springston school a 16-20 leeston road springston 7616 p 03-329-5724 f 03-329-5731 e office@springston.school.nz w www.springston.school.nz b springstonschoolnews.blogspot.com 24 may 2013 from the principal kia ora koutou i am sure you will all join with me in sending best wishes for a speedy recovery to corrina brown-thomas who ruptured her achilles tendon last week during an early morning fitness session corrina has had surgery to repair the tendon and will be off school for at least 6 weeks we welcome rochelle freeman who has stepped in to teach rooms 1 and 2 with helen four days a week melissa welch will continue with the class each wednesday diary this date please put a ring around wednesday july 3rd in your diary this is the date for our whole school performance this will take place at the lincoln events centre thanks to some generous funding from the red cross earthquake appeal this event will show case the learning from our growing up down under theme for the term think kiwiana plus iconic nz stories and music be warned there will be audience participation red cross the school has received just under $12,000 from the red cross christchurch schoolchildren s grant for which we are very grateful this money has been granted for kapahaka hiring the events centre plus transporting children to rehearsals supporting the year 8 wellington trip for the next 2 years plants for the secret garden along with some garden furniture as rate payers you may be interested to know that the school also a rate payer is required to pay every time we use the springston community hall for assemblies pmp pe kapahaka visiting perfomances etc part of the red cross grant will be used to pay for hall hire for the next two years sushi orders we had a great response to our first day of sushi orders last friday please note that we only take orders for what is on the order form you can imagine the logistics of organising a `made to measure service for a school of our size once we have tracked the orders for a while and worked out what is and isn t popular then we will investigate making changes and/or additions to the order form but for this term it remains as is bot elections by now you should have received your voting papers for the board of trustees elections make sure your vote is received by noon next thursday may 30th next week wendy helen and i along with liz mccormick bot will be attending a conference in auckland about modern learning environments matt thomas will be holding the fort for us here at school and will be available to assist you if you have any urgent issues ng mihi ki a koutou katoa liz weir principal lincoln rotary quiz win by alice t r7 on the 14th of may 2013 haidee and i went off to lincoln university to participate in the annual lincoln rotary quiz we had to put forward 12 general knowledge questions for the quiz when we arrived in the lecture theatre we had a set place to sit the same as the other 17 schools in the selwyn district that we were competing against we had four rounds each of ten questions at the end the results were announced and springston school was at the top by 1.5 points we were so surprised that we won we each go a $50 gift card a book and a certificate also we won $60 for the school library.

coming up may 27 30 31 zone cross cross country bot elections lincoln high open night assembly 9.15 sushi scholastic new zealand book council reviews competition congratulations to jessica p room 9 who won the 5-7 year old section of this competition here is jess s winning book review diary of a wimpy kid by jeff kinney i think this is a very good book it is about two boys greg and rowley they are best friends greg is mischievous sneaky and cheeky every day greg s dad makes him go outside to do sport but greg would just go to rowley s rowley is sensible kind and also silly he has funny ideas he is at an intermediate school but knows nothing more than a 7 year old rowley has a dad that won t let him play anything that is violent this book is about how they break up and make up how there is a piece of cheese on the court and nobody will go near it i feel happy about reviewing this book it is a very cool book year 5/6 rugby fun day june 3 7 14 21 26 28 july 3 12 queens birthday subway school fun run assembly 9.15 sushi subway bot meeting 7pm assembly 9.15 sushi school performance end of term 2 last friday was the rugby fun day two teams from springston school went to the ilam grounds to play rugby against teams from around christchurch the weather was cold and drizzly but luckily the rain didn t start until the end each team played three hard games of rugby and some people scored thrilling tries we also got to meet two of the crusaders adam whitelock and ben fenell even though we didn t win a game we still had a great time by ellie r5 canterbury duathlon our team of 9 took part in the canterbury duathlon at ruapuna racecourse last week along with 754 children from 63 other schools the team had been training hard for a number of weeks and our top performers were millie haidee lucy c and harriet congratulations to millie on her 6th place in the 11 year girls event school blogs news blog library website links to useful websites library blog books reading news fun springston on youtube pathfinders blog rm 8 explorers blog rms 1 2 navigators blog rm 3 rockets blog rm 4 team endeavour rm 6 e-team pioneers rm 5 team extreme rm 9 team inaka blog rm 7 principal s awards the following children sha red examples of their work with liz this week rm 1 zac rm 2 tuala rm 3 ella f lunch with liz these children had their names drawn out of the gotch a box at assembly last week and will have lunch with liz poppy rm2 zayden rm 5 sophie rm 5 our thanks to our friend s at subway rolleston for continuing to sponsor the se lunches.

pta news hi from the pta there have been a couple of changes in the pta team since this years agm the chairperson s role will now be shared by nathan welch and anne cochrane and we have a new secretary michael fitzsimons you may think the pta is all about the dreaded `fundraising but at springston we think it is more about building a strong working relationship between parents teachers and the school in support of the students yes we will have a strong fundraising focus this year with the playground developments but we would like to have just as strong a focus on communication within the school community our aim is to build great relationships from within and allow everyone to get involved in this exciting time of development of our school the new website is about to go live and the pta will have its own page to share information don t forget facebook is a great way to respond to and discuss items of interest and make suggestions nathan is planning a `night out for the boys this will be a good chance for the guys to get together and chat meet some of our school dads and don t worry no fundraising involved we will also have a similar `meet the mums event so watch this space for more details many thanks for supporting our recent fundraising efforts what with penny ashton the field days security and the lions directories as a school we have raised over $17,000 towards our new playground the scrap metal bin has also been well supported each time it is emptied we earn around $150 so an easy income and great to offer our extended community this recycling service we have organised for it to be emptied more often but if there are any men at school anytime and you see there are heavy items that need throwing in please lend a hand.
