springston school a 16-20 leeston road springston 7616 p 03-329-5724 f 03-329-5731 e office@springston.school.nz w www.springston.school.nz b springstonschoolnews.blogspot.com 21 june 2013 from the principal kia ora koutou it was great to see springston families at the modern learning expo at wigram the weekend before last we have have had to look very closely at the concept of a modern learning environment while working with ap design on the plans for our four new teaching spaces i hesitate to use the word `classrooms as it brings to mind an image of the rooms that i was taught in in the 1960 s and 70 s we would not expect a dr s or dentist s work space to have the same equipment as when we first started visiting as children in fact if the dentist was still using a pedal drill then we would probably run a mile however many classrooms still look the same as they did 40 years and more ago and some adults still like to see things in the classroom that look familiar to them desks in rows facing the front etc an opportunity to design and build a modern learning environment is an opportunity to create spaces fit for 21st century learners as much as it s about buildings and furnishings it s about creating spaces that promote learning that is personalised student-centred engaging and connected to real problems and the real world we are so lucky to have been given the opportunity to create these types of spaces in our school and we are committed to doing whatever we can to ensure that our existing `pre-fab spaces are also transformed over the next few years so that they too are fit for purpose building is due to start around the end of this term and in the meantime we have started on the big decisions like what colour carpet to lay and which formica for the new kitchen we recently visited a number of new schools when in auckland for the educational facilities planners conference so picked up great ideas a huge thank you to the board of trustees for allowing us the opportunity to attend the conference and for coming with us each class is busy at the moment practising for our whole school production on july 3rd i am sure you will really enjoy seeing them perform and our kiwiana theme is bound to trigger `in my day memories all children are involved in this show we have booked a venue that will hold us all so please do be part of this event see you there ng mihi ki a koutou katoa liz weir principal school production save the date are you all set for wednesday the 3rd of july we sure are come along to the lincoln events centre and be taken on a very special tour of new zealand we promise you you will never see a tour like this again `a kiwi big night out is guaranteed to have something for everyone from acting to singing to strutting down the catwalk and even some very questionable `mods it is a show not to be missed the tour guides arrive in new zealand at 6:30pm so please be seated by that time individual classroom teachers will alert their class as to what time the children need to be there what else do you need to bring a few gold coins to make a donation and buy a ticket for the pta raffle which will be drawn at the conclusion of the evening 1st load of blankets off to the new brighton check out the poster on the next page we look forward to project thank you for your generosity and seeing you there support.
