newsletter volume 12 october 28 2010 sports academy class climbing up new climbing wall in gym dear students parents and caregivers term 4 sport is now well underway and all teams have had their first round of games our very only volleyball league kicked off last friday in our new gymnasium with 19 teams and 120 students involved it was great to see many families turn out to manage and support our students our new gymnasium is now 99 complete over the past 3 weeks the construction of the climbing wall has taken place the wall provides 8 challenging climbs for the students once staff have been trained to operate the climbing wall this will become a part of the students physical education programme the automatic belay devices allow 8 students to climb at a time the bouldering wall will be completed within the next two weeks the tauranga intermediate sports prizegiving will be held on wednesday 1 december at 6.30pm in the ivan aitken sports and cultural centre note this date in your diary and come along to celebrate the success of our sporting students in 2010 gareth scholes deputy principal sponsors of the tauranga intermediate school sports academy school cross country check out sport bop website www.sportbop.co.nz where youll find lots of information regarding upcoming events get active options inter-school results etc

nzct aims games hip hop gymsport in february 2010 the xpress dance crew was formed by ellie goff rm 20 and hollee barlow rm 20 they competed in the project hip hop dance competition in may and came third in the lead-up to the annual nzct aims games xpress wanted to compete alongside an all boys crew formed by te atirua ohia and a crew from matai there was a small dance-off between xpress and the all boys crew te atirau took it upon himself to be the manager of the aims team and he noticed strong dancers from both crews with these dancers he formed the aims crew otherside known as the cookie monster effect we had a few slip-ups on the way with dancers not wishing to compete injuiries etc by picking the best hip hop dancers in the school with a variety of styles and backgrounds tauranga intermediates aims team was the strongest it could be we practised at least two days a week for 6 weeks with the help of whaea luana who not only helped with supervising and choreography but with costumes and hair for the night we also had help from mischelle odonnel on the night who gave the performers amazing face paint unfortunately we didnt have a chance to check out most of the competition overall it was a great night and all the performers thought they performed to the best of their ability we also got a brilliant placing of 2nd with kawerau intermediate winning and te puke coming 3rd hollee barlow ellie goff rm 20 term 4 calendar pb/bop volleyball tis athletics pb/bop tennis golf fun day pb/bop beach challenge pb/bop athletics sport prizegiving pb/bop softball thursday 4 november tues 9 11 november thursday 11 november tuesday 16 november thurs/fri 18/19 nov friday 26 november wednesday 1 december friday 3 december qe11yc school whakatane omanu gisborne tauranga hall whakatane if you would like to receive a copy of this newsletter electronicaly via email please contact sabrina jackson at sabrinaj@tauranga-int.school.nz to be included on a mailing list.

milo shield girls cricket on monday 18 october the boys and girls cricket teams travelled to hamilton for a tournament our first game was against gisborne girls team we batted first and made a total of 94 runs we won by bowling them out we were stoked that we won and were ready for the next game our next game we fielded first after the first innings their total was 73 run s we had our target set and were confident unfortunately we lost by 4 runs a huge thanks to mr potaka for coaching us and teaching us how to play cricket we have had so much fun being involved with this tournament and were sad we couldnt go further katie mountain rm 1 milo cup boys cricket the tis milo cup team made their way to cambridge last monday to compete for the northern districts best cricket team crown tauranga played gisborne intermediate first up tis captain harris williams rm 1 won the toss and elected to bowl gisborne was dismissed for 37 with gurwinder singh rm 2 taking 2 wickets jared tutty rm 24 taking 3 ad jamie oakley rm 7 and sean wakelin rm 4 taking one a piece tis chased down the total with ease jamie oakley scoring 15 not out and chris wooller rm 3 scoring 10 the next game was against barclay intermediate tis won the toss and elected to bat harris williams and izzie turner rm 16 top scored with 17 and 32 not out respectitvely tis finished with a competitive total of 80 barclay sadly chased down the total with 2 overs to spare which means that the boys milo cup season has come to an end a special thanks to mr jeftha and brett hampton who helped our team get to where we got harris williams rm 1

