editor s letter we re all hotrodders lowriders at heart u because all other magazines are stupid ndoubtedly the biggest trend on the vag scene right now is air-ride suspension it s spreading like a rash and is appearing on some amazing cars the question is would these have been great cars even without air-ride or is it the lowered stance the adjustable system allows that makes them great something else to think about is that we embrace lowrider culture with its air-ride systems we also take inspiration from the hotrod and aircooled vw communities with shaved bays and shaved trim etc but as soon as somebody fits jdm wheels they get lynched on the forums what s that about i ve always thought we should borrow the ideas that grab our attention from any scene out there for many of us we re old enough to remember the birth pangs of the watercooled vw scene the only place we fitted in was at aircooled events where you d find a few golfs skulking in the corner of course it wasn t many years before the gti scene grew sufficiently to justify its own events and the european tuning scene we know today largely grew from that think about it ­ waterfest is only 15 years old with the birth of the watercooled scene alongside bugs and vans it s inevitable we d borrow influences from them in fact in the early days of pvw we d occasionally feature aircooled cars because the quality remains incredibly high and it reflected our roots indeed many of us trace our euro obsession back to their dad s bug or their first beetle it s the same with hotrods many guys grow up around family who built musclecars which become their first introduction to speed before they realized cornering is equally important so we understand why smooth engine bays shaved door handles and air-ride have caught on the next conumdrum is why you d want air-ride the euro scene is undoubtedly obsessed with stance more than any other automotive group in the us but are we in danger of losing our way i ve always known a gti was neither the cheapest nor the fastest car on the road but its combination of performance handling reliability and character won me over maybe i m wrong but does air-ride defeat that objective no matter how built your show car is you should still be able to point it at some twisties and emerge the other side with your pulse racing as fast as your car yet my limited experience of aftermarket air-ride is that it makes the car rather unweildy hopefully i m wrong and the new systems are better than the ones i tried a few years ago i d hate to see us enter a phase where european tuning no longer means making a car perform better but that it just looks good when parked it s only my opinion and i love the stance air-ride gives which is why we continue to feature cars with it in fact we may even show you how to install it but let s leave it on the pure show cars share you opinions at the email below greg emmerson editor eurotuner@sorc.com www.st storemags.com www.fantamag.com
