joy bryer the flowers appear on the earth the time of the singing of birds is come and the voice of europe is heard throughout the world paraphrasing the bible s song of songs this voice of europe is reflected in the slow but sure improvement of the economic climate despite the undeniable fact that many europeans are still suffering from unemployment especially the young our voice sings out that at the orchestra s heart since its founding in 1976 is the provision of a programme which enables our young musicians to find jobs in the great orchestras of the union and beyond while creating new cultural projects and inspiring governments to support young people in the arts the euyo graduate holds the passport to an improved quality of life and is an ambassador for world peace social justice and human dignity youth unemployment is a battle we can all help win together by developing new job training models and supporting young people s mobility our voice says smile if you live in europe it is more than heart-warming to see how well european democracies have stood up since the crisis began this makes us realise that the remarkable dream of a united europe can and has come true i see our orchestra as a chariot of fire proclaiming with resounding song and music life will be better especially for the young as their `mother i am smiling and as a passionate european i do believe that the union deserved the nobel peace prize to our patrons the heads of state and prime ministers of the 28 european union countries our honorary and administrative committees we owe a debt of gratitude i am most grateful to commissioner androulla vassiliou for giving us the opportunity to demonstrate the co-operation of europe s youth and to our honorary president martin schulz whose support and encouragement are fundamental to our working life as president i should like to say how delighted i am with our brilliant new chief executive marshall marcus he is indefatigable and a great champion for the youth of europe and will take the orchestra well into the 21st century the future of europe belongs to its youth let us stand up for them in every way and smile president and co-founder 4

marshall marcus chief executive i recently attended the annual convocation of our partner the state of the european union the elite ranks of many of the world s most powerful companies that do business with and in europe joined together in brussels to debate the increasingly urgent questions that our president and co-founder joy bryer refers to regarding the future of europe throughout this encounter the ambition for europe s organisations to join in a more effective and harmonious partnership was present in almost every crevice of the agenda and every scrap of attendant dialogue and nowhere more so than in the crowning event of the summit the announcement of daniel cohn-bendit and guy verfohstadt as winners of the 2013 european leader award for their recent book `for europe manifesto for a postnational revolution in europe as ever the work of the musicians of the european union youth orchestra provides a perfect and tangible metaphor in sound for these laudable aspirations 120 young european performers from 28 countries united in a common endeavour at the highest level of excellence with room for both hard won tradition and critically needed innovation and true respect for each other any european in want of inspiration in today s crisis need look no further the programmes for this summer s concerts reflect many elements of this endeavour no prior experience can prepare one for the revolutionary effect of berlioz s `fantastic symphony on first hearing or the startling originality of the weaving themes of stravinsky s petrushka and as we listen to the blistering majesty of mussorgsky s great gate of kiev as it opens or the pungent and hypnotic repetitions of ravel s boléro dance figures we discover or renew ourselves with the fact that europe in orchestrated sound is an experience of incomparable exhilaration and imagination as for innovation it could justifiably be said that a new chapter of the euyo s history opens on this summer tour a new orchestral seminar in partnership with the grafenegg festival new format pop-up concerts a new partnership with the valletta 2018 project and a special concert for the city of skopje marking the 50th anniversary of the terrible earthquake of 1963 as part of the `skopje remembers campaign all reflect old music of the highest quality placed into new and radical contexts the driving spirit of imagination in the music that is to be performed the excellence innovation and ambition in our talented young musicians and the communal aspiration for a reinvigorated europe these are the qualities that we invite you to experience in our summer 2013 performances and in that spirit welcome 5 © morley von sternberg

herman van rompuy president of the european council androulla vassiliou commissioner for education culture multilingualism and youth © eeuropean communities after the turmoil of recent years europe continues to work towards recovery and lasting improvements for all its citizens and one of the most decisive factors on this path will be our collective creative abilities together with europe s extraordinary capacity for innovation this will help us build a brighter future for all and who could better symbolise creativeness and innovation than an orchestra full of young people working together with joy and dedication to achieve a common goal indeed we must work particularly for young people these young musicians of the euyo symbolise the values and ideals that lie at the heart of the european project solidarity cross-cultural collaboration the free movement of ideas and people thus as the european union youth orchestra tours it bears aloft the idea and the ideal of europe and brings some of the most iconic works of classical music to a wide variety of european countries i wish these young ambassadors every success in their concerts and in their many encounters that will shape their views on europe and hopefully their audiences views as well i can imagine no better way to convey the message that by remaining united irrespective of our differences we are so much stronger i m delighted to provide my full support to the european union youth orchestra s summer tour once again the orchestra is giving young talent a unique opportunity to perform with experienced artists in some of europe s major concert halls theatres and festivals such an exciting experience helps to stimulate creativity and to produce excellence among a new generation of young performers and can serve as a springboard for their future careers but the orchestra s activities can also contribute to the creation of a more culture-based and harmonious society spreading the values upheld by the artists awareness passion respect social inclusion innovation creativity and sharing together i am delighted that the european union youth orchestra will this year for the very first time have the opportunity to perform in malta at the pjazza teatru rjal the new open-air venue in valletta this comes in the wake of the city s nomination as european capital of culture for 2018 it is a promising start for launching the activities leading up to la valletta 2018 i m very proud that the european commission supports the european union youth orchestra and i sincerely wish it every success with its summer tour 2013 7

