message from steve r benton sr superintendent of jackson county school district as we begin the coming school year in jackson county i would like to first begin by thanking the people of this county for your support of our public school system i hope you feel as i do that we have the finest employees and teachers in the state of florida our schools are committed to providing the best education possible for the children in our district the district motto is building a better community one student at a time we exist to provide for the needs of each student and working hand in hand with parents and the community we can meet this goal our academic record shows our success in meeting the educational needs but we are also concerned with the whole child programs such as our weekend backpack feeding program demonstrate our commitment to this these are challenging times as we deal with continued mandates from legislation combined with decreasing fund sources but i promise you that we will continue to do the best with what we are given and we will meet the challenges that are sent to us from tallahassee the support of our parents and the community certainly make doing this easier you are a big factor in the success that we have had and we look forward to working hand in hand with you to continue that success as we implement changes for the coming school year such as the new dress code policy and county-wide discipline plan we are here to answer any questions you may have concerning these or any other issue you have questions about my staff is always available for you and we are here to serve you our district web site www jcsb.org also contains useful information i look forward to a great school year and look forward to seeing you as i am out in the schools and the community.

jackson county sheriff s office back to school safety tips summer is over and it s back to school time in an effort to keep this new school year fun and safe everyone must work together the jackson county sheriff s office is dedicated to making sure our schools are safe make sure you do your part to help in this effort traffic safety tips school emergency hotline 850-482-1217 call to report · guns · drugs · weapons · criminal activities involving schools all calls will remain anonymous whether a parent student driver walker or bus rider it is important to remember and follow the rules of the road to ensure the safety of everyone · · · · · · obey posted school zone speed limits do not drop off students in the roadway use the designated drop off areas buckle up ensure all occupants are always buckled up or in proper car/booster seats be a safe pedistrian use only designated crosswalks watch for officers directing traffic in school zones obey traffic control signs and devices do not stop in roadway or make u-turns where prohibited remember for an immediate emergency dial 9-1-1 drugs and gangs in school both of these are serious issues facing our schools in today s society gang and drug activity will not be tolerated in jackson county if a student observes or suspects gang and or drug activity at their school it should be reported to the school resource officer or principal if a parent suspects their child may be involved in gang or drug activity look for the following warning signs gang involvement · · · · · sudden change in friends and or grades isolation from family changes in attitude personality sudden change in clothing example wearing specific colors unexplained physical injuries bullying · bullying means systematically and chronically inflicting physical hurt or psychological distress on one or more students or employees bullying is a repeated behavior bullying is a serious offense report suspected or known bullying to school administration drug use · · · · · sudden change in friends and or grades isolation from family changes in attitude personality sudden weight loss or other physical changes change in sleep habits · · · jackson county sheriff s office louis s roberts iii sheriff 40 12 lafayette street marianna fl 32447 phone 850-482-9624 fax 850-482-9017

instruction for riding school buses bus safety rules for students be on time 1 plan to leave home each day so that you will be at your bus stop five 5 minutes before the bus 2 remember that the driver will not wait for stragglers 3 if you have to walk where there are no sidewalks face the traffic and walk on the shoulder of the road use the left-hand side of the road so drivers can see you and you can see them 4 walk in a single file at the bus stops 1 stand away from the highway at the stop 2 wait until the bus comes to a full stop and the door is opened before moving toward the bus 3 use the handrail when boarding the bus 4 pupils must board and leave the bus at their regular stop location unless by written permission of parent and signed by principal or designee bus manners 1 normal classroom behavior is expected while riding the bus no horseplay 2 go directly to your seat and sit quietly 3 eating and drinking are not permitted on the bus 4 hold books and other belongings firmly 5 keep the aisle clear at all times 6 large or heavy article should be transported to school by your parents 7 there must be complete silence at all railroad crossings 8 nothing should go out of the window 9 report any damage in the bus to the driver as you leave the bus 10 the driver is in full charge of the bus and pupils pupils must obey the driver 11 the driver has the right to assign seats pupils must sit three to a seat if bus is equipped with seatbelts pupils must wear them 12 no animals dead or alive glass or glass containers sharp object ball bats batons or drumsticks will be allowed on the bus 13 riding the bus is a privilege serious and repeated misconduct with use of profanity fighting throwing objects will result in limited suspension when you get there 1 remain seated until the bus comes to a complete stop 2 follow the directions given by the driver for unloading 3 use the handrail when leaving the bus 4 be careful watch your step 5 move away from the bus as quickly as possible crossing the road safely crossing the road is the most dangerous part of a bus trip follow these steps 1 walk twelve 12 steps ahead of the bus at the edge of the road 2 before starting to cross stop look at the driver and wait until told to cross 3 walk quickly across checking both directions to be sure the roadway is clear 4 walk directly to the other side of the road do not stop to retrieve dropped items special trips 1 follow all school bus safety rules 2 stay with you assigned group and chaperone at all time emergencies 1 remain seated until driver gives instructions 2 follow emergency evacuation procedures above list is subject to district school board policies think pool efficiency reduce the operating time of your pool filter and automatic cleaning sweep to four to five hours each day this adjustment can mean significant energy savings conserving today means saving tomorrow visit www.westflorida.coop for more energy-saving tips.
