message from president george e andrews jr dear alumni and friends of mount saint joseph high school in this issue of the mount magazine i want to take a few moments to focus on graduation at mount saint joseph graduation is one of the ceremonies that sets us apart from other schools a day highlighting so many positive things about our students and our school the mount s graduation takes place the first sunday in june at the cathedral of mary our queen our mount men dress in white tuxedo jackets and sport a simple purple boutonnière there is great dignity and decorum throughout the graduation ceremony it is elegant and refined from beginning to end in this age where high school graduations often occur outside in stadiums or outdoor concert halls with beach balls flying around the audience messages taped to the top of mortar boards and people screaming out the mount s graduation remains uniquely dignified held in a reverent setting reflective of the faith our school works so hard to develop in these young men we are blessed each year to have representatives of the 50-year reunion class the golden gaels celebrate graduation with us this year members of the class of 1963 came back to be recognized during the graduation ceremony the significance of their attendance always gives us pause reminding us that this year s 247 graduates joined a fraternity a brotherhood of some 15,000 mount graduates who are still with us the physical presence of the golden gaels at graduation imprints on our young graduates that they are part of something much larger our xaverian charism which goes back over 130 years beginning with our founder theodore james ryken i feel confident that the mount will continue to thrive and that the class of 2013 will one day be golden gaels themselves equally important to our community as our alumni are our parents this year i took the opportunity to survey our senior parents about the myriad of senior activities in the month leading up to graduation currently we have an in-school award ceremony mother-son and father-son masses and dinners a prom a recognition dinner the baccalaureate and a few other activities that i m forgetting in the course of these surveys we garnered a number of new ideas in the hopes of improving what we do at the mount it was most interesting in the written comment section of the survey to read comments such as graduation was a special time and each event was a special memory that we as a family will cherish to us these events are a tradition that we looked forward to and we would ask you to not change a thing it was heartwarming to see how many people thought both baccalaureate and graduation went so well it is important for our graduates to understand that while times change the legacy and some aspects of our institution do not change our mission remains strong based on our fundamental principles our graduation activities remain as tasteful and pertinent as they were 50 years ago for me presiding over my first graduation as president graduation day was heartwarming i watched the smiles on the faces of the young men as they became mount men to hear jack cook speak to his classmates and to call upon mr dave norton our principal and mount man from the class of 1971 to lead the class of 2013 in the singing of the alma mater for the first time as graduates brought a beautiful closure to a challenging yet exciting year thank you all who represent mount saint joseph high school so very well whether it has been 5 25 or 50 plus years ago that you graduated you should be proud of the shared legacy of the mount and of what mount men do to make the world a better place the mount is published quarterly by the mount saint joseph development office george e andrews jr president david l norton 71 principal emily wilson rollins executive director of development james poisal 03 assistant director of development constituent relations jessica ader assistant director of development public relations editor the mount luke menefee 07 assistant director of development alumni relations cathy steffe executive assistant for development brandy darcey administrative assistant for development sincerely george e andrews jr president 2 the mount
