2 the good newsletter · winter 2011 the joseph t higham parish community playground the playground which replaced one destroyed by an arson fire was dedicated on thursday september 9 hundreds of children and parishioners witnessed the dedication along with a number of local and state dignitaries and captains of industry named in honor of former trustee joseph t higham this state-of-the-art playground is handicapped accessible the ground surface is made of recycled rubber that provides shock absorbency during play reduces maintenance costs and is better for the environment subsequently we installed security lights to help deter similar vandalism while our insurance was able to cover much of the rebuilding cost after the deductible and depreciation rising prices and the cost of a campus security system to help preclude future vandalism the parish was left with some additional expense parishioners are invited to help defray the additional costs of this wonderful place for our children to play your tax-exempt donation is greatly appreciated send your donation to the rectory or place it in any collection basket additionally if you are interested in having one or more of the modular sections of the playground named in your honor or in memory of a loved one a list of those opportunities is available from bud dotsey director of development at 587-1131 ext 251 or firstname.lastname@example.org at the september 11 meeting chairman tom destefano welcomed continuing council members brian stewart betsy solan betty poland dan rossi joseph celauro maureen cozzi bob porzio monica quaste and anita usmiani he gave a special welcome to new members ed anderson pat colamarino denise reil and john zefutie fr trammel opened the meeting by giving an update on recent parish events and activities during the summer parish staff provided lots of tender loving care for parish facilities in order to assure their beauty and safety several work projects to the physical plant were completed sinking parking lot sewer drains were rebuilt sidewalks were repaired the stove hood system for the school kitchen was replaced exterior doors around the campus were repainted white maintenance staff prepared the school building for opening day and parish truck was replaced with a new two and a half ton dodge truck the school year was off to a great start with new staff appointments jason briggs has assumed the role of school principal four new teachers have been brought on board two of whom are st greg s alumni a part-time enrichment mathematics teacher has also joined the staff and dorothy conway has started in her new position as the director of religious education there have already been follow-up on recommendations from the parish survey for one fr trammel announced the addition of a sunday evening mass at 6 p.m starting the first week of advent november 28 ministry board a parish ministry board meeting was held on october 20 after an opening prayer led by fr trammel john boucher director of evangelization of the trenton diocese spoke about the opportunity that the christmas carol festival offers for bringing catholics back to jesus st greg s christmas festival will be held on december 4 in ferrante hall spread the word bring a friend and join in the celebration remember when we sing we pray twice who couldn t use a little prayer to help them through the holiday a strategic plan update was presented by the five parishioner-led task forces communications stewardship arts environment youth and facility usage as an outcome of the strategic planning process a sixth task force evangelization was also identified the overall message of the evening was that we are all called to evangelize so please do your part to bring disciples to jesus christ it s easy to start with just invite a friend or relative to the upcoming parish s christmas carol festival on december 4 it is a great opportunity to bring someone you love to a christmas party that is all about the true meaning of christmas photo by kramldesign.com pastoral council news

4 the good newsletter · winter 2011 visitation home a gift from god the greatest power in this world is retarded children the deaf the dumb and the blind those who suffer loneliness they have time to live in god to experience the joy of god to experience the presence of god and their prayer is powerful before the lord mother angelica by denise reil when parents have a child with a severe developmental disability we innately worry about what lies ahead it was through being a mother to scott who has autism and the suffering we endured that our hearts were filled with compassion for others who share the same concerns what will happen when we die or become sick and cannot take care of him will he ever have friends and will he suffer the great loneliness that comes from having a disability after learning that there are many thousands of people just in new jersey who share the same worry we prayed desperately for god s help like mary at the visitation lk 1:26-38 after conceiving jesus in her womb is sent forth to serve her cousin elizabeth we are sent to serve others who need us it was not easy but through much prayer and the sacrifices of many good people visitation home inc was formed we have opened homes for people with disabilities who are in need of loving affordable places to live where their dignity is respected their gifts are celebrated and they live in acceptance in a family-like setting many of our residents have experienced the painful loss of their parents and other family members and it is so beautiful to see how they have become family here the first visitation home opened in november 2003 and houses 5 residents with disabilities and their staff the second opened in december 2005 and houses 4 residents and staff we are presently in the planning stages with the architect to build a third house that will become home to at least 6 residents and their live-in staff this is a miracle because these homes are operated by the generosity of our friends in the community and through fundraisers and grants we are deeply grateful for and need our benefactors we have a little chapel in the center of our home and we pray the rosary each evening and on wednesday evenings we pray rosary and holy mass the parish of st gregory the great and all of our benefactors are remembered daily in prayer we are often asked to pray for specific intentions and our residents never forget a special need or request there is great power in their prayers and everyone who comes to visit feels the presence of god and his angels here it is a gift from god our homes are not just group homes or institutions they are places of peace and belonging it is a community that is concerned for those who have no voice who suffer loneliness and for those who have time to live in god to experience the joy of god and who experience the presence of god to volunteer or make a donation please contact us at · www.visitationhome.org · email@example.com · 658-0995 or · visitation home po box 11242 · hamilton new jersey 08620 jenny and margaret make music together gldc news our pre-school theme super why to the rescue supports many educational objectives such as letter recognition rhyming predictions and storytelling it gives the teachers a fun opportunity to encourage our little ones to learn from stories we love to change the endings so everyone lives happily and comfortably ever after i had the privilege of attending a workshop at the office of family life on support of the family the basic principle is developed from a statement from pope john paul ii familiaris consortio no plan for organized pastoral work at any level must ever fail to take into consideration the pastoral area of the family i love this statement imagine if every organization and ministry regarded their membership responsibilities in consideration of the whole family what a beautiful view if we saw our family as domestic church as good disciples we are called to model god s love in our daily chores consider how different the world story would be if we loved each family member our parish family and beyond with god s love imagine if the thanksgiving story of gathering and sharing all that we have continued to this day as we look to november and all the wonderful opportunities to come together as family i ask that you mark your calendar for our november 21 gldc parish pasta dinner this is a great way to meet and visit with other pre-school families and enjoy some good food and good times as we all know the family that prays and eats together stays together please go to our gldc site stgregorythegreat.church/gldc.org to learn more about this and other events and activities.
