Beauty from Within With today’s bustling and often As Lou Dartford, Professional Makeup Artist and beauty blogger says: “No pressured lifestyles our skin, hair and nails are the first to show signs of tiredness, stress and poor nutrition. They reflect our lifestyle and our diet and we often end up covering up these signs with make-up, lotions and potions. There are an enormous number of choices for products to put on the outside but what you take inside can have a huge impact on the look and feel of your skin, hair and nails. The Essential Fatty Acids Omega 3 and 6 are two of the most lacking nutrients in our modern diets and as these are so important to the cells that make up our skin, hair and nails without them our skin can feel dry, our hair lacklustre and our nails brittle. In this booklet we explore the importance of Essential Fatty Acids for beauty and invite you to take our 6 Week Challenge – simply pour or mix 2 to 3 tablespoons a day into your food or drink and see and feel the difference. matter what products you use, it can be tough to create a flawless look, a lustrous hairstyle or the perfect manicure if the canvas you are working with is lacking vitality from within” Introduce the right nutrients into your diet and see the difference in your skin, hair and nails. 3

The make up of a healthy cell All cells need protein, water, vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids Omega 3 and 6 to operate at their best. However, our diets in the UK tend not to provide the right quantity or balance of Essential Fats. Without these fats our cells become prone to dehydration and inflammation. Essential Fatty Acids are lacking in our diets due partly to the ‘phobia’ we have around eating fats and oils and partly due to the fact they are damaged by modern food processing techniques. Including Udo’s Choice Ultimate Oil Blend in our diets is the easiest way of increasing our intake of Essential Fatty Acids to help cells operate at their best. Vitamins Essential Fatty Acids Minerals Cell Water Protein What are Essential Fatty Acids? Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) are just that - essential. The body cannot produce them itself so we need to include them in our diet. There are two Essential Fatty Acids Omega 3 Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA) Omega 6 Linoleic Acid (LA) These are not the Omega 3 and 6 you find in fish oils (DHA and EPA), which are non-essential and can be made by the body. If we have enough ALA in our diets for instance, the body converts what it needs into the DHA and EPA that fish oils provide and retains the rest. 4

Udo’s Choice for Glowing Skin Radiant, healthy skin that literally glows with vitality comes from nourishing ourselves from within by eating a healthy, balanced diet, which includes Omega 3 and 6 in enough quantity and in the right ratio. These omega oils keep the proteins in our pores soft and prevent them from drying out as they need these ‘good’ fats to retain water – essentially moisturising the skin from within. They also support the skin’s own natural defences and protect cells from ageing stress. Because all cell membranes are made up of fat, their integrity is determined in large part by the type of fat we eat. Researchers believe that diets containing large amounts of saturated or hydrogenated fats produce cell membranes that are hard and lack fluidity whilst diets rich in Essential Fatty Acids Omega 3 and 6, produce cell membranes with a high degree of fluidity allowing nutrients in and waste out. If the cells are healthy then the skin, hair and nails which they form look and feel healthy too. “Since using Ultimate Oil Blend my concealer has virtually been made redundant! Now I use make-up to enhance my features, not mask them.” Jemma Kidd, Make-Up Artist & Columnist

Naturally Beautiful You deserve naturally beautiful, radiant skin. Every cell in your body needs Omega 3 and 6, and as the skin is the least important organ in the body it is the last to receive these Essential Fats and the first to lose them. If you are significantly deficient in Essential Fats it could take up to 6 to 8 weeks for them to shine through in the skin. When it does, you know that the cells throughout your body are getting the omega oils they need. Essential Fats and Acne When pores in the skin become clogged, bacteria move in and have a feast, the immune system then fights them, and this can lead to acne. So what clogs the pores? If people get too little Omega 3 and 6, or get the wrong ratio, and instead eat saturated fats that are harder, don’t flow well, and don’t keep proteins in our pores from drying out, the clogging of pores is promoted. The Linoleic Acid (Omega 6) found in Ultimate Oil Blend is used by the sebaceous glands as a normal component of sebum, the oily substance that prevents our skin and hair from drying out. Sebum made with Linoleic Acid is calming to the skin and follicles. When not enough Omega 6 is available in the skin, the sebaceous glands produce sebum with Oleic Acid. This form of sebum is irritating to the skin, causing pores to block leading to blackheads, whiteheads and acne. At the same time Alpha-Linonlenic Acid (Omega 3), the other Essential Fatty Acid, keeps cells soft and prevents them from drying and flaking off. Both Omega 3 and 6 oils flow well, and effectively carry cellular debris and toxins to the surface of the skin, from where they can be removed with water or a gentle cleanser. The fundamental fix is to get more ‘good’ fats and less ‘bad’ fats. “Good fats help us to look more beautiful because they moisturise the skin from the inside” Janey Lee Grace, Broadcaster & Author 6

