a 1973 classic and the caprice too eep purple broke out with that song back in 1973 a time when a lot of us can look back and remember the sounds of those rock groups intertwining seamlessly with that beautiful breakout period of popular muscle cars and lowriders that era brings back the memories of the elegant looks that defined the caprice classic its wide body and bob-tail truck length style instantly ascended the car to the top of the throne in the lowrider kingdom at the time now don t get me wrong some ford ltd brougham owners would beg to disagree and argue with me for days about that still those times never fail to bring back the memories of these quintessential rides which chauffeured wedding processions quinceaneras prom nights and of course high school football homecoming halftime parade shows the early caprice classic for 1973 offered a stiffer and more comfortable suspension a higher grade cloth and vinyl used on the seats couches as well as thicker carpet and the optional vinyl top that added a luxurious style and class to the vehicle it is said that a chevrolet g.m named this model caprice because it was the name of his favorite restaurant he frequented when visiting new york city of all the lowrider chevrolet favorites there are some guys well actually quite a few who will argue that these particular 72 and 73 roof lines were even better than the following glass house model landaus these two models of caprice were certainly the baddest lowriders of the era maybe even of all time definitely top three or four for me i ll have to admit the extra cosmetics these rides came with the side skirts moon roofs and tilt steering oh man they just commanded ownership and respect while on the streets as deep purple s smoke on the water may have been playing through the craig power play stereo sounds mounted underneath their dashes we all knew that the now famed song really meant the 520s were melting while cruising these overweight beauties down the streets thus wearing out the rubber tread on those premium sportways the custom painter at pete s auto body known as brocha delivers a multi-colored beauty of a caprice classic to this month s cover issue of lowrider and it s a shame that we don t display these quality 70s aircraft carriers at least five times a year up here on front street there are plenty of these living room-sized rides out there just not enough of them as lowriders the legendary design of cars like these blew up the lowrider movement back then and we are still riding the waves of that movement today in order for lowriding to continue and survive we need to go back to those days and re-visit these luxury cars just to see why they were so popular let these pristine machines grow on you as they did back in those days when they virtually forced everybody to trade in their 60s for the 72s through the 76s hey we can t go on as an automotive culture sport by focusing only on building 59s 62s and 64s there aren t that many left to do anyways dare to be different normal d is boring building lowriders is a hobby/sport where we all show our personalities through customizing our rides the challenge of not looking like the next car is what this gig is all about and we need to step out of the box this includes you guys from the new school study these cars and their looks and do your homework it s all about tradition man august starts off the celebration of honoring legends past as we introduce the hall of fame s class of 09 richard ochoa our lifetime honor award recipient a.k.a mr arizona and mr society car club and lowrider legend himself finally comes through the hall s doors joining him is harvey reyes who established himself throughout his life and lowriding times as a leader and role model for his famed car club carnales unidos the meaning of the club s name portrays this man s character the memorial award is respectfully handed over to louis barr barrios from the lifestyle car club whose loss can only be summarized with the saying only the good die young big lou s twenty years as a dedicated lowrider brought out sincere respect from all other car clubs and friends many of whom knew him personally as a saint who gave the right advise when you were down on your luck his blue flakedout monte matches the skies he now cruises the craftsmanship honor goes out to the classiest family of car builders you will ever meet yes the tovars representing them in this upcoming class of 09 is brother eddie tovar a professional in the field of building unique quality rides whom you can read about in this special coverage of the hall of fame the raza report spotlights latinos in hollywood so put your sunglasses on and enjoy the first part of this series it s show time we kicked off the lowrider tour this year in arizona where hundreds of rides and thousands of people from the well-known super bowl town gathered for one more tailgate party at the state fair grounds this month s car club feature is represented by a dedicated group of guys and collectors who are united in partnership united in agreement are self confident are without interruption standing shoulder to shoulder for over three decades they are called together as we come to the end of the line or should i say the pinstripping line the fast and the furious expert mr mike lamberson opens up his secret box of colors and brushes for all to see once you get that paint job just let mike color the rest of your world as he is portrayed in this month s original segment the more things change the more they stay the same is what they say anyways until the next issue joe ray you have to look badass to get harassed open up those moons or lay down those rags it s summer and the cops are out there waiting for your autograph on a driving-too-low ticket www.storemags.com www.fantamag.com
