tauranga intermediate school 12.11.10 school roll 1240 newsletter 2010/15 dear parents i hope you are all enjoying the wonderful spell of weather we are experiencing at the moment we were certainly fortunate to get three days of beautiful weather for our athletic sports and i was delighted with the participation and results best wishes to the team that will be selected to represent us at the upcoming bay of plenty athletic championships to be held on friday 26 november 2010 at the tauranga domain administration building on monday 15 november 2010 we moved out of the current administration building up to the new gym to enable the commencement of the refurbishment of the administration building consequently all office staff will be in the new gym with myself and senior administrator mike bibby deputy principal kathy colville will be located in the special education office deputy principal gareth scholes is in the computer office with mr ransley and deputy principal mr shane cunliffe can be found off the library it is anticipated that construction will be completed by the end of term one 2011 national standards in reading/writing and mathematics to assist you to support your child!s learning we are distributing online at www.minedu.govt.nz parents and in paper copy to every student of our school plus all incoming year seven students copies of where your child should be at the end of year seven and at the end of year eight we will also distribute these in pasifika languages and maori please note the english versions will come out next week and the maori/pasifika next year i hope you will find them valuable resources rock climbing wall it has now been completed with the exception of the signwriting which will be done this week the wall will be officially opened at 2.00 pm on friday 26 november 2010 if you contribute to the wall by buying a hand or foot hold you are cordially invited to the opening regards brian diver we are exploring personal potential -1-

tauranga intermediate school newsletter vol 2010/15 12.11.10 academic by the end of this week students will have completed all of their end of year testing and teachers will then be in the process of analyzing their class data and writing children!s end of year reports preliminary indications would appear to show that our results look very pleasing and this is down to the hard work of both students and teachers a detailed analysis of the results will be done by mr scholes and myself over the next two weeks when we compare term 1 and term 4 data against the goals set at the beginning of the year we will then look at the improvements made and set targets for 2011 please ask your children how they did in their literacy and numeracy assessment this year and ask them to explain the movement in their scores and what this means for their next steps in learning the following information explains the end of year testing that has taken place at tauranga intermediate school explanation of assessments pat progressive achievement test in mathematics star reading test this ranks each student against all others of the same age across new zealand stanine 1-3 below average stanine 4-6 average stanine 7-9 above average supplementary test of achievement in reading tests student knowledge and skills in six key areas from this test students are given a stanine asttle writing assessment tools for teaching and learning the levels indicated are based on the nz curriculum levels and indicate the stage within the curriculum level that your child is working at 3b level 3 beginning 3p level 3 proficient 3a level 3 advanced ikan individual knowledge assessment for numeracy gloss global strategy stage it is a timed assessment where students are required to recall their knowledge quickly the gloss is an oral assessment carried out with individual students it identifies the strategy stages across addition and subtraction add/sub multiplication and division mult/div and proportions and ratios prop/ratios we are exploring personal potential -3-

tauranga intermediate school newsletter vol 2010/15 12.11.10 music news we have experienced some pretty exciting arts events during the past two weeks firstly we had the 12 hour relay talent show an enormous thank you to all the students who entertained us with a talent show during the 12 hour relay you were awesome next a group of 50 students and four staff travelled to auckland to see and hear the auckland philharmonic orchestra play at the aotea asb theatre the concert was all about the connection between music and sport great to link the music athletes with the sports athletes thank you parents for supporting the trip to end this week we were very lucky to have kawerau intermediate take over our friday assembly and entertain us they can pride themselves with being the 2010 aims hip hop dance champions and being the school of past pupil danielle hayes winner of new zealand s next top model future treats friday 26 november at 1.30 pm tauranga intermediate school hall free entry cambridge middle school year 8 academy class consisting of two rock bands and 10 dancers friday 3 december at 11.00 am tauranga intermediate entry fee is only $2.00 per student drum concert dylan elise the fantastic incredible indescribable drummer will be presenting a drum concert parents caregivers are welcome to attend both of these treats we are exploring personal potential -7-

tauranga intermediate school newsletter vol 2010/15 12.11.10 our memorable trip to yang ming junior high school -taiwan we were two fortunate students who had the opportunity to travel to taiwan and attend yang ming junior high school our sister school for ten days what an amazing experience this trip taught us a lot about ourselves and we have reflected on some of the things we learnt that have improved us we now have better people skills and communication skills because we had to communicate make friends share our knowledge with and thank people that didn#t speak the same language using some english mandarin smiles body language and gestures helped us to make ourselves understood you have to be positive and brave and we made lots of friends so we think we learnt to do this we are resilient because when the typhoon hit we were definitely scared but didn#t make a fuss and relied on ourselves to be brave hopefully this is a once in a lifetime experience during our time away we developed confidence through successfully making friends communicating with people speaking a different language being away from home and learnt to be self reliant performing in front of a large audience and representing our school and the kiwi way of life gave us an insight into being nz ambassadors the school gave us many opportunities to visit a range of tourist activities and we particularly enjoyed the love river night markets and jensusan theme park it was a fantastic experience and we still keep in contact with many new and existing friends via e-mail hopefully they will remain life long friends payton silvester/aine blackman we are exploring personal potential -10-

tauranga intermediate school newsletter vol 2010/15 12.11.10 tvnz6netguide schools multimedia challenge during term 3 students from tauranga intermediate were very busy creating a digital presentation presenting a topic that they have learnt about to enter into the tvnz6netguide schools multimedia challenge over 1000 entries for each category were received at tvnz6 making the judging very difficult a few weeks ago teachers were notified of students who were in the final selection requesting they attend the prize giving function at the tvnz studio in auckland on 12 november the results are below 1st placing for intermediate team room 17 tyla gartner madison gartner dan song 2nd placing for intermediate team room 17 jaryd gordon todd yaxley jaymie grigg 1st placing for intermediate individual room 29 taylor stock $43,000.00 worth of prizes were awarded out to the recipients students who were placed 1st received toshiba notebooks each novels and vouchers students who were placed 2nd received software vouchers and novels also the students were able to meet in person jeremy and julia hosts of the tvnz6 channel they also got to see one or two $shortland street stars in the foyer while we were waiting to enter the reception area we are exploring personal potential -15-
