educational tradition of st john bosco it is approved by the department of education and the board of regents of the state of new york and accredited by the middle states association of colleges and schools salesian high school serves approximately 500 young men from westchester county and the borough of the bronx in new york city committed to fostering an environment that nurtures the whole freshmen was selected to inaugurate the prestigious math leaders program this full scholarship program provides emphasis on advanced math and science courses along with an introduction to the engineering sciences under the direction of a dedicated guidance counselor students are exposed to a number of college tours entrance into national competitions and other supplementary academic provides participants with the opportunity to attend off-campus lectures visit research sites and attend regularly scheduled research classes and labs through contact with actual field conditions this program provides a unique opportunity for students to stand apart from their peers and gain experiences now considered favorable when applying for admission to competitive colleges marching band music under the direction of the paul effman organization music is in full swing at salesian high school in addition to weekly small group lessons the full band meets twice a week to rehearse for various school functions and parades students can choose from a wide range of instruments and may participate in the program regardless of their level of experience through 9 students that participate in this program funded by the gilder lehrman institute of american history have the opportunity to examine selected topics in american history studies in addition to analyzing primary sources videos slides and music students participate in group discussions and use the school s computers best of all ­ no homework and no tests upon satisfactory completion of the course the academy will send a certificate of achievement to the student s school volunteering as a big brother to incoming freshmen working in hospitals nursing homes or with the less fortunate as well as working in poor parishes in the ny area florida alabama and louisiana honors program students who are invited to participate in this intensive interdisciplinary program are challenged to achieve personal and academic success by taking honors level and advanced placement courses honors scholars are provided opportunities to take advantage of the cultural enrichment that new york city has to offer museums opera theater etc as well as the opportunity to enroll in college link and special elective courses in their senior year while this invitation only program officially begins in the sophomore year salesian offers select freshmen the pre-honors plus program where they can become acquainted with the demands and benefits of becoming an honors scholar at salesian high automated library from their workstations in the recently completed library/media center the benefits of technology are only a click away students can search for books using the automated card catalogue available on every computer since the salesian high library also extends to cyberspace students have access to a large collection of online databases and e-books through the library s web page these resources are available to students twenty-four hours a day both on campus and at home guidance housed in the newly renovated guidance suite four counselors experienced in dealing with the complex issues our students present are on staff to discuss personal concerns on an individual and group basis and to examine future educational and career opportunities with their skills constantly updated via workshops and additional professional courses the counseling staff is prepared to address the needs of all our students including those with special needs who may require additional support and appropriate accommodations financial planning for college sources of financial aid and online college selection resources are available in the counseling suite evening work-shops on a variety of important topics are offered to parents throughout the year interscholastic sports and intramural sports salesian s commitment to excellence continues in the student s athletic pursuits a power in the catholic high school athletic association salesian won seven city championships in 2010 this follows within the framework of promoting a sound mind in a sound body salesian high school participates interscholastically in soccer bowling cross country basketball wrestling baseball volleyball golf tennis and indoor and outdoor track some of these sports also have junior varsity and freshman teams in addition all the students have an opportunity to participate in a well-rounded intramural program activities include football soccer basketball softball and ultimate frisbee the physical eduction department promotes good health and safety practices gilder lehrman institute of american history academy program salesian high school is the fourth school in the country and the first outside of new york city selected by the gilder lehrman foundation to be an american history academy the foundation helps the school integrate american studies into the school curriculum through this grant salesian high school has created an academically rigorous learning environment that offers courses in american history throughout the four-year high school curriculum the foundation oversees salesian s academy of american history and provides support and educational materials teachers are invited to participate in seminars enrichment programs and fellowships taught by renowned