mission statement of lions clubs international to create and foster a spirit of understanding among all people for humanitarian needs by providing voluntary services through community involvement and international cooperation lions clubs international district 4-a1 vol 53 issue 1 october 2010 district governor steve granlees happy new year dist 4-a1 first i would like to thank each lion member who attended the may district meeting especially the new club officers who attended their training sessions it is far more important than anyone realizes to attend these sessions we will have other training sessions later on as some of you know we have a very busy year ahead of us trying to strengthen our smaller weaker clubs starting new clubs such as the new delhi club as some of our lions are aware the average size per club is 40 members however some of these clubs have 20 members less if we could begin working toward bringing our average size per club to 60 these smaller clubs would notice what a difference it would make to do some of the projects they could not do before plus doing the present ones the merlo team is available to help at any time all the clubs need to do is call 1st vdg dave mccullough on page 48 in the dist directory or any of the other committee people they will give a program or help you canvass the streets in the 80 s we had 83 clubs now we have 61 clubs if we work toward having 75 good strong clubs we would have a much stronger district i would like to start several more clubs this year however it will take the help cooperation from all of us to do this our international president sid scrugg s theme is a beacon of hope he would like us to shine a light on service public relations membership youth leadership giving during the month of aug sep engaging our youth by inviting leos other youth to help organize participate in a service project in oct nov sharing the vision plan vision health projects work with the visually impaired such as world sight day in october in december january relieving the hunger by organizing food drives and projects to feed the hungry in april may protecting our planet by implementing projects that improve and protect the environment we recently had our first dist meeting on 8-13 &14 had about 100 lions on sat our installation of dist officers on fri night was done by pdg mel oneto from c-5 plus a nice dinner by san andreas lions mokelumne hill lions our meeting was very informative we had many raffle prizes at the end i have visited 21 clubs as of 8-19-10 am looking forward to visiting the rest of you soon inside this issue from dg 1 cabinet 2 white cane 3 9-11 3 peace poster contest 3 from 1 vdg 4 in memoriam 5 from 2 vdg 5 city of hope 5 new members 6 nov district meeting 7 medicalert 7 editorial thoughts 8 kases for kids 8 leos 8 camp pacifica 9 lions in sight 10 leadership institute 11 md4 convention 12 lwsb/roster correction13 dg visitations 14 pride news 15 calendar 16 ye 16 yours in lionism dg steve granlees we are on the web www.lions4-a1.org

page 8 october 2010 kases for kids by zc eileen vaccarezza august october are very important months for kases for kids this district project gives backpacks filled with pencils pens paper scissors rulers and small bags of toiletries to children without homes or in need backpacks can be purchased at great discounts this time of year at walgreens walmart 2nd hand stores and garage sales check newspaper ads for sales on filler items that children use for homework presently we have 45 backpacks to fill and distribute twenty of those are already spoken for by the tlc school we collect backpacks supplies and/or money on a yearly basis please do not get red or dark blue backpacks since those are gang colors if you have any questions please call lion eileen at 209887-3648 thanks for your help editorial thoughts my humblest apologies to those clubs who were expecting this newsletter to be out in a timely fashion to advertise your events unfortunately i was ill for awhile and did not realize that i was so tired and wasn t doing anything then i finally had to be admitted to the hospital hopefully i am past that and it won t happen again i must admit i feel much better other sunshine news lion frank cucco is finally out of hospital lion paul wright passed away last week has been out of the area for awhile living with his daughter in san diego pid nevadavince vinella s wife charlene passed away this last week those of you who have had the chance to meet pdg don wright 4c6at a district meeting he s back he has transferred to patterson lions and promises me he will be at the meeting at cp leos as the summer winds down kids return to school and we begin to focus on fall activities it s time to take a new look at the leo program in our district if your lions club has ever thought about sponsoring a leo club at your local high school or in your community now is the time to seriously do something about it adding the aspect of youth to your club s projects and activities will give them new life and vitality added extra willing hands can be a welcome assist for our aging memberships and the joy of helping young people realize their dreams and ambitions is rewarding beyond words there is nothing more inspiring than watching the enthusiasm of a group of young people who are giving of themselves to better their community learning that giving back is vital to their own success developing leadership skills through the guidance of lions who are willing to share their life s experiences and hopefully one day assume their own place as lions by lion jean weaver anything polar bears afraid of we are proud to be able to showcase the leo clubs in our own district madera leos with their shoes that fit program providing shoes to kids who can t afford a new pair of shoes to start school or providing backpacks filled with school supplies to kids in their community to be sure they have the tools to begin their school year or the leos from golden valley who help the parks and recreation department in merced staff their events throughout the community and help with fundraising for the center for vision enhancement in merced and the leos in modesto and stockton who are serving their communities with worthwhile projects continued page 9 leadership experience opportunity make it happen

