editor s letter high we all dreamed of 40mpg but as gas prices drop and diesel fuel remains expensive how many people are going to look to the future and buy a diesel the oil companies know we ll buy fuel at $4 a gallon so it s only a matter of time before it reaches that level again and with the fuel reserves dropping and the remaining pockets becoming harder to reach oil production will get more expensive and prices will rise don t imagine it won t right now european car enthusiasts are spoiled for choice from fuel-efficient turbo engines to high-performance diesels we can enjoy cars from smart mini vw bmw audi mercedes and volvo etc while saving fuel and looking after the environment and there are always motorcycles from bmw ducati aprilia mv agusta ktm vespa piaggio etc that offer the same european values as those above in the face of a crisis we actually have it pretty good in a similar vein check out our blog pages at www.eurotuner.com if you re a current or prospective diesel owner there s been some confusing labeling of the new ultra-low sulfur diesel pumps at gas stations so we ve helped to demystify the confusion as it turns out the old stuff won t harm your engine if you use it once just don t make a habit of it and get to know where the ultra-low sulfur diesel is readily available christmas and the new year are around the corner for us months past for you but r everybody at eurotuner would like to wish you and your family all the best thanks for continuing to read us and here s hoping we all have a better 2009 could anybody lend me some money s i sit down to write this its mid-december los angeles is experiencing an unusual week of rain and detroit s big three are in the process of requesting a government bail-out ordinarily we don t get involved with the domestics but this is big news it s about more than escalades and explorers by the time you read this the situation will probably have been resolved and i hope they got the money it s not that i want to see more escalades and explorers on the roads far from it but this topic has greater ramifications for a start nobody wants to see thousands of workers lose their jobs from a basic humanitarian standpoint and with our economy in tatters we need taxpayers not welfare recipients if the big three were to close it would have a devastating impact on the economy on so many levels consider the supply chain for example many of the suppliers also provide parts to bmw and vw plants in the us and mexico and their demise would impact the cars we drive as well on a global scale the big three make and sell cars all over the world ford has a huge business in europe making some of the best selling most dynamic vehicles in the market similarly gm has its european vauxhall and opel divisions making first-rate vehicles the loss of these cars and the jobs of the people who make them would also be a tragedy many people point to europe and ask why ford and gm don t sell these cars in the us well gm does you can buy an opel from a saturn dealer that s almost unchanged in a specification but how many people actually buy them i asked a good friend who works in ford s public relations why they didn t bring the superior european product to the american market he explained they had done on numerous occasions but these cars were generally unpopular and unprofitable most customers just wanted f-150s and explorers or at least they did until gas hit $4 a gallon then they were knocking on the door asking why ford didn t have any smaller more economical cars for sale we ve shown what you can expect to see in ford showrooms over the next few years in our news section at www.eurotuner.com the line-up will include both the fiesta and new focus which are class-leading vehicles the delay is in tooling-up us plants to produce these cars cheaply enough to make them economically viable they should start arriving in 2010 but we hope they don t americanize them too much previous models had been given softer suspension slower steering lack-luster engines etc to meet both a price-point and the perceived values of us customers leave them alone the europeans know what they re doing another curious trend happening as i write is that fuel has plummeted from $4 a gallon to around $2 suddenly all those suv owners who wanted to off-load their cars are smiling again but don t be fooled don t think prices won t sky-rocket again once demand returns to normal levels right now people at vw and bmw must be questioning their decision to finally bring diesel cars to the us when fuel prices were greg emmerson editor eurotuner@sorc.com www.fantamag.com a
