letter frin the editor when the flag goes down iven the time of year it is in these here parts i found myself randomly asking one day how did the checkered flag come into being after doing a little digging i found myself coming up with a one-word answer inconclusive although racing enthusiasts understand that when that chequered flag goes down it usually means the end of the race we might not consciously be aware of its origins and why it came into being there s one tale that suggests that the flag s humble beginnings are owed to a group of mid-western women who used to prepare huge mouth-watering meals that were devoured at the end of horse racing events when festivities were over the women would start flapping the checkered table cloth to indicate the soup was on the flag supposedly carried over to indicate the end of the race another theory rather interesting is g by carter hammett that the checkered flag first popped up or down after french bicycle races blackand-white checks were more visible in the din of a crowd particularly since races were conducted on dirt track which reduced visibility something high contrast surely helped the most consistent accounts however seem to indicate that a packard car employee named sidney waldon created the flag in 1906 to mark checking stations along rally-style events of the glidden tour today those points are referred to as check points there is no standard design for the checkered flag there is almost always a checkerboard pattern of alternating blackand-white squares but the size width length and design can vary widely for some events logos have also been incorporated into the design like sunoco s nascar has traditionally created a version of the flag with the name and date of the event a practice that has since spread to other events to use as promotional material in 1980 usac starter duane sweeney launched a new tradition at the indianapolis 500 by waving two checkered flags at why buy new when used will do 1-800-565-2433 n recycled replacement auto parts n rebuilders available n parts locating service 4 autoandtruckingatlantic.com njuly 2013 the race s conclusion previously starters had only used a single flag furthermore he also inaugurated the use of two green flags at the commencement of a race as well there s going to be lots of flags waving this summer as racing season revs up through the atlantic provinces and whether it s events like the parts for trucks maritime pro stock tour or the increasingly popular targa newfoundland there s something for everyone this season summarizing all that exists is quite the job but that s why veteran reporter terry waterfield s tackled the story and he does a fine job presenting a mass overview of all that s going on it s quite something to think about when you realize the sheer level of diversity contained within all the different events from the maritime sportsmen s challenge which offers three different events at three different locations to the slightly more humble targa which features cars similar to what you or i might drive to the store to pick up our groceries there really is something for everyone atlantic canadians are a fiercely loyal bunch as well and go far to support their own one young person who is definitely gaining notice is emily meehan who has been leaving many of her male counterparts behind in her dust with her young career taking off meehan stands poised to make a name of herself you can bet you ll be hearing a lot more from her in the near future brookside road truro ns apps are starting to slowly phone 902 897-0252 make their presence felt in racing cars as well our feafax 902 897-2854 ture on the rise of in-car apps introduces readers to a wide vancehanesautoparts.com range of service these babies daily shipping anywhere can perform don t neglect our useful features on prepping your tires for summer or getting a tour through air conditioner basics along the way either it s all right here and with that why not get straight to the action it s gonna be an awesome summer sit back seatbelts on and start your engines!

future technologies hands on the wheel eyes on the road the rise of in-car apps t by carter hammett hink apps are just for the smartphone smart guy think again the evolution of cars takes a giant leap someplace with the development of in-car apps from music to navigation and everywhere in between it s only the beginning one of my favourite places in the world so far is iceland anytime news comes up be it volcanoes geological change or bananas growing in greenhouses my ears perk up so i was rather interested to read about Íslendingaapp an android app for people in iceland specifically designed to prevent accidental incest you read that correctly when your country is small 320,000 people most of whom live in the reykjavik area chances are pretty high that you are distantly related to most of the people you pass in the street the app s most notable feature is called the sifjaspellsspillir or incest spoiler which is used to determine if two people interested in each other actually share grandparents this feature prompted news of iceland to laud it as a precious feature that will prevent awkward connections with someone that you would later run into at a family function sure i guess everyone has that problem but the story also made me start thinking about the prevalence of apps their role in the rapidly-evolving world of technology and their applications beyond cell phones tablets by themselves aren t very interesting pieces of technology until you accessorize them with some sexy apps need a restaurant in a jiff no problem there s an app for that how about a screen reading tool for someone with dyslexia want to teach a lesson in astronomy guess what there s an app for that too but beyond education and surface uses apps are starting to permeate oth er areas of society and one of the most profound impacts can be felt no further than your own vehicle from saving gas to avoiding traffic snarls to finding the best music or simply becoming more interactive with your vehicle we are going through an exciting transitional period right now where the role of apps is slowly defining itself and in the process changing our relationships with the vehicles we drive whether it s ford s sync system introduced in 2007 or onstar from gm a decade old already the gap between driver and vehicle interaction has narrowed considerably conversely the ways of relating to your vehicle is constantly broadening and will gradually evolve into a more customized experience for you the driver one ringy-dingy while the in-car market is galloping ahead in growth the most popular apps remain phone based but some application programming interface systems apis like ford s sync system are made so con 14 autoandtruckingatlantic.com njuly 2013
