study programmes the university which is student-oriented and has a strong focus on research has nine faculties and enrols over 18,000 students in more than 100 study programmes the university is constantly strengthening the international character of its programmes the different backgrounds of those who study and teach at the university help reinforce our common objective to achieve the highest possible quality in education and research bachelor s programmes radboud university nijmegen offers forty bachelor s degree programmes all bachelor s programmes connect to at least one master s degree programme at the university dutch is the language of instruction in all bachelor s programmes master s programmes we offer a full range of master s programmes which are taught in english in addition to regular one-year programmes the university offers two-year research master s programmes all master s programmes at the university have been internationally accredited by the accreditation organization of the netherlands and flanders nvao for more details of these programmes admission procedures tuition fees and registration www.internationalmasters.eu phd candidates after obtaining a master s degree you might want to continue your studies as a phd candidate at radboud university our research and education benefits from an international approach and phd candidates play an important role in this process the process of earning a doctorate normally takes four years or more and consists of conducting independent research and writing a dissertation in general a tuition fee is not requested www.ru.nl/phd international alumni the number of students who come from abroad to study in nijmegen is increasing every year when they leave these students automatically become a part of our growing international alumni network playing an important role as ambassadors for the university around the globe they receive an e-newsletter have access to the university s online interactive community alumniweb and can participate in an alumni facebook community for more information please contact our international office www.ru.nl/io/english/international_alumni 3

facilities the university has a wide range of facilities which international students and staff are welcome to make use of all of the facilities described are on campus the university library the university library has an extensive collection of titles and periodicals and a large collection of rare manuscripts a large number of mainly bibliographical and full-text databases can be accessed via the library s website www.ru.nl/library books and periodicals that are not available in the university libraries can be ordered through the interlibrary loan network there is a large central library plus six faculty libraries which are open to any registered library card holder cards can be obtained from the lending desk in the central library the computer catalogue of books and periodicals can be accessed in the libraries themselves or online through the library website with a few exceptions library services are free of charge www.ru.nl/library research facilities research at radboud university covers a wide range of disciplines from life sciences to law and language and literature the university s high-quality research institutes which are in the forefront of a number of fields offer unique opportunities to undergraduates postgraduates and phd students one of the university s strengths is its emphasis on interdisciplinary study and research for example biomedical experts medical scientists biologists physicists and bio-informaticians work 4

closely together in the nijmegen centre of molecular life sciences research in the cognitive and neurosciences is conducted at the centre for cognition the centre for language studies the donders institute for brain cognition and behaviour and at the world-famous max planck institute for psycholinguistics www.ru.nl/english/research orientation and social activities the university s international office organises an orientation programme twice a year as well as other regular activities for international students orientation days are intended to help students become acquainted with the city the university and its community these include a `dutch day a day full of activities designed to welcome international students and staff what s more the international office provides international students with useful tips about dutch student life the international office also organises a number of excursions to cities and sights in other parts of the netherlands www.ru.nl/io/english/orientation sports centre the university has a state-of-the-art sports centre on campus students `work out individually and in groups there are classes and workouts for virtually any sport you can think of and of course you can join one of the many students sports clubs and maybe play in tournaments and league competitions new programmes start several times a year you can choose among other things between tennis squash general fitness training volleyball as well as ice skating and korfball ­ a game a bit like mixed netball www.ru.nl/usc university restaurant the university restaurant `de refter serves inexpensive hot meals mondays to fridays from 12:00 13:30 and from 17:00 19:00 for lunches and snacks the restaurant is open mondays to fridays from 8:30 17:00 university chaplaincy this is a centre where students and staff can meet meditate and take part in discussions or join in worship there are several activities in english group meetings and discussions regular catholic eucharist anglican church services and ecumenical prayer meetings a chapel muslim prayer room and a quiet room are available for private prayer or meditation www.ru.nl/chaplaincy 5

application and admission student services and finding accommodation the university s international office provides a special service package including help with visas housing and social activities for international students who enrol in an international master s programme our university strives for the highest quality also with our services this has even been acknowledged by the european commission who recently stated that radboud university has `an impressive range of activities for outgoing and incoming students and a high sense of concern for the quality in order to make it easier for students to apply for these services the university has developed a digital application system as part of the service package all international master s students who come to nijmegen for a master s degree programme taught in english will be guaranteed housing provided they apply before the deadline and the international office has received a letter of acceptance from the student affairs office most student rooms are located within a few kilometres of the university and can easily be reached by bus or bicycle rooms are furnished but in most cases you must provide your own bed linen pillow blankets and towels a furnished room with shared kitchen toilet and shower facilities will cost you up to 450 euros per month for more information please contact the international office t +31 024 361 20 61 e housing@io.ru.nl www.ru.nl/masters/housing one important requirement is english language proficiency because the language of instruction is english and the level of the master s programmes is high we require at least a minimum score on one of the following tests toefl ielts cambridge exam 550 6.0 advanced or proficiency at least a c grade internet-based test ibt 80 computer-based test cbt 213 application procedure the university has a generic application process for all master s programmes however for research master s programmes the application procedure may differ slightly from the one described below please refer to the webpages of the programme you would like to follow for precise details the easiest way to apply is via www.ru.nl/applicationmaster you will be asked to send various documents to the university once we have received these we will inform you as soon as possible about our decision www.ru.nl/applicationmaster if you have any further question about your application please contact student information desk t +31 024 3612345 e sid@dsz.ru.nl admission for all the programmes students will be assessed before admittance in some cases this may involve an interview or an assignment in general you are expected to have a background that is similar to a bachelor s degree in the same field as your selected master s programme once you have sent your application the examination board will determine whether the curriculum you have followed meets the requirements of your proposed master s programme if the examination board decides that your academic background is adequate for the master s programme you will be admitted to the programme assuming all other conditions have also been fulfilled 7

financial matters the cost of living in the netherlands the netherlands is a relatively expensive country to study in although the tuition fees are reasonable as everyone s spending habits are different it is not easy to predict exactly how much money you will need for your stay in the netherlands but please make sure you have sufficient money to maintain your lifestyle there are a number of scholarships but generally speaking international students are not awarded grants for living costs by the dutch government each year non-eea students must be able to prove to the immigration and naturalisation services that they have sufficient financial means if you would like any further information about the cost of living in the netherlands or any other practical information about living and studying in the netherlands please visit www.nuffic.nl/international-students scholarships radboud scholarship programme the university awards a number of scholarships to non-eea students the radboud scholarship programme rsp for example covers part of the tuition fee which is charged at the eu rate and the cost of a visa the university will also pay for your insurance during your study you should apply for the rsp before 1 march and please bear in mind that you must have a place in a programme before applying www.ru.nl/rsp huygens scholarship programme the huygens scholarship programme hsp awards a number of full scholarships each year to excellent eea and non-eea students students must apply with a letter of recommendation from the programme they wish to receive the scholarship for the deadline for application is 31 january in the year in which the programme starts www.nuffic.nl/hsp some students can apply for grants from their home country or from other institutions that have funds available for students to study abroad to make your search easier you can use the `grantfinder site www.grantfinder.nl www.ru.nl/scholarships tuition fees for up-to-date information on tuition fees please go to the webpages of the programme you intend to follow or www.ru.nl/masters/tuition loans students can take out a loan from the ib-groep the dutch government institution that deals with financial issues for students in the netherlands due to legal constraints it is currently only possible for eea students to take out a loan for the annual tuition fee for more information and an application form please go to www.ib-groep.nl and click on international visitors 8
