SPRINGSTON SCHOOL A: 16-20 Leeston Road, Springston 7616 P: 03-329-5724 F: 03-329-5731 1 November 2013 From the Principal Kia ora koutou E: W: B: Some big events have been ticked off the list in the last two weeks. The Senior Athletic Sports ran like clockwork last Thursday, thanks to Wendy’s planning and event management. On Wednesday the choir performed at the World Vision ‘Kids for Kids’ concert at Wigram and were well supported by Springston parents and whanau. Yesterday was Pet Day, and Allana is to be congratulated once again on her organisation of this key annual event. Education Review Office Report Our confirmed ERO report has been received and I am extremely proud to be able to share it with you all. The link on our school website will be updated as soon as the report goes on-line. Staff have been choosing the statements they are most proud of, and these include: “Students are proud of their school and well engaged in their learning”, “The school provides a safe place for students to take a risk”, “students are supported to build learning connections with other students and with other teachers”, “providing very good support for students who are at risk of underachieving”, and “ an innovative student leadership programme is a significant feature of the school.” Please ask at the office if you would like a full copy of the ERO report. 2014 Class Placements The process of organising classes for the 2014 academic year is underway. We are currently looking at our 2013 year group numbers and working out a variety of options for classes for 2014. We will be starting the new year with 11 classes in operation and will be juggling rooms until our new learning spaces are completed at the beginning of March. Class placement is a complex process in which we consider the most appropriate groupings for children with whom they will collaborate and learn for the following year. Children’s academic and social needs are taken into account when being placed. As educational professionals the staff know your children very well. However, if there are any extraordinary circumstances that you believe we are not aware of, and which may need to be considered when determining class placements, please put these in writing to me, or e-mail ( by Thursday 14 November. Parent opinion will be considered alongside of teachers professional judgement. Late requests and those that request specific teachers will not be considered. All our teachers do a fantastic job! Class placements for 2014 will be included in the end-of-year report in December. Sunhats We are being vigilant in reinforcing the sunhat policy. Children without a hat will not be allowed outside at break times. It is amazing how quickly some hats have been found!! Please ensure hats are named. Children new to the school are provided with a free sunhat. We are currently waiting on an order of hats to arrive. New Adventure Playground Our senior student Playground Inquiry Team is keen to update the Springston School Community on their findings and recommendations for our new Adventure Playground. You are invited to a presentation, with time for questions and answers, on Thursday 28 November, from 9:00 am until 10:40 am, followed by morning tea. Ngā mihi ki a koutou katoa Liz Weir, Principa
