hyperbaric oxygen how it works the earth s atmosphere normally exerts 14.7 pounds per square inch of pressure at sea level that is equivalent to one atmosphere absolute abbreviated as 1 ata in this atmosphere we breathe approximately 21 percent oxygen and 79 percent nitrogen during hbot the pressure is increased and the patient breathes 100 percent oxygen increased pressure combined with the increase in oxygen content dissolves oxygen into the blood and all other body tissues and fluid at many times the normal concentration physiologically this produces a directly proportional increase in the plasma volume fraction of transported oxygen which is readily available for cellular metabolism a number of beneficial biochemical cellular and physiologic effects result which account for the use of hyperbaric oxygen as an adjunctive therapy under normal circumstances oxygen is transported throughout the body only by red blood cells with hbot oxygen is dissolved into all of the body s fluids including plasma the central nervous system fluids and lymph then it can be carried to areas where circulation is diminished or blocked in this way extra oxygen can reach damaged tissues and the body can support its own healing process the increased oxygen greatly enhances the ability of white blood cells to kill bacteria reduces swelling and allows new blood vessels to grow more rapidly into the affected areas it is a simple non-invasive and painless treatment got more specific questions for dr larson write them here and bring them with you to your first consultation

therapeutic uses of hbot some of the therapeutic uses of hyperbaric oxygen are as follows 1 diving decompression illness 2 diabetic foot ulcers 3 traumatic brain injury auto accidents falls etc 4 carbon monoxide poisoning 5 autism many autism patients improve with treatment 6 illnesses or injury associated with diminished circulation and decreased tissue a infection of tissue having poor tissue oxygenation b post operative cases hbot can diminish inflammatory response speed healing c peripheral vascular disease while awaiting angioplasty or surgery 7 medical cases which has at times to help old strokes cerebral palsy 8 apparently hopeless and rare cases there are anecdotal case reports of unusual disorders such as mitochondrion disorders etc 9 muscle ligament tendon and joint injuries to accelerate healing in cases not needing surgery used by some professional athletes disclaimer some of the applications of hbot listed above have a consensus of possible benefit other applications are somewhat controversial worldwide the above listed uses have been reported by some to be of benefit at times in general when no other treatment has worked or is available hbot may be a worthwhile consideration neuro patients hbot can help with brain injury strokes autism cerebral palsy surgery patients hbot is recognized as a valuable tool for pre and postsurgical patients radiation patients hbot is used on cancer survivors to help revive affected tissue diabetic patients hbot is used on diabetics who are not recovering from wounds and ulcers pro athletes hbot is used by pro athletes and teams to speed the health of soft tissue injuries

radiation damages tissues from cancer radiation therapy improve with hyperbaric oxygen hbot can help restore tissues and cells damaged from chemotherapy and radiation treatments in cancer patients head neck and other cancer treatments that damage the jawbone may require hbot to restore the tissues side effects of cancer therapy may cause damage to the bladder and intestines and contribute to other poor conditions that may be improved with hbot breast cancer patients undergoing reconstruction may need hbot to allow radiation-damaged tissues to heal research has shown hbot is effective when used in addition to conventional treatment for the prevention and treatment of osteoradionecrosis a term for delayed bone damage caused by radiation therapy there is also some evidence suggesting hbot may be helpful as an additional treatment for soft tissue injury caused by radiation cancer.org plastic surgery and reconstruction surgery in a healthy person may heal up to 75 faster using hbot both before and after surgery patients frequently report less pain fewer scars reduced down time and fewer infections patients are able to return to work sooner with less bruising and/or swelling pre-surgery hyperbaric sessions are recommended then 5 to 10 treatments after plastic or cosmetic surgery of any time increased oxygen to traumatized skin is essential for adequate healing and oxygen applied under high pressure results in up to 20 times the normal blood oxygen concentration this helps the white cells fight off infection and encourages healthy healing key benefits of hbo therapy include · · · · · · reducing the effects of burns reducing excess blood loss treating decompression sickness increasing the wound healing process improving the texture of the skin around the incision site reducing the risk of infection by closing up wounds rapidly source emedicine.com burn victims improve with hyperbaric treatments hbot has been used for years to speed up healing in burn victims hbot is also beneficial for patients who have suffered smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning diabetic ulcers heal faster with hyperbaric oxygen diabetes is a disease that affects the small blood vessels in the tissues resulting in wounds or ulcers that may last months or even years these wounds often develop from incidental injuries to the body and may become infected these infections can and often do spread to deeper tissues and bones and may even eventually require amputation hbot can frequently help heal these wounds before surgery or amputation is necessary.