spirit has fifty times the strength and staying power of brawn and muscle unknown my name is lyndy wickham and i am working with the youth development in triathlon tauranga if you have any kids there that are keen on doing triathlon we are happy to encourage anyone of any level it doesn t matter if they are beginners or what sort of bike they have we have a small friendly bunch of kids that would welcome anybody as long as the arrive with enthusiasm and a smile they should fit right in i am keen on teaching them new skills and to really get some fun out of the sport so if you have kids that are interested we would love to see them they can just turn up at the sessions and make themselves known to me please contact me at us4wickhams@xtra.co.nz triathlon tauranga winter sports uniforms these are well overdue and need to be returned to the sports office as soon possible your assistance in this matter would be appreciated a reminder that all sporting students should be keeping a record/log of their sporting achievements throughout the year placings in events captain s roles etc this information is required for our end of year sports prizegiving when we look at our overall sportsperson of the year awards

out of school achievements congratulations to taylor birks-stock rm 29 who competed in the rats kid duathlon in rotorua on tuesday and came 1st in year 7 girls well done congratulations to shania rawson rm 25 who captained the new zealand girls mighty 11 bmx racing team team that competed against the australians in rotorua last weekend shania pictured on the left competed against the world no 1 11 yr girls rider saya sakakibara from australia pictured right in the individual race shania finished a very close second to her but overall the new zealand girls team beat the australians to win the scholarship girls mighty 11 trophy we were really stoked to win this event richard levis rm 34 pictured right also competed in this event for the boys team richard placed 4th in the individual race but once again as a team the new zealand boys won the teams race beating the australians sports prizegiving wednesday 1 december on the page following is a nomination form for `contribution to sport if you know of someone who has coached a school team and is deserving of this award please complete the attached form please include all teams you know this person coaches and all successes you know of we want to know of their contribution to sport at tauranga intermediate these nomination forms will need to be handed into the sports office by wednesday 17th november all sporting opportunities are published in the daily notices it is vital that your students collect notices from the sports office if they are interested in participating.

pahoia school triathlon 2010 give it a try ­ swim bike run omokoroa domain sunday 7 november www.pahoia.school.nz/triathlon.htm pahoia school is holding its first ever triathlon on sunday 7th november 2010 at omokoroa domain this will be an annual event and is open to all primary schools within our local area race information the following age groups on race day will be run with separate races for both boys and girls 5-6 years 7-8 years 9-10 years 11-12 years swim/splash 25m swim 50m swim 75m swim 100m bike bike bike bike 400m 800m 1.5km 3km run run run run 200m 750m 1km 1.5km order of events check in race briefing first race prizegiving cost entries close 8:00 ­ 8:45am 8:45am 9:00am ­ in age group/gender sections approx 11:30am spot prizes and place-getter certificates $12 for first child $11 for second and $10 for every other child friday 5 november please return form and entry fee to your school office all participants will receive a race wrist band medal certificate and goody bag place-getter certificates awarded for 1st 2nd and 3rd bikes must be roadworthy koops cycles will be present to do bike checks bike helmets shirts and shoes must be worn during the cycle leg participants must obey the road code marshals and officials at all times first response medical unit will be present on the day heaps of spot prizes including a children s bike from koops cycles a variety of stalls including food and other fun activities for all to enjoy the event focuses on participation fun getting kids active and providing an individual challenge in a safe environment with the event being held on a sunday morning we hope the event will double as a `family fun day out pahoia school triathlon entry form 2010 name school name i understand that participating in this event is potentially hazardous i am also aware of all risks associated with participating in this event including but not limited to falls contact with other participants effect of weather traffic and conditions of the road i hereby release the event organisers sponsors volunteers and pahoia school board of trustees of all liability related to injuries or accidents which may occur as a result of participation in this event i give permission for the use and publishing of my child s image or recording for the purpose of event promotion boy girl age race day parent guardian s signature entry fee enclosed please return this form with your entry fee to your school office before friday 5 november
