issue 11 november 2010 welcome welcome to the eleventh edition of the mfl sunderland primary newsletter which is a special christmas edition the aim of the newsletter is to keep all primary school mfl teachers informed of the latest developments in primary language teaching nationally regionally and within the local authority previous editions of the newsletter can be found on the mfl sunderland website at www.sunderlandschools.org/mfl-sunderland/primary-newsletters.htm i would love to hear your comments and feedback about the newsletters please email them to clare.seccombe@gmail.com the white paper wednesday 24th november saw the publication of the long-awaited schools white paper the importance of teaching as far as languages are concerned it s encouraging news for mfl teachers in secondary schools where a gcse in another language will be one of the five gcses required for the english baccalaureate however there is no mention in the white paper of primary languages michael gove s letter to schools about the white paper http tinyurl.com/gove-letter states that the curriculum review covering both primary and secondary will be launched shortly we intend to publish the new curriculum in the autumn of 2012 with first teaching in september 2013 this is a long time to have to wait for a decision about primary languages the white paper states that this new curriculum should set out clearly the core knowledge and understanding that all children should be expected to acquire in the course of their schooling we will therefore ask teachers to work with us to review the national curriculum in order to reform it the curriculum should embody rigour and high standards and outline a core of knowledge in the traditional subject disciplines what needs to be clarified is the status of mfl in the curriculum is it part of the core knowledge and understanding is it one of the traditional subject disciplines this paragraph depending on how you interpret the punctuation suggests that it might be 4.27 there is much of value that children need to learn and experience which sits outside the traditional subject disciplines the languages sciences humanities and mathematics which make up national curricula across the globe so we will ensure there is space in the school day and resources for school leaders to guarantee a truly rounded education for all cilt the national centre for languages and all the association of language learning have both published responses to the white paper and both express their concern at its lack of reference to primary languages primary languages are viewed as a great success so far and we certainly do not want to lose this momentum and waste all the hard work that has been done so far teaching a language to all ks2 pupils would bring us in line with the high-performing countries which form such a crucial point of reference of the white paper so until we receive more information learning a language in ks2 remains an entitlement for all ks2 pupils please continue to make full use of all the support offered to you at la level while it is still there the white paper can be found here http tinyurl.com/whitepaper-24nov
