2012 we believe that the world needs to take a moment from the joy and excitement of the olympic games to acknowledge the munich 11 and the horrifying toll terrorism can have on people and communities feeding the hungry educating our young people speaking up for what you believe in these three values come together as we work toward our twin goals of collecting eleven million coins and hosting the best set of jcc maccabi games in 2012 our ability to accomplish these goals will be a testament to the power of community ­ our community ­ to come together to achieve great things we encourage you to volunteer and get involved in these two exciting endeavors ­ and to join in helping celebrate the jewish values that make us a community now sit back and take a look through our latest program guide detailing all of the programs and events we have planned for winter 2011 from the jcc rockland
