concordia scores a perfect 10 it was hard to ignore the buzz of excitement on campus at concordia international school shanghai on monday september 1 2008 as students parents and faculty came together for the first time after an extended olympic summer break to kick-start the 2008-09 school year as with any new school year the reunion came with a flurry of chatter giggles high-fives and hugs with the hubbub heightened by the excitement of concordia s 10-year anniversary celebrations with monthly events planned throughout the coming school year the concordia community has much to look forward to students and faculty were delighted to receive commemorative baseball caps and tote bags bearing the new 10-year logo as well as a surprise treat from hershey s chocolate company ­ hershey s signature kisses and everyone is eagerly anticipating the year s main celebratory event scheduled for the evening of saturday april 25 2009 which promises to be an elegant gala celebration even sooner on saturday october 11 2008 concordia will be proud to host american christian song artist and performer don wharton concordia was founded in 1998 with only 22 students 14 teachers and 10 administrative staff in what was then a new section in shanghai ­ the residential jinqiao neighborhood of pudong today the school has more than 1,000 students representing nearly 30 different passports taught by more than 130 teachers in four purpose-built facilities this academic year concordia will celebrate an eighth graduating class with graduates continuing to enroll in the world s finest universities a concordia education is more than a preparation for university said david harris concordia s high school principal since 2003 it is an education for the whole of life concordia s sister school hong kong international school hkis was started in the 1960 s by a group of business associates who worshiped together foresaw the growth of hong kong as a business center for asia and recognized the need for a christian school of high standard similar thinking was behind the initiative to begin concordia board of directors operates the school on behalf of the lutheran church missouri synod lcms which provided the initial funding to start concordia concordia s families are culturally diverse and highly mobile the expatriate student body is drawn from families in both business and professional communities with instruction in english the school selectively admits students from around the world the majority coming from the u s and other international schools since 1998 concordia has witnessed phenomenal growth ­ not only within the student and faculty bodies but also through the expansion of facilities program offerings and student educational opportunities no longer a one-building campus concordia s 10-acre campus now boasts four new purpose-built facilities two of which the david f rittmann fine arts center and a elementary school opened at the start of the 2007-08 school year these facilities followed prior developments including a middle school building 2004 and a multi-purpose facility 2003 construction of a new high school facility began in june 2008 with completion slated for the start of the 2009-2010 school year this phase iv development will feature state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories as well as the campuses fourth gymnasium concordia s growth is fueled through the evident quality of the education program offered as well as the numerous extracurricular opportunities that provide a healthy balance in the lives of concordia s students part of this balance comes in maintaining concordia s emphasis on christian values and community with each school year concordia becomes the school of choice for an increasing number of students and families moving to shanghai concordia welcomed head of school dr james koerschen at the start of the 2007-08 school year following an announcement by concordia s board of directors through the lcms s call process he serves as concordia s fourth head of school dr koerschen a veteran educational administrator was a natural choice for the school concordia is excited to celebrate the achievements of the past 10 years this school year dr koerschen said and to recognize how god has truly blessed this very special community as a co-educational day school concordia serves those in the international community who desire an american college by michelle de rozario director of marketing preparatory education in a christian context a self-perpetuating concordia international school shanghai -10-

yogyakarta international school is on the threshold of a whole new existence we have a new campus yis was opened in 1986 as a non-profit independent non-residential non-sectarian elementary school in a yogyakarta suburb instruction is in english based on a hybrid australian/american curriculum and we currently include grades k-8 for about 60 kids with eight teachers four of whom are expatriates yis had 19 years operation at the old site three converted houses and a couple of empty lots as a car park and a sports field now we have nearly everything we need and we start the 2008/09 school year at a purpose-built and renovated new site the yis board has worked hard at this the site used to be an agricultural college undergoing lean times we ve leased half their grounds and a new school has emerged from their dilapidated buildings the new site has several big advantages great classrooms they used to house 100 adult learners in rows of desks so our classes of fifteen kids have room to swing several cats we also now have a science lab purpose-built music and art centers and a computer room/library so we re ready to join the big boys excitement is high we re not a mom and pop school any longer with a good reputation room to grow and an excellent new location we expect we ll be attracting more students time will tell security in these security conscious times the board has been able to start afresh with a security system that is well thought out and easily implemented cars and motorbikes do not have access to the grounds at all and pedestrian access will be closely monitored strangers will never be on site as a single guarded gate requires all visitors to identify themselves classrooms and play areas are both away from the roadside walls parents should feel secure leaving their children with us trees this was an agricultural college the garden abounds with mature and fruiting mango cocoa star fruit and other trees carefully protected during the renovation fresh picked mangoes for recess location five minutes to the centre of town but yet nearly on the edge little traffic passes our road it s quiet peaceful and almost rural as i write a workforce of 90 men swarm over the site like ants in two weeks the students will be arriving for the first time there ll be hurdles but it s all up from here derek pugh principal yis 12th august 2008 in july 2008 the new yis site had a workforce of 90 men working feverishly to ready it for the new school year earcos future conference calendar eac 2008 administrators conference november 1 through 4 kota kinabalu etc 2009 teachers conference march 25 through 28 kota kinabalu gin2009 global issues network conference march 20-22 international school bangkok spring heads meeting 2009 april 25-26 myanmar -12-