historians at ivy league colleges drama the extraordinary talents of our students have an opportunity to shine when the salesian high school players present their annual spring production from the opening strands of the overture performed by professional orchestras peppered with our very own student musicians to the incomparable casts and crew audience members have learned to expect an evening of quality entertainment advanced placement ap the advanced placement program provides students with the opportunity to take college level courses and earn college credit the courses offered include -a.p calculus -a.p world history -a.p american history -a.p english language and composition -a.p english literature and composition activities/clubs special events since an integral part of education takes place outside the classroom salesian offers a wide variety of activities that meet the individual needs and interests of all students aimed to help a young man develop into a person with respect for himself and for others in addition to athletics students are selected students can earn college credits through courses that are offered in salesian s college bridge program and our on-campus college link program saturday history program an extension of the american history academy program the saturday academy is a six-week coeducational tuition free enrichment program held twice a year on saturday mornings at salesian high school it is open to all catholic private and public school students in grades 7 youth ministry this comprehensive program offers students an opportunity to live the faith while learning the values of leadership and service all students complete 50 community service hours prior to graduation projects include serving the school community teaching ccd in local grammar schools,

academicyear2010-2011 page4 transportation private private bus service to and from salesian is available for both bronx and westchester students further information and applications are available at the school public students who reside in the bronx are eligible to receive a free city bus pass or subway pass each semester that entitles them to ride the bronx bus or subway free of charge this bus pass cannot be used on a westchester bus also students who reside in the bronx or westchester may purchase a discounted monthly bus ticket for the bee-line buses through the school this will entitle the student to ride on any day of the week or at any time of the day on all westchester buses in the county of westchester for further information please contact bee-line bus system at 914 682-2020 students who reside in the bronx or westchester may purchase a monthly ticket for the metro north train at the reduced student fare commutation ticket applications may be obtained at any metro north train station or at the school various public school districts provide transportation to salesian high school students who register in their district this service is arranged for through the local board of education where the student resides the majority of these arrangements must be made by april 1 please contact your individual school district for further information districts that presently provide bus service for salesian students who reside in their districts are as follows ardsley blind brook bronxville dobbs ferry eastchester elmsford greenburg central 7 harrison hastings-on-hudson irvington mamaroneck mount pleasant pelham port chester rye rye neck scarsdale tarrytown tuckahoe and valhalla please note new rochelle mt vernon white plains and yonkers board of education do not provide this kind of bus service for driving directions log on to www.salesianhigh.org tuition and fees 2010-2011 annual tuition the tuition is $6,225 for 2010-2011 a nonrefundable tuition deposit of $750 is due according to the following schedule for incoming 9th grade students $150 is due with the completed acceptance form upon notification of admittance $750 is due on registration day in march for 10th 11th 12th grade students due in full on or before june 5 2010 senior graduation fee $150 this fee applies to 12th year students only and is due on june 5 along with the deposit the following fees are payable at student orientation day in september general fee $460 per student 350 for siblings capital enhancement fee $200 per family sibling discounts are available for families with more than one son attending salesian high school enrollment ·100%oftheapplicantsacceptedintocollege and universities ·60%ofthegraduatesreceivedscholarships and grants ·theclassof2010receivedover$6.1millionin college scholarships and grants schedule of tuition payments tuition plan a one payment tuition is as follows one tuition payment of $5,475 by july 5 2010 tuition plan b two payments tuition is as follows $2737.50 by july 5 2010 $2737.50 by january 5 2011 there is an annual fee of $38.00 payable to c&e lockbox scholarships financial aid academic scholarships covering part of tuition are granted to incoming students according to their scores on the tachs entrance examination and/or salesian high school s own scholarship/entrance examination these scholarships are renewable every year provided good academic standing is maintained a limited amount of financial aid based on need is available financial aid applications must be submitted annually and are available at registration the deadline is may 1 tuition plan c monthly payments all payments will be made on the 5th of the month payment will be $498 per month for 11 months from july 2010 through may 2011 there is an annual fee of $38.00 payable to c&e lockbox c&e lockbox is an automated tuition collection program.
