enmu nursing advice for online learners from enmu s dr rolando marquez put into the process because online courses can be isolating it is vital that you become part of the online community by participating in the discussion boards providing feedback and forming a sense of community with your peers so you can support each other throughout the semester with the proliferation of online education there are obvious advantages to taking online classes particularly for the working professional but with great power comes great responsibility what are some of the main things that students should keep in mind when taking an online course here are the top five factors for successful online learning time management an online course is much harder than a face-to-face f2f course because it demands that the student have a high level of discipline and self-regulation look at the calendar and set out a time every week to work on the course most online courses require about two to three times as much time as a comparable f2f course when it comes to work setting that routine will help you remain consistent and disciplined and it will pay off in the end participation in the online community what you personally get out of a class also depends on what you page 6 · spring 2013 everyone brings something different to the table there is great value in learning from each other listening to differing points of view and examining your own beliefs that is what education is all about flexibility and a positive attitude an online program is not about getting to the finish line first but about getting to the finish line successfully pace yourself and be open to change you may encounter computer problems and other technology issues the key is to take a deep breath remain calm and try again above all enjoy the online learning process and have fun this is your education and your future your education is what you set your mind for it to be so make the best of it and learn as much as you can dr rolando roy marquez came to enmu in august 2011 after earning a ph.d from the university of central florida dr marquez worked as a technology specialist for the college of education and the center for research education arts and technology at the same institution he is enmu s curriculum development specialist and the institutional representative for quality matters a national benchmark for online course design contact dr marquez rolando.marquez@enmu.edu or at 575.562.2539 www.enmu.edu communication make sure that you stay in touch and communicate frequently with the faculty and students in your course particularly if you have questions or are struggling in class remember faculty cannot see your body language or hear your voice if you re having problems you need to tell them otherwise they won t know and they can t help you if you re working in groups keep your fellow students informed if you are having issues related to illness emergencies etc collaboration this is one of the hardest things to do and a factor that students often complain about but it is one of the most valuable forms of learning.

enmu nursing prison nurse continues her education at enmu while on the job to continue self-care without the guidance of nurses like stephanie his disease would probably have escalated outside of management levels and severely affected his health one of the primary goals of cchp certified nurses is to teach prisoners to be healthier on the outside while they are in prison so that they can improve their own quality of life stephanie said that the pay scale for nurses working within prisontype environments is better than that of local hospitals additionally personal safety issues are often improved over those of emergency room and other trauma care nurses due to the fact that all prison patients are accompanied by guards and that the general demeanor of the prisoners is known another benefit of working in this environment includes an opportunity to make an impact on patients who previously had no formal healthcare the community is protected from them while they are incarcerated and they receive care that assists them in becoming more productive members of society once they are back at home stephanie continued one thing about prison nursing that i absolutely love is that every day presents a different opportunity from cancer care to the common cold stagnation and boring day-to-day tasks are non-existent and nurses can develop their skills across a broad spectrum of healthcare applications stephanie was born in texas but spent most of her childhood in hobbs she began her nursing career in the lea county correctional facility as a prn an `as needed licensed practical nurse at the behest of a nursing instructor when she was earning an rn degree at new mexico junior college nmjc in hobbs this job provided tuition reimbursement for nursing school and allowed her to both continue her nursing education and provide for her family financial support from lea county correctional facility/corizon the private company that contracts for this prison has continued as stephanie works toward a bsn stephanie s promotions have included full-time lpn full-time rn once she achieved that degree from nmjc charge nurse and her current position of don while in school and caring for four children and her husband an oilfield safety supervisor from nurse to student to supervisor to wife and mother stephanie is passionate about integrating all these roles into a productive and happy life and says that enmu has been a big part of her success stephanie says there is no way she could have continued her nursing education without the fluidity and continued on page 9 stephanie calvillo formerly patrick an enmu bsn completion program student and the director of nursing don at lea county correctional facility in hobbs nm says that being a prison nurse is not scary like on tv she says that it is an exciting and unique specialty certification within the field of nursing healthcare professionals within correctional facilities are cchps certified correctional healthcare personnel some people feel prison nurses aren t `real nurses and this certification proves that is not the case stephanie continued nursing care within prison systems is not about sitting around waiting for people to die but rather about providing care many prisoners would not have received prior to their incarceration for example stephanie told of a diabetic prisoner who received training to manage his disease while in prison who was given supplies once he was released page 8 · spring 2013 www.enmu.edu
