newsletter 11 november 2010 from the principal tn koutou katoa thank you all for bearing with us over the last week while our phone system was out of order thankfully we are restored to normal this week and you will once again hear hannah s fantastic welcome message pet day what a fabulous day we had last wednesday with all creatures great and small taking part in our annual pet day it was obvious just how many hours had gone into preparing pets and owners for display as always we are grateful to the members of our local community who acted as judges on the day to the pta for providing morning tea for the judges and to parents for transporting and supporting we have been hearing a persistent `rumour that this was our last pet day i can assure you that this simply is not true by the end of last week staff and students had reviewed the morning and made a list of suggestions for improvement for next year including a parade and dress up event for the dogs national standards at the end of this year teachers will be reporting to parents against the newly introduced national standards our end of year report format has been redesigned to accommodate this requirement you will be aware that national standards have been hotly debated in the media throughout the year prior to reports going home on december 10th we will be running a seminar for parents to `unpack the standards explain how teachers are required to make judgements about a child and also to outline what some of the fuss has been about this seminar will be offered twice on wednesday december 1st at 2 p.m and again at 7 p.m please dairy this date while i can not claim to have all the answers at this stage please let me know if you have any particular questions relating to the standards new appointment a permanent appointment has been made to fill the vacancy created by lorraine scarlet s retirement i am delighted to announce that simon dakers will be joining our staff from the beginning of 2011 and will be teaching in the senior learning team simon is currently completing his batchelor of teaching and learning at the university of canterbury and has considerable skills in music simon is also very interested in the environment and he and his wife are keen to raise their young family in the country there will be an opportunity for you to meet simon before the end of this school year on the buses take a close look at the new e-can buses running through springston because the production of the brand new buses for this route was interrupted by the september earthquake older buses are being used in the interim e-can invited our school to decorate one of the buses which fitted nicely with our art theme for the term we had to use childrens handprints as part of the deisgn and thanks to julia and rachelle a very effective depiction of the alps rivers and plains will decorate one of the buses travelling through springston each hour keep an eye out pool keys thanks to craig phillipson our swimming pool will be open for use from monday november 15 members of the school commuity can purchase a key for the season at a cost of $70 school swimming will also begin on monday ng mihi ki a koutou katoa liz weir principal principal s awards r2 will lunch with liz the following children had their names drawn out of the gotcha box at our last assembly harry w for being accepting and adaptable by collecting the wheelie bins.