page 10 october 2010 lions in sight from their newsletter we need all of your eyeglasses many of you know that a lot of donated eyeglasses are not reusable for overseas missions in fact only 30-40 of the glasses we collect can be recycled that way the rest have scratched lenses broken frames are sunglasses or are out of range out of range glasses are so named because they have a significant difference between the prescriptions in the two lenses or have a large amount of correction for astigmatism the standards for sorting glasses are set forth by lions clubs international and are the standards followed by lions eyeglass recycling centers throughout the united states eyeglasses that are not cleaned and sent out on missions are recycled in other ways we throw away very little sunglasses plastic frames and glasses in plastic frames that we cannot use are donated to the nonprofit organization feed the children we donated 110,000 pairs of glasses to this organization last year once the lenses are removed some of our reusable metal frames are recycled and distributed to needy patients at our clinic missions local optometrists then make custom lenses for the more difficult prescriptions some metal frames particularly those vintage models in high demand now are sent to an optical recycler for scrap or resale money raised from the recycling of frames we can t use helps to subsidize doctor s travel expenses and for operational expenses in addition to supplying our own clinic missions and permanent clinics with 775,000 pairs of donated glasses we routinely provide glasses to non-lion humanitarian groups both here and abroad during the 2009-2010 fiscal year 25,000 pairs of glasses were shipped from our warehouse for vision screenings conducted in bolivia chile ghana haiti honduras india mozambique serbia sudan and thailand we have two specially trained volunteers who sort through donated glasses once a week and take out some of the fancy sunglasses that are donated and sell them on e-bay if we get ray-ban s maui jim s or oakley s they are sold that way since we do not use sunglasses this has a little effect on our overall recycling program with recent updates to our glasses labeling and packaging policies our 2010 clinics have been stocked with a wider selection of better quality prescription glasses many team members have shared their excitement with us about these much needed improvements the big uglies have been removed from the clinic boxes we invite everyone to spend time working at our warehouse to see firsthand how our program operates if you have any questions regarding our warehouse procedures and/or operations please do not hesitate to contact us on behalf of the entire warehouse staff we would like to thank all of the lions lioness and leo club members who participate in the collection of used eyeglasses for our recycling program without your support lions in sight could not bring the gift of sight to people in need around the world yours in lionism lee gile walter griffin pdg lions in sight treasurer warehouse manager 707 864-1937 ralph.gile@comcast.net 510 507-0058 cad_e_man@hotmail.com

october 2010 page 11 lions leadership institute lions leadership institutes focus on building the skills of lions leaders to prepare them for leadership responsibilities at the club zone region and district levels there is a focus on applying many of the leadership skills long recognized in business and government to working with volunteers and the community qualified candidates are lions in good standing who have are active in their club or district leadership cost of the institute the cost to the attendee is $250 for the weekend the rest of the cost of the institute is picked up by lions clubs international and multiple district four this covers the meals materials and a shared room at the hotel applications lions who meet the qualifications may apply if you are interested in attending applications are available from your district governor or you may download an application from the md-4 web site requirements all attendees agree to do the pre assignments and to attend all of the classes 2011 md-4 leadership institute application january 15th to 17th 2011 harris ranch located off interstate 5 coalinga california cost $250 double occupancy an extra $55 per night as a single please register early as there is a pre-assignment to be completed this is a great program for incoming presidents and district officers we would encourage clubs to help pay for the program if this might be a reason for someone not attending areas of emphasis some of the areas covered in the course work are change leadership presentation skills diversity conflict resolution supporting teams project management lcif communications and technology lions dress the dress is casual please wear comfortable clothes to the classes business attire is appropriate for the graduation dinner on sunday evening starting time we start training at 10 a.m on saturday morning some students may want to come in on friday evening you can do that at your own expense we have a group rate of $110 per night that you may use meals start with the saturday continental breakfast at 9 a.m all sessions start on time training ends monday at noon lions leadership institute application when completed send to please print chris morris name 2198 casa mia drive address san jose ca 95124 city zip code 408-371-6866 phone or email to cdmsr@pacbell email address lions club district date highest office held check
