www.perins.net your out of catchment transition evening was very informative great explanations and all our questions were answered very well year 6 parents primary to secondary school transition at perins we make the transition process as straightforward as possible so that your child settles into this new phase of their education really easily as soon as you have confirmed your child s place we begin to get to know them so by the time september comes they are familiar with the new surroundings and what is expected of them using a mixture of group open days individual visits and an induction day there are plenty of opportunities for you and your child to find out about life at perins before the start of the autumn term as around one third of our students live out of catchment we take additional steps to help these children integrate by offering a further visit to perins as well as helping them make new friends through our friendship groups tutors are key figures in our relationship with you and your child so you have the chance to get to know your child s tutor during the year 6 summer term in addition our assistant head teacher and senior guidance manager are dedicated to year 7 they oversee the transition process and ensure that at every step of the way your child is made to feel welcome and secure a confident and happy student is more likely to achieve his or her full potential which is our aim as much as yours we understand that queries or concerns may surface at any time and we are only too happy to respond so every tutor s email address is made available to you we would prefer to allay any worries before they become a problem secondary school may seem less approachable than primary school but it is certainly the opposite at perins 5

i am aware that my child has been having a few difficulties around friendships ­ she returned home this evening in a much more positive frame of mind which i am sure was mainly due to the caring attitude and support she received from yourself and other staff at school today year 7 parent www.perins.net support guidance welfare and advice we recognise that sometimes for whatever reason life at school may become a challenge and at perins we really want to resolve problems as early as possible our support network begins with a team of specialist non-teaching staff ­ guidance managers ­ whose primary role is to ensure the welfare of your child our guidance managers each have a team of people who work closely with you and your child to address concerns and develop an individual programme which may involve one-to-one or group work or a mixture of both the support team also includes year 11 volunteer mentors for each tutor group who offer a helping hand where needed for example helping year 7s find the right classroom or simply checking that shirts are tucked in if your child is finding life at secondary school particularly difficult we will find them a `buddy ­ a year 11 student who will give them individual help for as long as is needed will contact you to find out if there is an underlying problem they can help with as we expect high standards of behaviour our guidance managers also oversee a clear and structured disciplinary policy special educational needs as an inclusive school our approach ensures everyone is given the best chance to succeed our teachers and guidance team have a broad range of expertise in special educational needs including add adhd dyslexia and offering emotional support we use a variety of strategies including small groups class and individual work to address the individual child s requirements careers advice there is a strong emphasis on careers with students looking at how they can make their way in the outside world from year 7 as they progress through the school our careers advisor can offer them individual support providing advice and practical help to enable your son or daughter to make the right decisions for their future whether it may be further education vocational training or finding a job attendance and behaviour our guidance managers monitor attendance and if your child is absent without your notification they 7

we no longer have to rely on our son s organisational skills to find out what is happening at school we use the website and the learning platform and we can see his work year 8 parent working with our relationship with you makes a valuable contribution to your child s education so communication is made as easy and uncomplicated as possible that s why we give you every teacher s email address so that you can contact them directly should the need arise 8

www.perins.net keeping in touch we use a number of methods to keep you up-to-date with both your child s progress and school news increasingly internet platforms are making it easier and quicker for us to keep you informed and we take full advantage of this technology we give every parent access to moodle our virtual learning environment so you can see your child s independent learning programme for yourself as well as the homework planner this useful resource contains more or less everything we think parents would like to know about perins and in the autumn term there is training on this for you if you wish in addition to moodle we have parental access to the sims learning gateway slg which allows you to see information about your child s progress attendance and achievements regular newsletters give you general school information and always include a specific parents information section our excellent texting service lets you know of school closures last-minute changes to school trips or that your child has arrived safely if they are on a residential visit if there is anything you would like to know concerning your child s progress we ask that you always contact your child s tutor in the first instance as they are usually able to resolve most queries i would just like to say thank you so much for such an interesting evening which your staff held last night for parents i found it very interesting but more so it was the obvious enthusiasm for science from all the staff that really came through i now understand why my son enjoys his science so much and hope he continues to do so year 6 parent progress reviews while your child is in years 7 and 8 you will be invited to meet with your child s tutor for a one-to-one review meeting three times a year to discuss progress and set future targets during years 9 10 and 11 you will have the opportunity to meet subject teachers at the annual parents evening in the summer term we also issue two written reports during the autumn and spring terms 9

laptops perins school is viewed as a leader in the ict education field and many local and national stakeholders look to this project as exemplary practice it has enabled twenty first century teaching learning and curriculum design offering students a wide range of exciting opportunities which encourage learning ict review ict is an important part of learning at perins which is why we encourage every student to use a laptop during their lessons everyone benefits from this scheme which the children find empowering and our excellent academic results demonstrate its effect 10

