SPRINGSTON SCHOOL A: 16-20 Leeston Road, Springston 7616 P: 03-329-5724 F: 03-329-5731 29 November 2013 From the Principal Kia ora koutou E: office@springston.school.nz W: www.springston.school.nz B: springstonschoolnews.blogspot.com After a week of ‘iffy’ weather we can breath a sigh of relief that our PTA Celebrating Summer Evening Market will go ahead at 5 pm tonight - and it looks like we won’t need rain coats! We have over 20 market stalls including clothing, plants, jewellery, cheeses, sauces, baking, face painting, skin care and Xmas decorations. Our children have also been busy making items for their class stalls, including ipad bags, recycled paper, bath bombs, fake blood, pet rocks, Xmas cards, lanterns, wood signs, worm fertiliser and a variety of ‘outdoor living’ items. You should be able to do all your Christmas shopping tonight! See you there. Adventure Learning Centre aka New Playground: Great excitement yesterday when, not long after the morning's excellent presentation to parents by the Playground Inquiry Team, the concept plans for our new Adventure Learning Centre arrived by courier! We can’t publish pictures of the plan because of copyright, but you can check out the draft plans displayed in our school foyer. This is going to be a truly unique facility, designed specifically for our children - and we owe it all to the dedicated Playground Inquiry Team who have worked all year, with Wendy and Carol, to ensure we build a facility that meets our needs and is fun to play on. Now all we need is the money to pay for it!! Basic Facts-a-thon: This student initiative is part of the fund raising for the new playground. We have had a school wide focus this year on learning basic facts, and next Tuesday everyone will be tested. Your children will have had this information at home for a few weeks now. Any sponsorship is very much appreciated - no amount is too small ..... or too big! Saying Thank You: Next Thursday we host our annual ‘thank you’ social hour - a chance for staff to acknowledge all of those who have helped the school in some way throughout the year. This will take place in the library between 5.30 and 6.30 pm. We sincerely hope you are able to join us for all or part of this time. Final Assembly: Hopefully you all have this date in your diary - we have been advertising it all term through this newsletter. As in previous years this important event will take place in the Lincoln Primary School Hall at 7pm on Thursday 12 December. All children are expected to be at this assembly. I had an absolutely, positively wonderful week in Wellington with our Year 8 class last week - check out the pictures in this newsletter. Ngā mihi ki a koutou katoa Liz Weir, Principal Springston Wishing Tree 2013  Toys placed under the Christmas tree in the office will be donated to the City Mission to help family's that can't afford Christmas presents.  Please bring any unwanted toys from home that are suitable for Christmas presents not old McDonalds toys please!!!  Thanks very much for your help. Jess & Adele Pope Meadow Fresh Competition Yesterday when we came to school Zoe B and Zarah found two big boxes in the office. The boxes were full of sports and art gear from Meadow Fresh. We now have heaps of sports and art gear. Thanks to everyone that put stickers in as every sticker counted. Zoe B Organiser

COMING UP November 29 Sushi Learning Celebration Thank You Last Monday on the 18th November I made a coin trail to fundraise for the philippines and I raised (with the help of everyone) $142.  Thank-you all for the donations. It will go to Mrs Brice who will give it to the organisation that helps the Philippines. Thank-you. Annabelle R7. A Poet in the Making Molly (R3, age 6) entered 4 poems in ‘The Second Fabulous Poetry Competition’, run by NZ author Paula Green, who runs The Poetry Box. Molly wasn't eligible to win as she wasn’t part of a school entry. However, Paula loved her poems! Here’s what she had to say about Molly’s poems: “I could tell that this was a girl who loved reading and writing. These poems are magical and musical and a joy to read. She told me she wrote The Great Blue (what a cool name for a poem) after a trip to Quail Island on the ferry and that her long hair was wavy like the waves. I love the mole poem because it made me smile and it has fun rhyme to read. And I loved The Shadow poem bcause it is mysterious (and it has a cool drawing). And Night time Night time poem is very juicy indeed. What a great job Molly.” Here’s the link so you can check out the poems for yourself: http:// nzpoetrybox.wordpress.com/2013/11/page/5/ December 4 BOT 5 Parent Helpers Drinks 6 Subway 9 Year 8 Dinner 12 Final Assembly 7pm 13 Sushi Reports Home 16 Certificates and Music Assembly 1.30pm 17 Picnic Day 18 School finishes 12pm 2014 February 3 Goal Setting Day 6 Waitangi Day 7 School Closed Swimming Pool Keys These are now available for purchase from the school office.