grafenegg is always a high point in the euyo s calendar with its unique location stunning performing spaces and very special hospitality but this year s residency of the euyo at grafenegg goes further with a real deepening of the relationship between the orchestra and the festival as part of this deepening we have devised a new project together `the seminar that will see the orchestra spend three additional days at grafenegg this summer exploring the question of what makes a world class orchestra in today s society as part of this seminar project we will be working at how orchestras can improve their listening in an age when many us spend our days under an increasing assault of noise in public spaces and also at how orchestras can develop the strength and effectiveness of their communication with new audiences that can be unfamiliar with the traditional concert format furthermore we will be exploring the new roles that are available and perhaps necessary for orchestras in the 21st century at the euyo we are particularly aware of our role in training the next generation of musical leaders in europe and we are therefore immensely grateful to the grafenegg festival for their help in making a project like the seminar possible together we are making an important journey the journey to a tomorrow in which classical music and orchestras have a vital role to play in the lives of not only some but hopefully all of europe s citizens we salute the grafenegg festival for joining us and helping to make that journey possible the euyo team © stefan badegruber 9 © alexander haiden

euyo in bolzano a message from dr luigi spagnolli mayor and patrizia trincanato cultural councillor questo è l anno in cui ci si appresta a ragionare sugli effetti delle profonde trasformazioni sociali in atto nella nostra vecchia europa la profonda crisi economica in corso partita ormai da qualche anno ci ha fatto intravedere che dovremo abituarci a un futuro in cui nulla sarà più come prima ciò non significa necessariamente che il domani sarà peggiore semplicemente diverso la premessa a questo cambiamento sociale è che il nostro mutato atteggiamento esistenziale parta da nuovi paradigmi culturali che mettano al centro del nostro mondo non più solo il benessere economico ma la ricerca di un nuovo equilibrio interiore e in questo nuovo percorso con la consapevolezza di questa mutata weltanschaung la città di bolzano insieme alle sue istituzioni culturali e al collaudato consenso della propria cittadinanza vuole tenere saldamente annodato il nostro nuovo futuro al passato il gradito ritorno della euyo l orchestra di cui ormai bolzano rivendica a pieno titolo e con orgoglio il ruolo di genitore adottivo fin dalla sua fondazione riaccende attraverso i suoi giovani musicisti un nuovo faro di speranza verso un mondo in rapido e radicale cambiamento che non potrà mai fare a meno della musica dell arte e della cultura dieses jahr bietet uns die gelegenheit über die auswirkungen der tiefgreifenden sozialen veränderungen nachzudenken die das alte europa zur zeit durchlebt die schwere wirtschaftliche krise die seit einigen jahren anhält lehrt uns unter anderem dass wir uns daran gewöhnen müssen dass in zukunft nichts mehr so sein wird wie vorher das bedeutet aber nicht unbedingt dass die zukunft schlechter sein wird als die gegenwart wohl aber dass sich in zukunft einiges ändern wird die voraussetzung für diese große soziale veränderung ist dass sich unsere veränderte existentielle haltung auf neuen kulturellen paradigmen gründet die nicht mehr nur das wirtschaftliche wohlergehen in den mittelpunkt unseres lebens stellen sondern die suche nach einem neuen inneren gleichgewicht angesichts dieser neuen weltanschauung setzt die stadt bozen mit ihren kultureinrichtungen und des großen zuspruches ihrer bevölkerung gewiss auch heuer wieder auf tradition das euyo gastiert wie jedes jahr in der landeshauptstadt und bozen ist stolz darauf die jungen musiker und musikerinnen des euyo auch heuer wieder willkommen zu heißen denn diese jungen menschen sind auch hoffnungsträger in einer welt die sich sehr schnell und auf radikale weise verändert aber eine welt von morgen ohne musik kunst oder kultur wird es nicht geben this year gives us the opportunity to reflect upon the effects of the profound social changes that old europe is currently undergoing the severe economic crisis that has already lasted for several years teaches us among other things that we must get used to the fact that in the future nothing will be as it was this does not necessarily mean that the future will be worse than the present yet it does mean that much will change in the future the prerequisite for this great social change is that our altered existential attitude is based on new cultural paradigms no longer focusing on economic prosperity but on the search for a new inner equilibrium faced with this new ideology the city of bolzano and its cultural institutions confident of the enthusiastic backing of its population has once again decided to uphold tradition as every year the european union youth orchestra is our guest in the regional capital city and bozen is proud to welcome the young musicians of the euyo once again for these young people are the standard-bearers of hope in a world changing rapidly and radically however there will be no world of tomorrow without music art or culture 10 © maddalena spitaler