Essential Fats and Inflammation Omega 3 is anti-inflammatory so this can help with any inflammation problems of the skin caused initially by dryness and cracking. Without Essential Fatty Acids the skin can become prone to: ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ Dryness Dandruff Inflammation Sunburn Cracked heels Stretch marks during pregnancy Inflammation can be worsened by processed cooking oils (also found in convenience foods) and when our diet is particularly low in Omega 3 compared to Omega 6. Processing damages the fragile EFAs and simply replacing these processed oils with undamaged oils can help with skin inflammation. Omega 3 rich oils in particular support the body’s anti-inflammatory processes, Essential Fats and Sunburn Essential Fatty Acids help the skin retain moisture which may allow you to stay out in the sun for longer. This gives us the opportunity to soak in the vitamin D the Sun provides which SPF lotions largely prevent us from getting. Of course this does not protect us from over exposure to the sun so care should still be taken by applying SPF when necessary.

Udo’s Choice for healthy hair Regular blow-drying, curling, straightening, crimping, and backcombing Many hair salons now offer ultra healthy juices to drink, created specially to boost hair health from the inside out whilst the stylist gets to work. You can do the same by mixing Ultimate Oil Blend in with a healthy smoothie. Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA) is an Omega 6 fatty acid that may help with the healthy growth of hair. There is also some evidence that Omega 6 deficiency can cause hair loss - again boosting the importance of Essential Fatty Acids intake. The body converts the Linoleic Acid from Ultimate Oil Blend into GLA, but to ensure good quantities of this wonder Omega 6, Udo added one of nature’s best sources of GLA, Evening Primrose Oil, to his oil blend. colouring can take their toll on the look and feel of hair. Udo’s Choice for super strong nails Like skin and hair, nails are a key indicator of our natural beauty and brittle nails can plague any beauty regime. Even though many of us like our acrylics there is nothing quite like showing off our own natural nails. Once again, one of the key deficiencies is the lack of Omega 3 and 6 that help nail cells work at their best. A daily intake of Ultimate Oil Blend can give them the nutrition they need to maintain their integrity, helping to protect the nails from damage. “Upping my intake of Essential Fatty Acids made a great difference to my skin. I also saw a huge improvement in my nails, they now grow long and strong and very rarely break” Louise Dartford, Make-Up Artist & Beauty Blogger 9

Three reasons to trust Udo’s Choice ✓ The Ratio The ratio of Omega 3 to 6 is crucial - too much of either can lead to dry, chapped and damaged skin, lacklustre hair and brittle nails. It is generally accepted that the ideal ratio of Omega 3 to 6 in the body is around 1 : 1. However, modern diets tend to provide us with a lot less Omega 3 than 6. Estimates range from 1 : 7 to 1 : 20 Omega 3 to 6! That is why Ultimate Oil Blend has a ratio of 2 : 1 Omega 3 to 6 to rebalance these fats in the body to around 1 : 1. Ratio after 30ml Ultimate Oil Blend circa 1:1 Ratio before Ultimate Oil Blend EU Average 1:8 5.5g 12.5g 1.5g 10.5g 1.5g 10.5g Ω3 Ω6 Ω= Omega Ω3 Ω6 ✓ The Quality Omega 3 and 6 are both easily damaged through food processing techniques and heating during cooking (particularly frying) so many of the oils that we consume do not offer the health and beauty benefits they should. It is therefore important to reduce as much of our intake of damaged oils as possible and replace with undamaged and unprocessed oils like those found in Ultimate Oil Blend. ✓ The Quantity If the total quantity of Omega 3 and 6 we are getting through our daily diets is inadequate then an increase in both is needed for keeping our skin, hair and nails in great shape. Adding just 2 to 3 tablespoons of Ultimate Oil Blend to our food daily is all that is needed to bring the ratio of Omega 3 to 6 closer to 1 : 1 and also the total quantity of both to sufficient levels. “Oily fish is great, but it can be tough to eat enough, which is why I always carry my bottle of Ultimate Oil Blend with me” Amanda Hamilton, TV Nutritionist 11
