our donors care passionate it s a word we use every day at calgary health trust it describes our donors volunteers and the staff who are on the front lines of health care it s a word that embodies emotion inspires action and often drives us to work together and realize dreams we didn t know were possible our donors are the best when we call they answer and because of them we have achieved many significant milestones in the past year for example we officially opened the interventional trauma operating room itor at foothills medical centre and the first clinically based simulation training centre at peter lougheed centre we have made some significant strides toward our goals for cardiac care vascular surgery and esimtm and we have laid the ground work for more exciting projects in the future we would like to recognize and thank our volunteers those who serve on our board of directors and site development councils chair our event committees and spend countless hours helping us to do our best for all albertans their generous contributions of expertise energy and guidance make it possible for calgary health trust to maintain the highest standards health care impacts us all it brings us together as a community and it is one of the most important ways we can build a better future for everyone calgary is very fortunate to have dedicated teams of medical researchers physicians surgeons and health care professionals who are committed to providing the best and most compassionate care to patients we are very grateful to have the opportunity to work so closely with these individuals and to have such a wonderful team to work with at calgary health trust it is our privilege to dedicate this year s annual report to our donors with their help we were able to invest almost $20 million in many different programs last year their generosity is inspirational impacting the lives of many albertans and that is why working together is so important to us thank you for sharing calgary health trust s passion we hope you enjoy the inspiring stories shared by our donors in the following pages and that you see the difference that is being made by people in our community people like you sincerely m ann mccaig board chair jill olynyk chief executive officer

nine and half years ag o at 5 a.m my water bro ke at 32 weeks it was our first maternity class the morning before so we knew nothing i we nt back to bed because go sit in the hospital ­ i pla i did not want to nned on waiting for my do ctor s office to open my decided to call the rocky husband brian view general hospital an d a nurse calmly suggeste bring me in and head str d that he should aight up to labour and de livery owen our first son come early during labou decided he would r there were a lot of peop le in the room ­ besides family doctor and brian the our delivery nurse re were three or four peop le from the neonatal inten nicu then called the sp sive care unit ecial care nursery just wa iting for him after check owen straight to the nic ing him they took u as our first baby you can imagine how scared ended up being a really go we were but it od experience in the end the nurses and doctors and everyone was so go were fabulous od to us it is a wonderful time in you r life when you have a ba by and it s nice to have the knowing your baby is we comfort of ll taken care of when the y told us he could go home of being monitored 24/7 after two weeks we were terrified thankfu lly i was able to spend the owen off all the monitors night there with to give us the confidence we needed to take him ho me fast forward four years an d my water broke again in the middle of the night an twins at 33 weeks they d we had our were born at foothills bu t we were transferred to shortly after it s funny ho the rockyview w things turn out we we re transferred to the exact nicu ­ the elephant sec same spot in the tion in the exact same co rner ­ where we were wit familiar and comfortable h owen it was so and the staff were just as amazing as they were wh the first time en we were in there anja ended up being in the hospital for a week longe r than nathan the nurse twin bed as long as they s kept her in the could knowing that i wo uld be coming every day say twins do better when with nathan ­ they they are together and an ja got stronger with her bro ther beside her after all we ve been throu gh and the wonderful pe ople we ve met we have connection to rockyview a special and the nicu there we left there feeling so well tak having been so early wit en care of h our other two pregnancie s we were fully expecting youngest niclas early bu to have our t we were never concern ed ­ even when we had had been there and they the twins we had taken such good car e of our kids that we kne happened they were the w if anything best we want our children to know the importance of giving back they know ab spent in the nicu and we out the time they were able to tour it to sho w them the tiny babies an had been we want to tea d where they ch them that it s importan t to give back when you so much have been given we know what it s like to be there as a family and as a mother we have see those donations to the nic n how important u are this is a gift from our family to all the other grow there families who monique brian owen na than anja and niclas tuf fs

e visiting nds in california whil 11 with a trip to visit frie ht away i waited began in november 20 ly have to deal with rig our cancer journey that i knew i would like back in calgary normalities to be with my family i experienced some ab it did not i wanted fe patty has been would just go away a few days hoping it since that day my wi we headed back home home care and spital so lization doctors visits if i ended up in the ho osis surgery hospita through diagn constantly at my side chemotherapy s promptly othills hospital and wa lf to emergency at fo yview i was sented myse er a urologist at rock on november 10 i pre me to dr bryce web ining doctor referred bladder unfortunately examined the exam ratory surgery on my and underwent explo ct scan given an examination prostate cancer back as bladder and diagnosis came the ations shortly after my d a number of complic january 16 2012 i ha g to successfully rgery on k four hours operatin i was scheduled for su od four surgeons too rted to lose blo left leg i was fortunate initial surgery and i sta covered in my lower mber of clots were dis leg to keep it alive a nu stem the flow again od moving through my circulation to keep blo unable to walk s sufficient of my leg today i am enough that there wa sociated with the use with the pain as just fine but i would have to live short distances i am ce without pain but for a long distan life changes w to manage my new and i were shown ho visited to ensure patty clinic at the rockyview everyone worked hard enterostomal therapy stomy nurses from the we had everything including my new uro on me to ensure that me care checked up release ho regularly and after my under control py treatments my after my chemothera kers who would look g the course i met dr vic gust 27 2012 durin in early march 2012 april and ended on au met with at the beginning of tus of my cancer we first treatment began s to check on the sta an i am now clear of after i received ct sc 13 we were told that of my treatment and that day april 18 20 t ct scan on dr vickers after my las months see me again for six d he does not want to cancer an o looked after dedicated people wh were many wonderful do to help treatment there at we might be able to during the course of tty and i discussed wh cause of them pa ed on a two year perienced we decid me and truly cared be same thing that we ex owledge and through the help to bring more kn others who are going centre which would ate more e to train at the lowship helping to cre fellowship for someon excited about this fel e and impact were and are still very give back for a long tim talent to calgary we uld be a way for us to disease wo knowledge to fight the r in the future nce something simila who will experie those the way including nderful people along e have met a lot of wo tside of the journey w el both within and ou so that is our cancer s other care personn who specialists nurse not all of the patients physicians surgeons aring our journey sadly sh all way will help to tients who were also r donation in some sm hospital and other pa ay so we hope that ou with us tod shared our journey are others who will follow improve outcomes for terry and patty lawren ce