innovative learning we are very proud of our pioneering laptop leasing scheme which remains the envy of many a secondary school when your child starts year 7 you will be given the opportunity to lease one of our laptops for the five years your child is with us for a reasonable monthly fee we provide a laptop loaded with all necessary software and enabled for wireless internet access which can be used at school and taken home the fee also includes technical support maintenance and insurance since we launched the scheme in 2008 we have found the children have benefitted immensely as the laptop allows them to work at their own pace during lessons encouraging independence teachers develop their lesson plans around the use of ict and then out of school hours children can email them for clarification on set homework this system really simplifies the whole homework process as it can be uploaded to the moodle vle from home or projects begun in class can be completed easily at home ­ no more lost worksheets we have supplies of spare laptops in school available to children who are not participating in the scheme and financial difficulties will never prevent you from leasing one in years 10 and 11 if your child already has their own laptop they can bring it to school to use in lessons if they wish although they will not be able to access the school network families already leasing laptops are very supportive of the scheme especially if there is only one computer at home the additional laptop enables homework to be completed in a more relaxed atmosphere as other family members can use the home pc at the same time www.perins.net the innovative developments in ict across all curriculum areas have facilitated the opportunity for students to develop as independent and enquiring learners ofsted 2010 11

students enjoy their learning and have excellent learning skills they have good levels of concentration and are able to work independently and in groups they are confident in using ict to support their learning academic ofsted 2010 our flexible curriculum design allows students to learn at their own pace to the best of their ability when it comes to options we work closely with every child to help them make the right subject choices to suit their capability and future aspirations 12

www.perins.net i love studying science because you get to experiment with different chemicals it is one of the lessons i look forward to because of the practicals year 8 student an individual approach our curriculum is designed to allow a two year process for key stage 3 years 7 and 8 and three years for key stage 4 years 9 10 and 11 this method works well as it allows us to include a variety of additional qualifications whether they are vocational or post-gcse during years 7 and 8 your child will study a wide assortment of subjects required by the national curriculum we offer an additional subject called transformational learning which is designed to prepare your child for key stage 4 and encourages students to develop skills such as reflection critical thinking leadership and effective team working these are qualities that will be invaluable to your child long after he or she has left perins either as preparation for further study or to help them along their career path choice is the key to our key stage 4 curriculum we provide a wide variety of academic subjects that lead to a gcse as well as vocational qualifications and apprenticeship schemes as we work to a three year process for key stage 4 we are also able to offer as levels alternatively your child may wish to take their time to achieve higher gcse grades our excellent results show that this flexibility is very effective we work with you and your child on a personal level before they select their year 9 options and this enables them to make the best choice to help them achieve their ambition whichever route your child opts for we are confident they will leave perins with a broad range of outstanding skills and qualifications 13

students make an outstanding contribution to the school and the wider community ofsted 2010 activities out of school activities are an important part of providing a rounded education not surprisingly we offer a remarkable amount of lunchtime and after school clubs for almost every sport as well as a variety of other activities including art music and drama 14

www.perins.net the young ambassador scheme is an amazing opportunity year 10 student clubs and activities for all sports clubs and fixtures as a sports college perins offers an extensive assortment of sporting activities at lunchtime and after school our excellent pe department and facilities enable us to offer clubs for just about any sport you can think of every student is welcome to join a club no matter whether they are beginners or experts we arrange fixtures with other local schools as well as inter-house events throughout the year we also organise saturday fixtures and training sessions during the school holidays which are always well-attended every student is encouraged to participate and the winner of each category takes part in the final showcase gifted and talented programme we offer a specific programme aimed at supporting our talented sports students and we are extremely proud of their success in recent years we have been lucky enough to boast six international athletes among our students including 2 in rugby 1 in table tennis 1 in hockey 1 in basketball and 1 in cricket some of our students have even won scholarships to excellent sixth form colleges owing to their sporting prowess outside of sport our comprehensive gifted and talented programme provides opportunities for high achievers to complement their standard curriculum with additional activities this includes a summer school for new year 7 children before they come to perins as well as subject-specific projects our links with the universities of southampton and portsmouth provide a beneficial contribution to the programme we encourage everyone to participate in at least one club as we have found that these enrichment activities really help children to adopt a more positive approach to learning we have so many clubs to choose from there is bound to be something to suit your child creative arts activities perins might be a sports college but that doesn t mean we only concentrate on sports clubs on the contrary we have a thriving arts department and host drama productions and music concerts at various times during the year our wonderful christmas carol service and our award winning productions are definitely not to be missed in conjunction with hampshire music service we offer a range of extra-curricular music lessons and have a variety of orchestras choirs and bands we even have our own radio station with students broadcasting regular live shows from our fantastic studio our annual arts festival takes place each spring and incorporates a range of disciplines including dance drama music poetry and painting 15
