springston school a 16-20 leeston road springston 7616 p 03-329-5724 f 03-329-5731 5 hngongoi 2013 e w b from the principal kia ora koutou what a great night out we had on wednesday thank you for your support of the children and their creative endeavours what an amazing audience turn out and we are most grateful for the $800 of donations this more than covers the cost of the lights portable staging and art supplies and we will put the rest towards booking some amazing entertainment for the children at our end of year picnic day i d like to reiterate my thanks to the red cross for funding the venue hire and the rehearsal buses to our parent community for support with costumes and props to anton and kiri our kapahaka tutors and to our teachers and support staff for all the extra effort throughout the term to ensure that the show could go on special thanks to rachel and corrina for being the enthusiasm and drive behind this event te wiki o te reo maori this week has been maori language week an initiative designed to promote the use of te reo as an everyday language our teachers continue to spend three hours a week learning the maori language and this saturday will attend their second one-day wananga for the year we are all finding it challenging to be the learners i hope you will have noticed an increase in our use of te reo here at school i certainly hear it when i visit classes and get a strong sense that our teachers are working hard to ensure that every week is te reo maori week here at springston go millie a huge congratulations to millie on finishing 10th in the canterbury primary and intermediate cross country on wednesday and being selected for the primary sports canterbury cross country team for 2013 millie has made it into the hardest canterbury representative team that there is to get into millie will now compete in nelson in the inter-regional cross country championship against runners from nelson marlborough and wellington in september this is the last newsletter for the term and we are all looking forward to the upcoming break we know the new term will bring the start of our long-anticipated building project on page 2 of this newsletter you will find information about an upcoming parent seminar you will not want to miss so please diary the date now if you are at school please pop into the foyer and check out the colours board for the new classrooms ng mihi ki a koutou katoa liz weir principal pta end of term disco springston community hall friday july 12th junior learning team 6pm 7pm middle and senior learning teams 7.15pm 8.45 pm $2 entry all the usual treats for sale!

hockey and soccer tournament yesterday the senior and middle school went to burnham to play hockey and soccer we used skills such as team work communication and sportsmanship the senior a hockey team did very well to for those of you new to our school we celebrate `book week come first in the a section and every second year and focus on will be going to the canterbury books and reading for the whole winter tournament next week week simon rachel matt and wendy were really impressed with how we will also be having a scholastic book fair running for well all the teams participated the week which is open to throughout the whole day parents before and after school so you can browse and buy books hockey and soccer stock up for christmas tournament yesterday the senior a and b we are planning some exciting soccer teams went to burnham to events for the week competitions compete in the soccer and activities including a tournament celebration for hairy maclary s 30th birthday watch out for more the senior a team were a mix of information in the school year 7 and 8 students and they newsletter worked together really well but sadly lost most of our games found throughout the day our passing a woollen scarf was picked up at improved and we kept the lincoln events centre at the encouraging each other even conclusion of our production it is though we didn t win we met lots navy and rust coloured if you own of people and enjoyed the day ­ it it can be collected from the jackson p captain school office library whew `a kiwi night out and what a fantastic night it was just before all the costumes get `put away book week is coming in term 3 and we will be having our `dress-up as your favourite book character day playground survey thank you to everyone who has completed the playground survey we d love to hear from as many of our parents as possible so please be aware that the survey will close on monday 8 july the senior b team worked well together as a team we used the space by spreading out and our passing improved throughout the day we all really enjoyed the games and i was really impressed with my team ­ emily captain

canterbury cross country on wednesday 3 july i went to the canterbury cross country i was running against intermediate schools and other primary schools in my age group the week before i competed in the canterbury primary cross country and i ended up 6th after this race the primary schools then raced off against the intermediate schools racing to see who is in the top 20 if you are placed in the top 10 then are part of the canterbury cross country team i competed in the cross country it was a slow start especially when i fell over but i ended up 10th i am now a part of the canterbury cross country team and will be heading up north to compete in the inter-regional cross country in september millie t room 7 congratulations to hamish t room 7 who has been selected for the ellesmere under 48kg representative team and jack t room 7 who also made this team as well as being selected to be their captain well done full training given let helen entertainment books the pony club still has entertainment books for sale please contact kim adams to make your purchase or 027 2086972 lincoln high school coaching recently we have had students from the high school coaching a our junior and middle school children this was a huge success with all the children enjoying the variety of sports that was offered a huge thank you to these students and their teacher ali grant and karen urbahn for organising this for us pool keys we still have a number of keys not returned if you have not returned your key please return to pool key to the office as soon as possible school resources while you are searching around the house for any sports uniforms you may have forgotten to return please check for any school resources eg library books class readers journals etc that may be at home as well and return if found reading tutors if you have a good listening ear and love to hear a range of new stories then being a reading tutor is the job for you time and day arranged to suit you and
